Have you always wanted to find diamonds, but didn't know where to start looking? Or maybe you need a diamond pickaxe, to collect obsidian and reach the Nether, or create a spell table? Diamonds are very precious, so your task will not be the easiest. With a few tips and a little luck, however, you can greatly increase the chances of finding diamonds. That's how.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Make an Iron or Diamond Pickaxe
Step 1. To collect diamond, you will need a diamond or iron pickaxe
You will not be able to collect this stone with other tools, so first you will need to be able to build one of these two picks. If you already have a diamond or iron pickaxe and want some advice on finding diamonds, skip to the next section.
Step 2. Create a crafting table if you haven't already
You can do this by placing 4 wooden planks in the spaces of the creation area. To create the planks, simply place a block of wood in the creation area.
Step 3. Make a wooden pickaxe
Put the following items on your crafting table:
- 3 wooden planks in the top horizontal row of the grid.
- 2 sticks in the vertical line in the center of the grid.
Step 4. Make a stone pickaxe
With your wooden pickaxe, dig four blocks down until you find some stone. Collect three stone blocks, making sure you still have two sticks at your disposal. Put the following items on the crafting table:
- 3 stone blocks in the top horizontal row of the grid.
- 2 sticks in the vertical line in the center of the grid.
Step 5. Build or find a furnace
For the next step you will need a furnace. You can find one in NPC villages, or you can create one using 8 stone blocks, lined up around the outer edge of your crafting table.
Step 6. Build an Iron Pickaxe
With your stone pickaxe, start looking for iron ore. You can find it on the surface and in caves. You will only need 3 iron ores.
Melt the iron ore in the furnace using coal to create an iron ingot. Alternatively, you can turn an iron block into 9 ingots
Step 7. Make an iron pickaxe by placing the following items on the crafting table:
- 3 iron ingots in the top horizontal row of the grid.
- 2 sticks in the vertical line in the center of the grid.
Method 2 of 2: Dig for Diamonds
Step 1. Before starting, please note that it is possible in some cases to find diamonds on the surface in randomly generated chests
You can find them in abandoned villages or mines. While it is possible to find diamonds without digging them, you will generally be less successful with this method. If you want to harvest them effectively, you will need to dig.
Step 2. Make sure you have adequate supplies before heading out to search for diamonds
To be able to find the diamonds, you will need the following items:
- Many flashlights (more than 100).
- An iron or diamond pickaxe.
- Weapons and armor, should you encounter monsters.
Step 3. You can find diamonds from height 1 to height 16
Diamonds are most abundantly distributed between heights 8 and 13, and reach their maximum frequency at height 12. Diamond blocks occur in small veins of 1 to 10 blocks. There is a chance to find more than 10 neighboring blocks, if the world random generator has been kind to you.
Step 4. Create a staircase that goes down
To do this, dig a hole of three blocks, then dig three blocks in front of them, starting with the center block of the first hole and ending a block below. Repeat until you reach the desired height. Keep digging with your pickaxe, and come back every 10 minutes to stock up on food, leave the materials you found in a chest, and craft more pickaxes and swords, etc.
Step 5. When you reach the indestructible stone, dig around to reach the lowest level
That will be height 0.
Step 6. Climb up to height 12 (1 block is 1 tall), and create a small room
Place a chest, crafting table, and furnace so you don't have to go all the way back to the surface to build more tools.
Step 7. Start digging using a pattern
There are many patterns you can use to find diamonds. Here are some that have performed well to other players:
- Create a main cutout that is 2 blocks high and 1 block wide that runs in a straight line for a good distance. Create small arms that start at the main excavation and branch off five blocks apart. Dig the arms 2 blocks high and 2 blocks wide.
- Proceed in a straight line in sections of 3x3 until you find diamonds.
Step 8. If you can, use a Luck spell on your pickaxe while digging
Using this spell will allow you to collect more diamonds when you dig. There are three levels of this spell.
Level 1 gives you a 33% chance to double your collection (an average increase of 33%), Level 2 a 25% chance to double and triple your collection (an average 75% increase), while Level 3 gives you a 20% chance to multiply your collection by 2, by 3 and by 4 (an average increase of 120%). The level 3 Luck spell is extremely rare, so you will probably have to settle for level 1 or 2
Step 9. Dig around a diamond block before collecting it
The diamond is often close to the lava; when you dig it, there is a chance that the diamonds could accidentally fall into the lava, and be destroyed. Diamonds are very valuable, so it's best to make sure they fall into your inventory, not lava.
Place stone blocks under the diamond if it is above a lava pool. In this way, even if the diamonds fell, they would not be destroyed by the lava
Advice
- Bring a bucket of water with you when you dig, in case of close encounters with the lava. This way you will avoid being burned, you will be able to collect diamonds safely and also obtain obsidian.
- You can also find gold at the heights where you will find the diamond.
- You will rarely be able to find diamonds with texture packs, because they can only show you the blocks that show the surface. You can use a mod to find diamonds, but it won't be quite as rewarding.
- Always watch out for monsters.
Warnings
- Never dig directly under your feet, unless you are trying to break a speed record in collecting diamonds, as you may encounter lava. For the same reason, you shouldn't dig directly over your head either.
- Watch out for creepers, they are born fast and can make you explode.
