You have just moved to the United States and you are unable to estimate the speed expressed in miles per hour because you cannot convert the figure to kilometers per hour or you are a cricket enthusiast, but you just can't get used to the speed statistics of the jumps that are indicated with the Anglo-Saxon system. Either way, you don't have to worry! With a little knowledge and a calculator on hand you can easily convert miles per hour to kilometers per hour.

Part 1 of 2: Understanding the Units of Measure
Step 1. Know the length of a mile
It is a unit of measurement that is based on the ancient Roman system and corresponds to "a thousand steps". Although the exact length has changed over time, one mile currently equals exactly 5280 feet.
Step 2. Learn the length of a kilometer (km)
It is a unit of measurement of the length of the metric system, in which each unit is a multiple of ten of the previous one; the meter is the basic unit and the kilometer equals 1000 meters.
Step 3. Understand distance in relation to time
Each unit of distance measurement does not have much meaning in itself; in order to evaluate this value in terms of speed, it is necessary to add the time component. The most used method to define speed is to consider how many miles or kilometers a body travels in an hour; in other words, divide the number "X" of kilometers or miles by an hour.
Part 2 of 2: Converting Miles per Hour to Kilometers per Hour
Step 1. Convert mile into kilometer
Since these are two different units of measurement, you must first convert the distance of a mile to a kilometer and then compare the data with time; 1 mile = 1, 6093440 km.
Alternatively, if you want to convert kilometers to miles, you have to reverse the equivalence; 1 km = 0.6214 miles
Step 2. Get speed in miles per hour (MPH)
Now that you know the basic information about these distances, you are able to convert the velocity values. The only missing data is that relating to the speed expressed in miles per hour and which you want to transform into kilometers per hour (km / h). For example, consider the value of 95 MPH.
Step 3. Multiply by 1.60934 (the kilometer equivalent of a mile)
Once you get the speed information in MPH, just multiply it by 1.60934 and get the equivalent in kilometers per hour; considering the example of 95 MPH: 95 x 1, 60934 = 152, 887 km / h.
If you are performing the reverse transformation, you must use the appropriate conversion factor (1 km = 0.6214 miles) and multiply the speed in km / h by 0.6214; considering the previous example of 152, 887 km / h: 152, 887 x 0, 6214 = 95 MPH
Advice
- As a general rule, remember that the number expressing speed in kilometers per hour is greater than the equivalent in miles per hour.
- The speedometer of the vehicles shows both the scale in kilometers per hour and that in miles per hour.
- Speed limit road signs in the United States, Liberia, Myanmar and the United Kingdom are all in miles per hour (although in Britain the metric system is used for almost everything else).
