Moss graffiti, also called eco-graffiti or green graffiti, is a great substitute for designs made with spray paint and other types of toxic substances that damage the environment. All you need is a brush and a moss-based "paint" that will grow on its own. In recent years people have begun to develop an environmental and ecological conscience, so the idea of a living brand like that of moss graffiti has spread more and more among street artists. It can be considered to all intents and purposes a guerrilla gardening tool.
Ingrediants
- One or two clods of Moss (a handful)
-
2 cups of Buttermilk
You can replace it with Yogurt (even vegan)
- 2 cups of water
- 1/2 tablespoon of sugar
- Corn syrup (optional)
Steps
Step 1. Collect as much moss as you can find (or buy)
Step 2. Rinse the moss to remove roots and soil
Step 3.
Break up the moss by dividing it into pieces, then put it in the blender
Step 4.
Add the buttermilk or yogurt, water or beer, and finally the sugar
Blend the mixture until it has a creamy and fluid consistency, like that of a paint.-
If the mixture feels too liquid, add corn syrup until you get the desired consistency
Step 5. Use a brush to apply the moss-based paint to the designated eco-graffiti surface
Step 6. If possible, check for graffiti growth at least once a week by spraying the design with water or applying more moss paint
This will encourage moss to grow, especially if you have chosen a fairly dry environment.
Advice
- Moss grows best on porous surfaces, such as brick or other types of stone.
- Apply the paint to a damp area that is exposed to partial shade.
- The best time to plant graffiti is spring or fall, keeping the moss moist to encourage growth.
- If for some reason you need to remove the graffiti or part of the design, sprinkle it with lemon juice which will kill the moss.
-
Moss can also be used as a decorative element inside a home.
Warnings
- If you wish to do this because it is a green initiative, do not collect moss from public areas. You can buy it in a nursery or order it online. It's not exactly a move against the system, but it's the right thing to do.
- Graffiti art, unless done with a permit from the municipality, is generally not legal. This article does not advocate illegality, however graffiti can be done inside or outside your home without permission.
