Vitiligo is a chronic and non-curable skin disorder characterized by the reduction of natural skin pigmentation, resulting in the formation of patches. Therefore, there is a loss of physiological skin color, which leads to the manifestation of light or white spots. It can affect any part of the body, including hair. Often the patches begin to form on areas of the skin that are exposed to the sun and are more evident on subjects with dark complexions. While not dangerous, this disease can lead to a strong feeling of discomfort and embarrassment. It is possible to treat color loss with specialized make-up products. You can also use cosmetics designed to treat depigmentation in the eyebrow area. Finally, you could consider the option of undergoing a surgical operation in case the makeup does not give you the desired result.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Try Cosmetics Designed for Vitiligo
Step 1. Choose super opaque or camouflage-effect cosmetics
The classic make-up brands found in make-up shops are not suitable for those who want to cover the patches caused by vitiligo. It is necessary to buy specialized and specially designed tricks to cover the discoloration due to this disorder. Specifically, these cosmetics are defined with a camouflage effect or super opaque. The camouflage technique is generally used by both men and women and the effect it creates is not that typical of make-up. In fact, since its purpose is simply to even out the patches of skin, it will appear that you are not wearing anything.
- Camouflage products usually go to order on the internet, but you may also be able to find them in pharmacies or well-stocked makeup stores. It is not necessary to have a recipe to buy them. You should select a color that matches your natural complexion. It is possible that you need to buy and try various cosmetics; not everyone immediately finds the most suitable tone for their skin.
- Camouflage products are safe for both adults and children. It is possible to wear them all day without problems, as they have a very good seal.
Step 2. Cleanse your skin
Having bought the products you need, you should cleanse the areas on which you intend to apply the camouflage cosmetics. All you have to do is wash your skin thoroughly using an antibacterial cleanser. Pat it dry with a clean towel at the end of the wash.
Keep in mind that you should read the instructions on the product packaging before starting. Although most products suggest that you cleanse your skin before starting, some may come with special usage instructions. Always read them before using a new camouflage product
Step 3. Moisturize your skin if you need it
Once the skin has been washed, it may need to be moisturized. Since you will need to apply several layers of cosmetics to cover it, it is helpful to use a moisturizer if you have naturally dry or sensitive skin. However, some products advise against this step, so read the label first.
- For most people, applying a light, water-based moisturizer is enough. Greasy or oily products may irritate the skin. However, if yours is dry, oily or sensitive, you will need a specific moisturizer.
- Do you have dry skin? Opting for an oil-based moisturizer will help rehydrate it. If you have particularly dry or cracked skin, look for a petroleum jelly-based product. For sensitive skin, choose a moisturizer that contains soothing ingredients, such as chamomile or aloe vera.
- Since oily skin is more prone to acne, look for a non-comedogenic cream if you have this type of skin. Non-comedogenic creams are specially designed to prevent clogging of pores.
Step 4. Apply foundation by making several light strokes
In general, camouflage products should be applied by creating various light layers. Your goal should be to get the most natural result possible to cover the discoloration.
- With each swipe, start at the center of the patch and work your way out. You can apply it with your fingers, but wash your hands first. In any case, if desired, you can also use make-up brushes or sponges.
- The application of the foundation should always be extended by exceeding the white patch by a few millimeters. Let the first pass dry for about five minutes before doing the second. Layer it according to your needs for satisfactory coverage.
- If in doubt, you can usually find phone numbers or other ways to contact the company on product packaging. Many brands offer online video tutorials that you can watch to understand how to apply the product correctly.
Step 5. Blend your makeup as needed
As the application starts from the middle part of the patch, the makeup will gradually fade outwards. Blend the make-up into the surrounding skin as it fades, so that it blends naturally with your complexion. If you intend to apply other cosmetics, do so after applying the foundation. Make up as usual by applying the products on top of the camouflage ones.
The blending operation will be more effective if you have chosen a cosmetic brand with colors that perfectly suit your complexion. Remember that it may take a few tries before you find a camouflage makeup brand that fits your needs. Be prepared to do several experiments on this journey
Step 6. Apply the powder
You should find a fine powder in the foundation box, which you will need once you finish applying the initial layers of makeup. Generally it should be dusted on the skin, just like a normal powder foundation, to obtain a smooth and natural effect. Add the powder after you finish layering the camouflage cosmetics. You can apply it with a make-up brush.
Method 2 of 3: Use Specialized Cosmetics to Correct Depigmented Eyebrows
Step 1. Comb your eyebrows and shave them as needed
Vitiligo can also cause eyebrow depigmentation. If this is your case, you can use cosmetics to shape and thicken them. Start by combing them and, if you have a habit of doing it, shave them to get the desired shape.
- Eyebrow combs can be found in cosmetic stores and can be used to gently comb this area. You can also wash a fine-toothed comb and use it for the same purpose.
- You can then use tweezers to pluck your brows until you get the shape and thickness you prefer. Not everyone has a habit of shaving them. If so, skip this step. If your brows have been affected by a depigmentation process, only remove hair from areas you can see clearly.
Step 2. Draw the outline of the eyebrows
Now, trace the outline of the lower part of the eyebrow with a light eyeshadow. Choose one of the same color as the hair. You can apply it with an angled eyeshadow brush, which you should be able to find at a cosmetic store or perfumery. Make-up products are usually advertised to a female market, but this method can also be used by men, as the overall goal is to fill in the eyebrows to a natural result.
- Gently trace the lower part of the eyebrows following the natural direction of the hair.
- Make quick and gentle passes. It may be necessary to apply several layers of the product to be able to obtain a natural color similar to that of your eyebrows.
- Once the lower outline has been drawn, move on to the upper one. Repeat the same gentle movements following the arch of the eyebrow.
Step 3. Brush your brows
To remove any lumps, you should brush your brows to even out the color. Use a special toothbrush. Alternatively, wash a mascara brush. Brush or brush over your eyebrows following the direction of the hair. Make all the passes necessary to obtain a homogeneous and natural result.
Step 4. Use an eyebrow pencil or eyeshadow
Even out your brows, use a pencil or eyeshadow to darken them slightly in the center. Choose a tone that works well with the natural hair color. This will make them appear more defined.
- Draw a line in the center of the eyebrow. Avoid drawing around the edges, otherwise you risk making them unnatural.
- Do not press the pencil or brush too hard. The line should be soft and blend with the rest of the eyebrow. If you press too hard, you risk finding yourself with an unnatural result.
Step 5. Set your eyebrows
You can buy clear brow gel at a cosmetic store. Its function is similar to that of hair spray. Fix the product, preventing it from smudging or fading during the day. Once you have finished making up your eyebrows, apply a single coat of gel on both of them.
Method 3 of 3: Consider Micropigmentation
Step 1. Know the benefits and risks
Micropigmentation is a permanent cosmetic procedure, similar to a tattoo. By means of a special instrument, the pigments are implanted directly into the skin. It is usually most effective for those with darker complexions and for covering the patches around the lips.
- What is the main benefit of micropigmentation? As this is a permanent form of make-up, you won't have to worry about make-up in the future. If you have expanding discolorations and can't easily cover them with make-up, micropigmentation may be the option for you.
- Micropigmentation can also come with disadvantages. It can be difficult to find pigments suitable for the patient's skin, not to mention that the pigmentation can fade over time. In rare cases, scarring from the process can cause further patches to form, making vitiligo worse.
Step 2. Find out about the costs of the treatment
The costs of micropigmentation are between 500 and 2000 euros. Since this is a cosmetic surgery, you generally have to pay for it entirely out of your own pocket. Consequently, payment must be made at the time of the transaction or in advance. Contact a dermatologist for a quote and determine if it is a feasible treatment for your budget.
Step 3. Prepare for the procedure
Should you decide to undergo micropigmentation, follow the necessary steps to prepare yourself. You will first need to make an appointment with a dermatologist to determine if you can actually perform the operation. The specialist will ask you to explain your medical history in detail to make sure that your health is not an impediment. It will also explain the potential risks to you. If the outcome of the visit is favorable and you are sure you want to continue, you can fix the day of the surgery.
Step 4. Deal with the healing phase following the surgery
Complete recovery generally takes four to six weeks. During this time, you will need to go to the dermatologist to determine if further treatments are needed. During the recovery phase you will be instructed to put ice packs on the skin to prevent possible swelling. The dermatologist will also prescribe a cream or ointment to help the healing process.
