There is no need to spend a fortune to have beautiful, full-bodied hair. Whatever your hair type and length, you can learn how to backcomb it to get that extra volume you've always wanted. Backcombing is a method of adding texture to the roots of the hair, which will then be smoothed over to create an illusion of height. Read on to learn how to do it in a few simple steps.
Steps
Part 1 of 3: Prepare the Hair
Step 1. Wash your hair with a volumizing shampoo
If you are looking to give your hair a lot of body, this step is essential. Purchase a shampoo labeled "volumizing".
- The ones called "purifying" are also a good choice if you are looking for more volume in your hairstyles. These are able to remove all traces of previously used conditioner and natural sebum which both cause flat and heavy hair.
- Don't choose shampoos for dry hair if you want to add volume. These in fact contain emollient agents that make hair heavy and flat.
Step 2. Use a volumizing conditioner
Again, rely on a brand that claims to give your hair volume, rather than crush it. If you wish, do not use conditioner; if the hair is a little drier, it will be easier to keep a bouffant hairstyle.
Step 3. Sprinkle your hair with a volumizing mousse or gel, try to do an even job
Start at the roots and work your way up to the tips. For best results brush them after application, so you are sure to distribute the product evenly.
Step 4. Lean forward and stand upside down to blow dry your hair
This little trick helps create more volume by drying your hair "virtually" without weight.
- Set the blow dryer on a low temperature to avoid damaging your hair.
- Use an accessory called a diffuser to preserve the volume and natural strands of your hair.
Part 2 of 3: Backcomb the Hair
Step 1. Choose a strand to backcomb
Assess which part of the hairstyle needs volume and grab a small strand. Lift your hair straight up and hold it taut so it doesn't slip off.
Many people like to start with the front section of their hair. Giving a little volume to the bangs makes a huge difference
Step 2. Comb your hair backwards
Place the brush or fine-toothed comb halfway between the roots and ends of the strand and with firm strokes, comb the hair towards the scalp. Repeat this movement until a sort of 'cushion' forms at the base of the lock. Fix everything with some hairspray.
At this point the hair will look pretty messy. This is completely normal! If you have done the procedure correctly, it will look like you haven't combed your hair for days. You can smooth the top of the hairstyle and hide the knots later
Step 3. Repeat with the next section
Continue like this until the entire hairstyle has the desired volume. Most people use this technique for the top of the head and sides.
Part 3 of 3: Final Touches
Step 1. Use a comb to smooth out the 'outer layer' of the hair
Place it at the root and gently comb only the top of the hairstyle to hide the teased area. You need to apply enough pressure to even out the hair without flattening it. The hair must be uniform and fluffy while the 'makeup' must not be seen.
Step 2. Finish the hairstyle however you like
If you wish, spray some more hairspray to fix everything.
- The backcombing is used for really fluffy dreadlocks.
- This is also the first step in making a shell hairstyle.
Step 3. Finished
Advice
- For long-lasting volume, use a comb and tease out small strands. For a softer look, use a brush and work on larger locks.
- For best results, avoid putting conditioner on the roots, otherwise the hair will be heavy and it will be more difficult to tease it.
- Grab the strand you are teasing as close to the ends as possible. This prevents the comb from catching too much hair and creating a bunch of knots.
- If you curl your hair, do it before you backcomb it, otherwise you risk flattening it.
- Brush the top layer of your hair to avoid a disheveled or tousled look!
