This wikiHow teaches you how to type smiley symbols using the default keyboard of an iPhone, the Google keyboard (Gboard) of an Android device, or the numeric keypad of a normal Windows computer. It also explains how to achieve the same result using a Mac or Chromebook. The Microsoft Office suite of programs is also equipped with a combination of keys to be able to type smileys.
Steps
Method 1 of 7: Using the Numeric Keypad on Windows Systems

Step 1. Click where you want to insert the smiley or special symbol
- If on the keyboard you're using the numeric keypad is not separate but integrated as a secondary function of a set of other keys, press the Fn key or Num Lock to activate that function.
- Although the labels of the numeric keypad keys do not appear as a secondary function of the main keyboard keys, after pressing the key Num Lock they will still work.

Step 2. Hold down the Alt key

Method 2 of 7: Using Unicode Codes on Windows Systems

Step 1. Click where you want to insert the smiley or special symbol
This method works only within programs and applications that support the use of Unicode codes, such as WordPad

Step 2. Enter the code 263a, then press the key combination Alt + X to make the symbol appear

Method 3 of 7: Mac

Step 1. Click where you want to insert the smiley or special symbol

Step 2. Access the Edit menu of the menu bar

Step 3. Choose the Emoji and Symbols… option
A new dialog will appear.

Step 4. Alternatively, you can bring up the same dialog box by using the hotkey combination ⌘ + Control + Spacebar

Step 1. Click where you want to insert the smiley or special symbol

Step 2. Press the hotkey combination Ctrl + ⇧ Shift + U

Step 3. Enter the code 263a, then press the Enter key to make the symbol appear

Step 1. Tap the place in the text where you want to insert the smiley or special symbol

Step 2. Press the keyboard button?
It is located to the left of the space bar and is used to activate the device's Emoji keyboard.
If you've installed multiple keyboards on your iPhone, press and hold the? Key, then select the option Emoji.

Step 4. Now select the smiley or symbol you want to type in the message

Step 1. Tap the place in the text where you want to insert the smiley or special symbol

It is located to the left of the space bar.
- To get the symbol? type the characters:) in the indicated sequence.
- To get the symbol? type the character:, press the ABC key, then type the character D.
