In the United States, a detergent solution of ammonia and soap can be found; the trade name is "Sudsy Ammonia". It is a premixed product widely sold in overseas supermarkets. In Italy it is difficult to find something similar, which we can call "soapy ammonia." With this article you will also be able to prepare this detergent and save money, since the cost of the various ingredients is always lower than the market price of the finished product. In addition, in this way, you can also vary the concentration adapting it to the various cleaning jobs. Use it without adding the detergent instead of the branded product to clean the window panes.
Steps
Step 1. Get a concentrated ammonia solution
You can easily find it in supermarkets in the detergent department. Eventually, you can try hardware stores and where industrial cleaners are sold. Buy the smallest bottle possible, as you won't need much.
Step 2. Put on the rubber gloves and goggles:
ammonia can burn the skin and eyes.
Step 3. Make sure the area where you prepare the mixture is well ventilated
Step 4. Do not lean over the bottles while you are pouring the products
Step 5. Plan to be over a sink when you pour the solution and prepare the product to prevent any spills from causing damage
Step 6. Get a 350ml plastic spray bottle
These bottles are easily found in grocery, household or hardware stores. The basic safety rules say never to reuse old clean commercial bottles. Old labels or color combinations can be confusing, while new bottles are inexpensive.
Step 7. First of all, fill the bottle with tap water
Always add ammonia to the water and not the other way around.
Step 8. Pour approximately 80ml of water into the bottle to make room for ammonia
Step 9. Using a funnel, pour approximately 80ml of ammonia into the bottle
Step 10. Add a splash of dish soap
Step 11. Close the bottle tightly
Step 12. Shake it gently
Step 13. Write "Soapy Ammonia" on the bottle with a permanent marker
Step 14. Write "Danger:
Do not mix with bleach.
Step 15. Also write "POISON" and keep the solution out of the reach of children
Step 16. Also include the phone number of the nearest poison control center in your city on the bottle
Advice
- Make the stainless steel shine.
- Remove cigarette odors from rooms. Place a saucer with the solution in the room for an hour and you will see how clean and fresh it will smell without that floral or fruity smell of commercial air fresheners.
- Clean hard gemstone jewelry, such as diamond, sapphire, ruby or rings. (Never use anything water based on an opal.)
- Remove the wax from old tile floors or linoleum.
Warnings
- Never mix ammonia with bleach. It would cause a gas called chloramine, which will be able to kill you.
- Never mix ammonia with any other product, unless you have been instructed to do so. It could create poisonous vapors.
- Do not use this product on car windows with UV protection or tint, ammonia could remove them. In this case it is sufficient to use water or a specific detergent for car windows.
