This wikiHow teaches you how to link to a file, folder, web page, or new document within Microsoft Excel. You can do this on both the Windows and Mac versions of the program.
Steps
Method 1 of 4: Create a Link to a New File
Step 1. Open an Excel document
Double-click the file where you want to insert a hyperlink.
If you prefer to create a new document double-click on the Excel icon, then select Blank workbook.
Step 2. Select the cell where you want to insert the hyperlink
Step 3. Click Insert
This is one of the green ribbon tabs at the top of the Excel window. Clicking on it will open the toolbar insert directly under the ribbon.
If you're using a Mac, don't confuse the card insert Excel with the menu insert of the computer menu bar.
Step 4. Click Hyperlink
It is located on the right side of the toolbar insert in the "Links" section. Click and a window will open.
Step 5. Click Create New Document
You will see the button on the left side of the window that has opened.
Step 6. Enter the hyperlink text
Write the sentence you want to appear in the cell in the "Text to display" field.
If you don't enter anything in that field, the link text will consist of the name of the new document
Step 7. Name the new document
Type it in the "Name of the new document" field.
Step 8. Click OK
The button is located at the bottom of the window. By default, a new spreadsheet will be created and opened, then a link to it will be created in the cell you selected.
You can also select the "Edit the new document later" option before clicking OK to create the spreadsheet and link without opening the newly created document.
Method 2 of 4: Create a Link to an Existing File or Web Page
Step 1. Open an Excel document
Double-click the file where you want to insert a hyperlink.
You can also open a new document by double clicking on the Excel icon, then selecting Blank workbook.
Step 2. Select the cell where you want to insert the hyperlink
Step 3. Click Insert
This is one of the green ribbon tabs at the top of the Excel window. Clicking on it will open the toolbar insert directly under the ribbon.

Step 4. Click Hyperlink
It is located on the right side of the toolbar insert in the "Links" section. Click and a window will open.
Step 5. Click Existing File or Web Page
It is located on the left side of the window.
Step 6. Enter the link text
Write the sentence you want to appear in the cell in the "Text to display" field.
If you don't type anything in this field, the hyperlink text will simply be the path to the linked item
Step 7. Select a destination
Click one of the following tabs:
- Current folder: Search for files in folders Documents or Desktop
- Pages viewed: search among the web pages you have recently visited
- Recent files: Search recently opened files in Excel
Step 8. Select a file or web page
Click the file, folder or web address you want to link to. The folder path will appear in the "Address" field at the bottom of the window.
You can also copy a URL from the internet into the "Address" field
Step 9. Click OK at the bottom of the page
The hyperlink will be created in the cell you selected.
Note that if you move the linked item, the hyperlink will no longer work
Method 3 of 4: Create a Link Inside the Document
Step 1. Open an Excel document
Double-click the file where you want to insert a hyperlink.
You can also open a new document by double clicking on the Excel icon, then selecting Blank workbook.
Step 2. Select the cell where you want to insert the hyperlink

Step 6. Enter the hyperlink text
Write the sentence you want to appear in the cell in the "Text to display" field.
If you don't write anything in this field, the link text will simply be the name of the linked cell
Step 7. Click OK
A link to the selected cell will be created. If you click the link, Excel will automatically highlight it.
Method 4 of 4: Create a Hyperlink to an Email Address
Step 1. Open an Excel document
Double-click the file where you want to insert a hyperlink.
You can also open a new document by double clicking on the Excel icon, then selecting Blank workbook.
Step 2. Select the cell where you want to insert the hyperlink
Step 3. Click Insert

Step 6. Enter the hyperlink text
Write the sentence you want to appear in the cell in the "Text to display" field.
If you don't change the link text, the email will appear as is
Step 7. Enter your email address
Type the e-mail you want to link to in the "E-mail address" field.
