This article teaches you how to create and use a MEGA cloud storage account. This service allows you to save up to 50GB of files for free.
Steps
Part 1 of 6: Creating an Account
Step 1. Open the MEGA website
To do this, visit https://mega.nz/ with your computer's web browser.
Step 2. Click Create an account
You will see this red button in the center of the page. Press it and the profile creation page will open.
Step 3. Enter your account information
Fill in the following text fields:
- Name and Surname - Enter your name and surname.
- E-Mail - Enter a working email that you have access to.
- Password - Write a password that is difficult to guess.
- Rewrite password - Type the password again to make sure that the two access keys you typed are identical.
Step 4. Check the box "I accept MEGA's terms of service"
You will see it at the bottom of the page.
Step 5. Click Create Account
You will find this button at the bottom of the page. Press it and you will create your MEGA account.
Step 6. Verify your account
To access your MEGA profile you must verify the e-mail you entered with the following procedure:
- Open the inbox of the e-mail you entered in the "E-mail" text field and log in if necessary;
- Click the message Verify MEGA Email required from "MEGA";
- Click the red button Check my address in the body of the message;
Step 7. Enter your password
In the "Password" field in the center of the page, enter the access key of your MEGA account.
Step 8. Click Confirm your account
It is a red button below the "Password" text field. Press it and the package selection page for your profile will open.
Step 9. Click FREE
This option is located on the left side of the page. Click it and you will select the free MEGA package, opening the cloud service storage page, where you can start creating folders and uploading files.
Part 2 of 6: Creating Folders
Step 1. Click New Folder
You will find this button at the top right of the MEGA page. Press it and a window will open.
Step 2. Choose a folder name
Type the name you want to assign to the folder in the text field in the newly opened window.
Step 3. Click Create
You will see this button at the bottom of the window. Press it and the folder will appear in the center of the MEGA window.
Step 4. Open the folder
To do this, double click on it.

Step 5. Go back to the main page of MEGA
To do this, click the cloud-shaped icon in the upper left of the page.
Step 6. Change the file view mode
Click ☰ at the top right of the page to see a vertical list of the folders or files in a path, or click ⋮⋮⋮ at the top right to display the file icons in a grid.
Step 7. Use the folder options
Move the mouse pointer over the folder and click ⋯ when it appears, then select one of the following options:
- Rename - Allows you to change the folder name.
- Move - Opens a menu where you can select a different path for the folder.
- Copy - Copy the folder and all its contents. You can paste the copied folders to other locations on your MEGA storage.
- Delete - Move the folder to the Trash.
Part 3 of 6: Uploading the Files
Step 1. Open a folder if necessary
If you want to upload a file to a specific location on your MEGA storage, first you need to open the folder in question by double clicking.
Step 2. Click File Upload
You will see this entry at the top right of the page.
If you want to upload an entire folder, click instead Upload folder.
Step 3. Select a file to upload
Open the file path on your computer, then click it once.
To select multiple files at once, hold down Ctrl (Windows) or ⌘ Command (Mac) while clicking all the files to copy
Step 4. Click Open
You will find this button in the lower right corner of the window. Press it and the files you selected will be uploaded to MEGA.
If you are uploading an entire folder, click Load.
Step 5. Wait for the upload to finish
It can take a few seconds or several hours, depending on the speed of your internet connection and the size of the files.
Step 6. Remove the files if necessary
To delete a file from MEGA, you can move it to the Trash:
- Select the file with the mouse pointer.
- Click ⋯ in the lower right corner of the file.
- Click Delete in the drop-down menu that appears.
- Click Yup when asked.
Step 7. Empty the Trash
Click the "Trash" icon, which looks like a triangle made with arrows and is located in the lower left corner of the window, click Empty the trash in the upper right section of the page, then click Empty when asked.
Part 4 of 6: Download the Files
Step 1. Find the file you want to download
Go to the path of the item you want to save on your computer.
For example, if it's in a folder, open it
Step 2. Select the file
To do this, click once on it.
- If you are using the grid view, be sure to click on the file's icon and not its name.
- You can select more than one file at a time by holding Ctrl (Windows) or ⌘ Command (Mac) while clicking on each item to download.
Step 3. Click ⋯
This icon is located in the lower right corner (grid mode) or far right of the file name (list mode). Press it and a drop-down menu will appear.
Step 4. Select Download…
This item is located in the drop-down menu. Press it and a menu will appear.
Step 5. Select a download option
In the newly appeared menu, click Standard Download to download the file as is or Download as ZIP to get the file in a ZIP folder. The download will start as soon as you click one of the buttons.
Part 5 of 6: Share Files
Step 1. Find a file or folder to share
Go to the route or item you want to share with another MEGA user.
Step 2. Select the file or folder
Click the icon of the item you want to share.
Step 3. Click ⋯
This button is located in the lower right corner of the file (grid mode) or on the far right of the file name (list mode). Press it and a drop-down menu will open.
Step 4. Click Sharing
You will see this item in the drop-down menu. Press it and the "Sharing" window will open.
Step 5. Enter an email
Write the address of the person with whom you want to share the file or folder in the text field in the center of the newly opened window.
You can add another email by pressing the Tab key ↹ after entering each address
Step 6. Select a sharing permission type
Check the box Read only, then choose one of the following options:
- Read only - The person you share the file or folder with can view, but not edit, the shared items.
- Reading & writing - The person you share the file or folder with can view and edit the shared items.
- Total control - The person you share the file or folder with can view, edit, delete and download the shared items.
Step 7. Click Done
You will see this button in the lower right corner of the window. Press it and it will send a share link to the email address you entered.
The recipient must have a MEGA account to open, view, edit or download the file or folder
Part 6 of 6: Using the MEGA Mobile App
Step 1. Download the MEGA app
The storage service offers a free mobile app for iPhone and Android platforms. To download it, open
the App Store of your iPhone or the
Google Play Store of your Android device, then follow these steps:
- iPhone - Press Search for, hit the search bar, type mega cloud storage and hit Search for, press GET to the right of the "MEGA" header, then enter your Touch ID or Apple ID password when prompted.
- Android - Press the search bar, type mega cloud, press MEGA in the search results, press INSTALL, finally press ACCEPT when asked.
Step 2. Open MEGA
Press the MEGA app icon, which looks like a red "M" on a white circle. The MEGA login page will open.
Step 3. Log in with your account credentials
Enter your email and password in the respective text fields, then press Log in to enter your MEGA profile.
On Android, press first LOGIN, then enter your credentials.
Step 4. Authorize permissions
If MEGA asks you for permission to use the phone's camera, pictures and other services, press OK or Authorize when asked.
If you are asked to authorize automatic video uploads, press Jump to continue.
Step 5. Create a folder
You can create a new empty folder in your MEGA storage with the following procedure:
- Awards ⋯ or ⋮ in the upper right corner of the screen.
- Awards New folder (iPhone) or Create new folder (Android).
- Enter a name for the folder.
- Awards Create.
Step 6. Upload a file
As you did on your computer, you can upload a file to MEGA from your smartphone or tablet:
- Awards ⋯ or ⋮ in the upper right corner of the screen.
- Awards Loading.
- Choose a path.
- Select a file.
- Awards Load to start downloading the file if selecting it does not happen automatically.
Step 7. Move an item to the Trash
To do this, follow these steps:
- Press and hold an item until a check mark appears next to it.
- Press the Trash icon in the lower right corner of the screen (on Android, press ⋮, then Move to the trash in the drop-down menu).
- Awards OK when asked (on Android, press instead DELETE).
Step 8. Empty the Trash
If you've moved items to the Trash, you can permanently delete them like this:
- Awards ⋯ in the top right corner of the screen (on Android, press TRASH CAN at the top of the screen, then skip the next step).
- Awards Trash can in the drop-down menu.
- Awards Jump if you are asked to upgrade to the Premium account.
- Select items by pressing the check mark in the upper right corner of the screen, then each item to delete (on Android, press and hold an item to select it).
- Press the icon Delete in the lower right corner of the screen (on Android, press X in the upper right corner of the screen).
- Awards OK when asked (on Android, press instead REMOVE).
Step 9. Share a file with other people
Contrary to what you did on desktop, you have to copy a link to the file and send it directly to another user with a MEGA account:
- Press and hold the file until you see a check mark appear next to it.
