Are you craving for a milkshake, but don't have a blender available? Don't worry, there are several ways to be able to quickly mix ingredients without too much effort. For example, you can use a large tureen, any container with a lid or even a shaker.
Ingrediants
- Milk
- Ice-cream
- Whipped cream (optional)
- Additional ingredients to taste: cocoa powder, fruit, candies, cookies, etc.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Use a Container with Lid
Step 1. Look for a fairly large Tupperware-type container with a lid, or a shaker
Since you don't have a blender available, you can mix the ingredients in a closed container, for example in a shaker or food container.
- Between the two options it is better to choose the container with a lid that will allow you to store any leftovers. As a further possibility, you can use a glass jar, provided of course it comes complete with a lid.
- If you want the ingredients to be "whipped", the best choice is to use a shaker.
- On the market there are steel containers, similar to bottles, which have the double function of container and shaker thanks to a small sphere contained inside that serves to mix the ingredients when it is shaken. Their name is "blender bottle", do a quick online search to find out more. Remember that if you are going to use one of these bottles, you must mix the milk and powder ingredients before adding the ice cream.
Step 2. Add the ice cream to the container
Since you cannot use the blender, it is advisable to choose ice cream with a light consistency. A very thick ice cream would allow you to make a creamier milkshake, but it's not easy to mix. By opting for a lighter ice cream, you'll get a smoother, yet equally delicious milkshake.
- To make the ice cream easier to portion and mix with the other ingredients, it is recommended to leave it at room temperature for 10-15 minutes before using it. Alternatively, you can heat it in the microwave for about twenty seconds.
- Instead of ice cream, you can also use a sorbet or frozen yogurt.
- Try making ice cream at home, it will taste great and be easier to mix.
Step 3. Add the milk
Pour the milk into the container with the ice cream. The proportion that you must respect is one part of milk for every three parts of ice cream.
- As with ice cream, the higher the percentage of fat in the milk, the creamier the milkshake will be.
- If you are going to use a powdered ingredient, for example malt or protein, it is essential to mix it with the milk before adding it to the ice cream.
- If you have a blender bottle containing a small ball that acts as a whisk, use it to mix in the powdered milk ingredient.
Step 4. If desired, add other ingredients of your choice
If you want to give an extra touch of flavor, and color, to the milkshake, you can pour a few pieces of fruit, chocolate chips, crumbled sweets or any ingredient you like directly on the ice cream.
If you have chosen to add pieces of fruit, biscuit, or candy, shred them in a bowl or mortar first. The smaller they are, the easier it becomes to mix them in the milkshake
Step 5. Mash and mix the ingredients with a spoon
Before starting to mix them to obtain a soft and light consistency, give the contents of the container a good stir with a spoon. By mashing and mixing the ingredients, you will be able to distribute them better, while at the same time softening the ice cream slightly.
Keep mashing and stirring until there are only a few lumps left and the consistency appears uniform enough
Step 6. Now put the lid on the container or shaker and start shaking it vigorously
Shake it well so that the milk, aromas and ice cream blend harmoniously with each other.
- Shake the container just like you do with the shaker when making a cocktail. Grab it from above and below, then shake it vigorously by moving it up and down.
- Shake the ingredients for about 15 seconds. If it feels like the consistency is still too firm, continue for a few more seconds.
Step 7. Enjoy your milkshake
After shaking the container vigorously, you can finally remove the lid, take a straw and taste. If the milkshake seems too liquid, add another scoop of ice cream. Conversely, if it is too thick, pour in a little more milk and shake the ingredients a little more.
When you are satisfied with the result, enjoy it using a spoon or a straw
Method 2 of 2: Use a Tureen
Step 1. Choose a large bowl
Since you don't have a blender available, you need a container large enough to allow you to easily mix and whip all the ingredients.
- Note that a hand blender, electric whisk or food processor can replace the blender quite comfortably.
- If you don't have any of these tools, you can use a hand whisk.
Step 2. Add the ice cream
Remember that a light ice cream will result in a soft and "airy" milkshake, while a thicker one will make it creamier. If you have chosen a flavor that contains solid ingredients, such as biscuit or candy pieces, it is best to leave it at room temperature for a while to make it easier to work with.
- To make the ice cream easier to portion and mix with the other ingredients, it is recommended to leave it at room temperature for 10-15 minutes before using it. Alternatively, you can heat it in the microwave for about twenty seconds.
- If you have chosen to use a sorbet or frozen yogurt, there is no need to take them out of the freezer long in advance as they are naturally softer.
- If you want to add fruit or treats, cut or break them into small pieces before mixing them with the rest of the ingredients.
Step 3. Add the milk by pouring it over the ice cream
The recommended proportion is one part of milk for every three parts of ice cream.
- As with ice cream, the higher the percentage of fat in the milk, the creamier the milkshake will be.
- If you want to use a powdered ingredient, remember to mix it with the milk before pouring it into the bowl. Dissolving the powder directly in the milk is much easier than trying to distribute it evenly in the ice cream mixture. Use a blender bottle, if you have one, or simply mix the ingredients with a spoon or fork.
Step 4. Mix the ingredients
At this point, you have several options at your disposal, make your choice based on the consistency you want to give to your milkshake. If you want the individual ingredients to still be partially distinguishable in the mouth, it is best to use a spoon or potato masher. If, on the other hand, you want to get a smooth and homogeneous consistency, try using a kitchen whisk.
If you have electric whisks, you can mix the ingredients as you would if you were making cake dough
Step 5. Check if the consistency is correct
Grab a spoon and taste the milkshake to see if it has the density and creaminess you want.
If necessary, you can add a little milk to dilute it or another scoop of ice cream to thicken it
Step 6. Pour it into a glass
The ideal is to pour as much as possible. This way it will keep its consistency longer, without risking melting, liquefying or thickening.
- If you want the milkshake to keep super cold, leave the glass in the freezer for the entire time of preparation.
- If you like, you can top it off with a puff of whipped cream and a colored straw.
- Finished, it's time to enjoy your milkshake!
Advice
- Try using chocolate milk instead of milk and cocoa.
- If you want your milkshake to have a very thick texture, put it in the freezer for a while. Don't forget to check it often to prevent it from freezing completely.
- Do not keep the ice cream at room temperature for too long, otherwise it will risk melting, giving the milkshake a too liquid and soggy consistency.
- If you want to use chocolate, don't use the cold hard one but soften it slightly first.
- The flavor of soluble barley will quickly make you a baby again. Alternatively, you can try using a soluble preparation to make almond milk or chocolate milk.
