Here you will find instructions on how to remove and install a car engine. You can do it, but know that it is a big job. If you can, let it be done in a workshop, otherwise keep reading.

Steps

Step 1. Position the vehicle where you will be able to keep the lift level

You will need to drain liquids, and lots of light. Take pictures of everything under the hood.

Step 2. Remove the hood

The hinges clip onto the hood. Mark around the hinges with a marker to locate them later. Loosen it very carefully, so as not to scratch when the hood slips. Lift him up by having someone help you if possible.

Step 12. Remove the drain fittings (when you remove the manifolds it should be clear whether or not this is needed)

Remove the starter motor - it is probably not necessary if you also remove the transmission (see above).

Step 14. Place jacks or anything to support the transmission BEFORE removing any bolts from the transmission

Once removed from the engine there will be nothing holding the transmission, so this step is critical.

Advice

  • Take pictures of the parts.
  • Don't tear the pieces.
  • Never work on a vehicle without someone supervising you.
  • If you really don't know how to remove a car engine, ask for correct and specific advice before trying.
  • Whenever possible, refit using new parts.
  • Note the location of each removed piece, including the gaskets.
  • Replace the parts that wear out such as the main seals (of the crankshaft), the oil pan seals, and the valve cover gaskets when the engine is out and it is easier to work on them. Better to avoid losses that can become a very serious problem.
  • Set the removed pieces aside in labeled bags.
  • Replace all pipes with new ones and check for worn out electrical wires. Replace them before putting the engine down.
  • Use lube if any pieces get stuck.

Warnings

  • Always use 2 jacks.
  • Use eye protection.
