Here you will find instructions on how to remove and install a car engine. You can do it, but know that it is a big job. If you can, let it be done in a workshop, otherwise keep reading.
Steps
Step 1. Position the vehicle where you will be able to keep the lift level
You will need to drain liquids, and lots of light. Take pictures of everything under the hood.
Step 2. Remove the hood
The hinges clip onto the hood. Mark around the hinges with a marker to locate them later. Loosen it very carefully, so as not to scratch when the hood slips. Lift him up by having someone help you if possible.
Step 3. Disconnect the ground wire from the battery
Step 4. Drain the coolant and disconnect the hoses
ATTENTION: cut hoses that do not come off easily: you can replace the rubber but the metal connectors can be damaged and can be difficult to replace.
Step 5. Remove the fan
Loosen the alternator or tension pulley and remove the belts. Remove the radiator.
Step 6. Disconnect the air and fuel intake lines
Step 7. Unscrew and set aside the power steering pump and the air conditioning compressor; do not unclip the pipes
Step 8. Remove all electrical connections from the motor
The spark plug leads can be left for the next steps.
Step 9. Detach the exhaust manifold
Step 10. Unscrew all connections to the transmission
Sometimes it is easier to remove it together with the motor - see below.
Step 11. Lift the machine and place it on stands
Go under.
Step 12. Remove the drain fittings (when you remove the manifolds it should be clear whether or not this is needed)
Remove the starter motor - it is probably not necessary if you also remove the transmission (see above).
Step 13. Unscrew the torque converter from the flex plate
Step 14. Place jacks or anything to support the transmission BEFORE removing any bolts from the transmission
Once removed from the engine there will be nothing holding the transmission, so this step is critical.
Step 15. Loosen the transmission links to the crosshead
Step 16. Unscrew all other connections from the transmission to the engine
Step 17. Unscrew the connection to the motor mount
Step 18. Exit underneath and bring the car back down
Step 19. Bring the lift (don't forget the motor leveler) and hook the chains to the larger screws
Step 20. Lift slowly
Adjust the level to raise the front higher.
Step 21. Remove the engine, making sure that it does not swing into the car
Be careful: you are dealing with a pendulum weighing 100 kg or more.
Step 22. Bring a truck or pickup
Put the old engine on it.
Step 23. Reverse these steps for installation
Step 24. Check for additional instructions:
removing and adjusting the distribution, adjusting the valves, replacing the clutch.
Advice
- Take pictures of the parts.
- Don't tear the pieces.
- Never work on a vehicle without someone supervising you.
- If you really don't know how to remove a car engine, ask for correct and specific advice before trying.
- Whenever possible, refit using new parts.
- Note the location of each removed piece, including the gaskets.
- Replace the parts that wear out such as the main seals (of the crankshaft), the oil pan seals, and the valve cover gaskets when the engine is out and it is easier to work on them. Better to avoid losses that can become a very serious problem.
- Set the removed pieces aside in labeled bags.
- Replace all pipes with new ones and check for worn out electrical wires. Replace them before putting the engine down.
- Use lube if any pieces get stuck.
Warnings
- Always use 2 jacks.
- Use eye protection.
