Sleep is usually a luxury for the parents of a newborn. When your baby spends the night sleeping, you can often do the same. One of the ways you can increase the quality and duration of your baby's sleep is to keep him warm in the crib. Watch the baby for signs that he is cold. Look for any red spots on the skin and feel if your hands, feet or cheeks are cold. If you find that your baby is cold, you can use the steps below to keep him warm.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Prepare the nursery to keep the baby warm
Step 1. Change the room temperature
- A quick adjustment of the thermostat is enough to raise the temperature in the room. The child will be more comfortable in a room with a temperature that is maintained between 21 and 22 degrees.
- You can put a heater to heat the room. To avoid burns and the risk of fire, choose a warmer that is cool to the touch. Place the warmer at least one meter from the cradle. For added safety, place the warmer behind a baby grate, especially if the little one moves. Keep the area around the heater free from toys, clothes and other flammable objects.
Step 2. Place the crib in an ideal position
Move the crib so that it is somewhere in the room away from doors and windows. Also make sure that the crib is not exposed to drafts from fans or air vents. These can create drafts that are too cold or too hot for the baby.
Step 3. Cover the cot mattress with a plush blanket or flannel sheet
These materials act as an insulator under the child's body, whose heat emitted is returned to his body. Another benefit of the blanket is that it acts as a moisture barrier, preventing liquids such as urine or milk from soaking the mattress.
Step 4. Pre-heat the crib with a hot water bottle or electric blanket
This will warm the bed, making it the perfect place to fall asleep. Put the electric blanket or hot water bottle under the mattress, sheets or blankets so that the area in contact with the baby does not get too hot. Remove the electric blanket before putting the baby to bed.
Method 2 of 2: Keeping the baby warm in the crib
Step 1. Swaddle the baby to keep him warm
With the sheet wrapped around the baby, the heat from his body does not dissipate and keeps him warm. This is ideal for newborns, who feel safe in tight spaces. Growing up, however, being confined may frustrate him.
Place a soft blanket, microfiber or similar, under it
Step 2. Dress the baby in heavier clothing
The baby will be warmer in one-piece pajamas or a sleeping bag. You can also put a skullcap on it. Many pajamas also have hand protectors to cover them and keep them warm.
Step 3. Dress it in layers
Put a onesie under your pajamas or have him wear long-sleeved pajamas and put him in a sleeping bag. More layers will keep him warm more than just putting on one heavy piece.
Advice
Consider using a sleeping bag. Look for one that fits the child's size, and with a two-way zipper to allow air to circulate. Make sure it's sleeveless to avoid getting too hot. The baby will be comfortable and warm in this bag
Warnings
- Don't overdo the heat. It can happen to make the baby stay in an excessive heat. A baby who is too hot may sleep too deeply to wake up on his own if he stops breathing.
- Don't cover it with blankets. They can lead him to suffocate.
- The heater consumes a lot of electricity. Expect a double electricity bill if you leave it on all night in her bedroom.
