The choice to use a hydrogen peroxide-based mouthwash may have several reasons. Some people use it on the advice of the dentist, others because they want a product containing fewer ingredients than the mouthwashes that are on the market. However, pure hydrogen peroxide is very aggressive, so it is important to dilute it with water. This simple recipe uses only 2 ingredients: water and hydrogen peroxide. If the taste bothers you, you can flavor it.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Simple Mouthwash
Step 1. Pour 250ml of lukewarm water into a dark glass or plastic bottle, as light causes the hydrogen peroxide to deteriorate faster
Use distilled or filtered water.
Step 2. Add 250ml of 3% hydrogen peroxide
A higher percentage could be harmful to the teeth.
Step 3. Close the bottle and shake it to mix the ingredients
Keep it in a cool, dark place until you want to use it.
Step 4. Do not use the mouthwash more than 2 times a day
Pour some into a cup. Shake the solution in your mouth and gargle for about 30 seconds, then spit it out. Rinse your mouth with water and discard any remaining mouthwash in the cup.
Method 2 of 2: Flavored Mouthwash
Step 1. Pour 250ml of water into a dark glass bottle
Use only filtered or distilled water. If you want a peppermint mouthwash, you can also use a peppermint or spearmint hydrosol.
Avoid using plastic bottles: essential oils can cause it to deteriorate over time
Step 2. Add 120ml of 3% hydrogen peroxide
It is very important to avoid using it in higher percentages, otherwise you risk damaging your teeth. In any case, this is the type of hydrogen peroxide usually available on the market.
Step 3. Add 7-10 drops of essential oil, preferably peppermint or spearmint
You can also try other types, such as cloves, grapefruit, lemon, rosemary, or orange.
- Mixing the essential oil with a tablespoon (about 20g) of honey will help emulsify it.
- Skip this step if the mouthwash is to be used by a child.
Step 4. Close the bottle and shake it to mix the ingredients
Remember to do this even before each use.
Step 5. Use the mouthwash after mixing the ingredients by beating the bottle
Measure one cap, then shake it in your mouth and gargle. Spit it out and rinse your mouth with water.
- Do not ingest the mouthwash.
- Keep it in a cool, dark place.
Advice
- Store it in a cool, dark cabinet.
- Use a dark bottle, even better if it's opaque.
