At present, the Google Play Music mobile app does not allow you to add album art to music files. This means that you need to use the web platform to manually insert covers that the program was unable to detect automatically. You'll need to download the images to your computer, sign in with your Google Music account, browse your music library, and upload individual song or entire album art. Users using the mobile app must remember to use the "Update" feature to view the latest changes on their device.
Steps
Part 1 of 2: Adding the Covers on the Web Platform
Step 1. Search for the cover on the internet
Use Google's image search or browse album databases, such as Discogs, to search for the album or artist you're interested in.
Look for high-quality images (at least 300x300 pixels) to prevent covers from looking grainy or distorted
Step 2. Right click (Ctrl-click on Mac) and select "Save Image As
.. to download the cover to your computer.
It may be helpful to choose a name that is easy to recognize.
Step 3. Visit the Google Play Music website
Step 4. Log into your Google account
Enter your username, your password and click on "Login".
Step 5. Click on "≡" to open the menu
This button is located in the upper left corner of the page.
Step 6. Click on "Library"
This will open the collection of music that you have purchased and uploaded from your computer.
You can only add artwork to songs you've uploaded or purchased. Radio music does not support custom cover art (songs should be accompanied by images provided by Google)
Step 7. Click on the button with the three vertical dots of the album to which you want to add a cover
The options menu for the album or song you have chosen will open.
You can select multiple songs by holding Ctrl (⌘ Cmd on Mac) or ⇧ Shift while clicking on multiple items
Step 8. Select "Edit Information"
A window will open containing the information and tags of the song or album you have chosen.
Step 9. Click on the "Edit" button that appears when you hover the mouse over the space reserved for the cover
A window will open that will allow you to browse your computer's folders in search of the image you previously saved.
If Google is able to identify which artist or album it is and if the necessary information is present on the system's servers, you can click on the "Suggested cover" link to automatically add the image
Step 10. Select a cover and click "Open"
The image will appear in the preview.
Step 11. Click on "Save"
The cover art will be loaded and will be displayed along with the song or album you have selected.
Part 2 of 2: Update the Mobile App to View the Covers You Have Added
Step 1. Open the Google Play Music app
If you are installing the application and need to log in for the first time, the update will not be necessary
Step 2. Press “≡” to open the menu
This button is located in the upper left corner of the page.
Step 3. Press "Settings"
A menu will open with a list of the app and your account settings.
Step 4. Press "Update"
You will find this entry under "Account". After pressing the button, the "Updating…" notification will appear, which will disappear at the end of the operation.
Step 5. Check if there are new covers in your library
Select "Library" from the "≡" menu and all changes made to the web platform should also be present on your mobile device.
