Some Minecraft players prefer a nomadic lifestyle, but if you are a beginner, it is best to start by building a house, which can protect you from hostile monsters and increase your chances of survival. With this guide, you can forget your old earth hut!
Steps
Method 1 of 4: Preparing to Build a House
Step 1. Decide what kind of house you want to build
You can use many different styles for your builds in creative mode, but in this article we will just list the six simplest types, suitable for survival mode.
- Classic: Classic constructions are mainly composed of large quantities of quartz and white blocks, to obtain a monochromatic scale. Usually, they have large pillars, vaulted ceilings and sloping roofs.
- Modern: Even modern constructions are mainly made of quartz. However, unlike the classic ones, they are mainly composed of geometric shapes and clear and flat surfaces.
- Historic: Historic buildings are mainly built with sand blocks and various types of stone. As the name suggests, they recall the style of ancient buildings, often in ruins.
- Industrial: Industrial dwellings especially use player-created materials, such as iron blocks, hatches, and glass. They are inspired by industrial plants and made up of geometric figures.
- Steampunk: Steampunk constructions are mainly characterized by gears. They employ blocks similar to those of the rustic style, but usually have more sloping sloping roofs and smaller lower floors than the upper ones.
- Rustic: Rustic dwellings are among the most common and usually resemble small comfortable cottages. A lot of natural blocks are needed, such as wood and stone, making them some of the simplest structures to build.
Step 2. Find a place that fits your project
Generally, it is best to build the house in a biome that has blocks similar to the ones you will use for the structure. A historic temple within a forest would not be appropriate, as would a classic-style house on top of a mountain.
Step 3. Think about whether you want to use other colored blocks
In addition to the main ones mentioned above, consider what other options you have available to add a pop of color to your home.
- Analogous Colors: Using analogous colors is the simplest choice and involves using two adjacent shades on the color wheel.
- Complementary colors: Complementary shades are found in opposite positions on the color wheel; they create a strong contrast that produces a mind-blowing effect for the final project.
- Triadic Colors: Triadic colors are probably the most complicated to use, because it involves choosing three shades that are at the same distance on the color wheel. You can get such a pattern by using redstone, yellow earthenware, and blue wool.
- Monochromatic effect: The monochromatic scale only uses shades from white to black. These colors offer great contrast and are useful for balancing the presence of many colored blocks.
Step 4. Decide what kind of lighting to use
Light is needed to prevent monsters from spawning inside your home and, when used correctly, can produce great visual effects.
- The lighting level must always be above 7, because monsters can spawn on all blocks with less light.
- Experiment! Everyone knows that torches and lava produce light. However, you can also use brown mushrooms, dragon eggs, and End chests as lighting.
Step 5. Create a small base
You don't need many objects, the simplest ones will suffice: a bed, a workbench, a furnace, a couple of trunks and a stonecutter, which you will need to make some blocks of stone.
You can also surround your base with walls, but this is not necessary if you are going to sleep before sunset and the arrival of the monsters
Step 6. Get the materials
You probably don't have full diamond gear or spells yet, so you should only build your ultimate home after you get them. It can take hours to find everything you need, so it's easier to set up a temporary home before committing to a big project.
Some materials for certain styles are more difficult to obtain than others. Consequently, if you'd rather not risk venturing into the Nether to retrieve the quartz, create a house with a different style, such as steampunk or rustic
Method 2 of 4: Create a Home
Step 1. Build the main house structure
This way, you will have a basic model for the project.
It is easy to expand a home, while it is more difficult to shrink it. Evaluate in advance how much space you need
Step 2. Pull up the walls
You could make them entirely and add windows later, but if you're short on materials, leaving window spaces already is a better idea.
Your house doesn't have to be a big cube. Consider adding various shapes for the windows and roofs
Step 3. Build the roof and floor
Using the materials you want, make the roof and excavate the floor.
You can use various types of flooring for your home, but to achieve a symmetrical look, choose just one
Step 4. Create the windows
You can use regular glass if you like, but colored glass can add a pop of vibrancy to your project.
Step 5. Add the lighting
You must absolutely avoid that a creeper appears unexpectedly in the house and, to do so, you must make sure that the lighting level is higher than 7. To get this information, press F3 or Fn + F3 (on Mac) and look for the entry "block light", which is immediately below the direction you are facing.
Step 6. Add a stair
You can place it wherever you like or where you consider it most useful.
Spiral staircases are usually more suited to cramped spaces, while large spacious stairways can fit into larger projects
Step 7. Start developing the second plan
Often, more space can be needed and a second floor could be handy: adding one, your project will become more complex and the house will have a more impressive appearance.
The second floor does not always have to be the same size as the first. You can make it bigger or smaller according to your needs
Step 8. Complete the walls
During this operation, remember to keep in mind where you will insert the windows and, perhaps, the possibility of making a third floor.
Step 9. Form the roof and third floor
This step can be especially difficult if you're planning on making a smaller plan. The basic rule is to always start from the base of the new level. This plan will define the shape of the roof and not vice versa.
If you think you don't need the third floor, just build the roof
Step 10. Add lighting
Again, you need to avoid monsters spawning inside the house, so be sure to press F3 to check the light level in your house.
Step 11. Build the walls and windows
Decide where to place them. On the third floor it can be particularly useful to use partial blocks such as stairs, hatches and slabs, in order to add more space to the upper level of the house.
Step 12. Think about lighting again
Experiment leaving room for creativity. By combining chains and lanterns at the top of the house, you can achieve a spectacular effect.
Step 13. Light up the roof
Monsters can also spawn on the roof, if it is not built with partial or transparent blocks. To prevent this from happening, light it up, so you don't risk a creeper catching you before entering the house.
Remember to check the lighting level with F3. The same rule also applies to outsiders
Method 3 of 4: Customize the Exterior
Step 1. Dig a pool
While this is primarily an aesthetic improvement, a swimming pool is a fantastic idea for your home and perfectly complements homes built in arid places, such as deserts and savannas.
You will also need to light up the inside of the pool. If the lighting level of the water is below 7, Drowned people may appear, which are capable of killing you in large groups. The best way to light the pool is to use marine lanterns
Step 2. Remove all hills and mountains nearby
If you don't want to create a hidden house, remove all the neighboring hills so that you can see the surrounding area well.
Step 3. Add the doorbell
Bells can be used as decoration or as functional objects. They are quite difficult to obtain in survival mode, because they are only found in villages, in ruined portals or can be recovered with a trade.
Step 4. Create a mosaic floor
This step is particularly easy if you are on a plateau. Using hardened clay or concrete, create colorful patterns wherever you like. This can help you break up the monotony of the large amount of basic blocks you used to build the house.
You can also use wool, but remember that this material is poorly resistant to explosions and is flammable
Step 5. Add vases
You can place some planters outside your home to add color and complexity to your project.
You should use flowers of completely different colors than those in the house. In this way, you will create a contrast, which will make your home stand out more
Step 6. Plant some trees
These elements give the house the natural look it needs, no matter what biome it is in. Choose the type of tree that is most suitable for the region you occupy.
Step 7. Add street lights around the house
This way, no monsters will appear near your home. You can make them with simple fence posts and lanterns, or you can make giant fire beacons and lava fountains. The choice is yours!
Step 8. Build a line of defense
The simplest defense structure is a 1x1 moat built around your entire property, protected by berry bushes. When the monsters make contact with the bushes, they will not be able to jump out of the moat and will take damage.
You can also build walls around the house, but it will take a lot more resources. Also, you will need to add a parapet, which prevents spiders from climbing them
Method 4 of 4: Customize the Interior
Step 1. Create a retractable enchantment room
You'll have to enchant items, so why not use some redstone to make a spell table that only pops up when you need it!
To get a level 30 spell table, you will need at least 16 libraries
Step 2. Add some useful items
In general, you will need at least 8 melting and smoker furnaces, as well as 4 furnaces. This way, you will make full use of the space at your disposal and can quickly melt the materials, especially if you plan to spend a lot of time in the mines.
Step 3. Create a warehouse
By placing the trunks horizontally with respect to the walls and indicating what they contain with frames for the objects, you can create an intelligent storage system, for all your needs.
You can also use barrels, which take up more space and are less practical than trunks, except in tight spaces
Step 4. Place a magnetite
This material is capable of changing the orientation of your compass as you explore the surface of the world. While you should still mark the coordinates of your base, a magnetite is very useful indeed.
Step 5. Add the other useful items
Along with the furnaces, you will need other tools to progress through the game.
Usually an anvil, a forging bench, a stonecutter, a grinding wheel and a frame are required. You can also build a fletching and cartography bench, although you won't use them as often and therefore aren't strictly necessary
Step 6. Create your room
Of course, it will have to contain your bed and everything you want, such as mannequins, an End trunk and other chests in which to store your most precious objects.
Step 7. Add a Potions Lab
If you are not planning to build a completely separate building for this activity, consider preparing an area of the house for the creation of potions, with all the most important ingredients.
Although rarely used in survival mode, potions can be useful in some cases, for example against bosses and for obtaining rare upgrades
Step 8. Expand and explore
Create a bigger house! Add a farm! In Minecraft, the choices available to you are endless, so it's up to you to forge your own destiny.
Advice
- When setting up the bed, make sure it has enough space around it so you can get up easily and don't choke when you wake up.
- Bricks and crushed stone are better resistant to explosions than blocks of earth and glass.
- Usually, digging a house into a mountainside is a good place to start.
- If you want to learn how to plan and customize your home more efficiently, watch YouTube tutorials and study what homes look like in real life. A very useful channel to follow for this purpose is Grian.
- To save resources and make your home safer, you can build just the front on the side of a hill and dig up the rest of the blocks.
- Create an elevated dwelling to give you an advantage against the monsters.
- The best foundations are probably those found in the sky. If you build one, be sure to set up an elevator to get back to the ground.
