Amarula is a delicious South African cream liqueur made from sugar, cream and the fruit of the marula tree. This liqueur with a creamy texture and citrus flavor tastes great when served with ice or added to a cocktail. Some of the most popular drinks? Amarula with coffee, coconut-based cocktails or other fruits and Amarula smoothie. By following the correct steps and using the right ingredients, you can make different drinks at home with this liqueur!

Amarula with Coffee
- 1-2 shots of Amarula
- 200-250 ml of coffee
- Whipped cream (optional)
- 4-8 marshmallows (optional)
- 2 g of brown sugar
- 2 g of cocoa powder

Amarula Cocktail and Coconut Water or Orange Liqueur
- 1 shot of Amarula
- 1 shot of coconut water or 1 shot of Triple Sec
- 80 g of crushed ice

Amarula smoothie
- 3-4 scoops of vanilla ice cream
- 1 cup (240 ml) of milk
- 2 shots of Amarula
- Whipped cream (optional)
- Chocolate syrup (optional)

Steps
Method 1 of 4: Serve the Amarula with Ice
Step 1. Put 3-4 ice cubes in a Rock glass
Fill a Rock glass with 3-4 large square ice cubes to the brim. If using smaller cubes, fill the glass halfway.
The ice will keep the liquor cold, making the drink more refreshing
Step 2. Fill the glass halfway with Amarula
Pour the Amarula over the ice cubes. It is not necessary to fill the glass to the top with the liqueur.
Step 3. Sip your drink
Drink the Amarula slowly to fully enjoy the creamy and citrusy notes of the liqueur. Once you have finished it, you can refill the glass.
As the ice cubes melt, the Amarula will become less dense
Method 2 of 4: Drink Amarula with Coffee
Step 1. Pour the coffee into a large cup
Make coffee using an American coffee maker, plunger coffee maker, or another method. Then, pour 200-250ml of coffee into a cup three-quarters full. This will leave enough room for the remaining ingredients.
- You can also go to the coffee shop and buy ready-made hot or cold coffee.
- If you want to make a cold drink, let the coffee cool before adding 3-4 ice cubes to the drink.
- If you use a smaller cup, use less coffee as well.
Step 2. Add 1-2 shots of Amarula to the coffee and mix
Carefully pour the liqueur into a shot glass or jigger. Then, pour it into the coffee cup. Mix the ingredients well with a spoon.
- If you want to accentuate the flavor of Amarula, add 2 small glasses of liqueur. If you prefer a more balanced-tasting coffee drink, use only 1.
- Adding too much liquor could overwhelm the taste of the drink.
Step 3. Sprinkle whipped cream on the drink
Press the can nozzle to spray the whipped cream onto the surface of the coffee. The whipped cream helps enrich the creaminess of the Amarula and sweeten the drink.
- Add the amount of whipped cream you want.
- Fat-free whipped cream does not have the same rich taste that distinguishes traditional whipped cream.
Step 4. Sprinkle some brown sugar and a handful of marshmallows over the whipped cream
Sprinkle 2 grams of brown sugar on the cream and place 4-8 marshmallows on the top of the drink to sweeten it. The sweet notes of the sugar create a good balance with the sour taste of the coffee and the creaminess of the Amarula.
If you don't like overly sweet coffee drinks, exclude marshmallows from the garnish
Step 5. Complete the preparation of the drink with cocoa powder or hot chocolate mix
This product will make the drink even richer. Wait for it to cool down before drinking so you don't burn your tongue if the coffee is still hot.
Method 3 of 4: Make a Cocktail with Coconut Water or Orange Liqueur
Step 1. Put 80g of crushed ice in a cocktail shaker
Buy pre-crushed ice or do the procedure at home by chopping it with a blender. As it melts, it will reduce the creaminess of the drink, improving its taste.
If you don't have a cocktail shaker, put the cubes in a tall glass instead
Step 2. Pour 1 small glass of Amarula and 1 small glass of coconut water into the shaker
Measure the liqueur and coconut water carefully using a shot glass or jigger to use the right amounts. If you prefer to make a citrus cocktail, replace the coconut water with a shot of Triple Sec.
- You can also substitute coconut water for a shot of gin if you prefer to make a martini.
- If you want the cocktail to be even stronger, add 2 small glasses of Amarula to the drink.
Step 3. Shake the drink to mix all the ingredients well
Shake the shaker vigorously to mix everything and allow the crushed ice to partially melt. The crushed ice will thus join the liqueur.
If you don't have a shaker, take a glass and place its upper part inside the glass containing the Amarula, in order to seal it tightly. Then, holding both glasses, shake the drink to mix the ingredients
Step 4. Pour the drink into a cocktail glass and serve it
It is not necessary to filter it, as the presence of ice will make it delicious. If you used Triple Sec instead of coconut water, garnish the drink with orange zest to complete the preparation.
Method 4 of 4: Make an Amarula Smoothie
Step 1. Place 3-4 scoops of vanilla ice cream in the jug of a blender and add 1 cup (240ml) of milk
Use whichever brand of ice cream you prefer. Measure the milk with a measuring jug to use the right amount. Then, pour it over the ice cream.
If you don't have an ice cream scoop, use a large spoon instead
Step 2. Pour 1-2 small glasses of Amarula into the jug and blend
Measure the Amarula with a jigger or shot glass. Then, pour each shot into the blender jar and turn it on at maximum power. Continue to blend the drink until the ice cream is completely incorporated into the ice, obtaining a smooth and homogeneous drink.
Step 3. Pour the drink into a glass and garnish it
If you want to sweeten the smoothie further, sprinkle some whipped cream or squeeze some chocolate syrup on the drink. Keep in mind that ice cream and Amarula are already sweet, so adding more sugar will sweeten the drink even more. Serve the drink while it is cold.
