Mechanical pencils come in different designs (just like multiple pens which can also come with leads), so it's always helpful to keep instructions on how to load them. However, if you have lost them, be aware that the methods for inserting mines are generally standardized, regardless of whether you need to insert a preloaded cartridge or individual pieces of graphite. However, remember that it is always important to choose the correct size lead, so that you can use the writing instrument to the fullest; for this reason, search online for specific instructions for the model of mechanical pencil in your possession.
Steps
Part 1 of 3: Refillable Pencils
Step 1. Replace the cartridge
Specific instructions vary by model, but you typically need to start by pulling out the rubber, which allows you to take out the old cartridge. Lightly shake the latter just to make sure it's really empty. If so, slide the new cartridge into its slot opening. When it clicks properly into place, you can reinsert the rubber after you peel it off the old cartridge.
Step 2. Insert the lead from the top
If your model does not use cartridges, try to peel off the rubber. If under it you find the opening in the body of the pencil, insert the recommended number of leads inside it; when finished, put the rubber back in place.
Step 3. Insert the lead into the tip
If the eraser does not come off or does not close access to the mechanical pencil body, load the pencil from the bottom. First, press the button connected to the eraser and hold the pressure. Insert the first piece of lead into the hole in the tip and gently push it to its full length. Repeat the process with the other pieces, until you have completely filled the mechanical pencil.
Note that some models advance the lead towards the tip by pressing a side button instead of the eraser
Part 2 of 3: Replacing the Lead in the Combo Pens
Step 1. Disassemble the pen
Find the point where the two halves screw into each other and rotate them to separate them. When the pen is open, find the lead housing and release it from the system that holds it in place.
Step 2. Insert the lead into the pen
First, hold the top half upside down, so that the opening of the lead housing faces up; then, thread one piece of lead at a time through the hole in the housing. Remember to enter only the recommended amount - typically no more than two - due to limited space.
Step 3. Mount the pen
Insert the lead release mechanism in place. Screw the two halves of the pen into each other and press the mechanism button a couple of times to make sure it doesn't jam.
Part 3 of 3: Using the Right Materials
Step 1. Check if the mechanical pencil is equipped with a cartridge
Know that these mechanical pencils can be refilled in two ways: with or without a cartridge. The cartridge already contains the leads and can be inserted directly into the pencil as a single piece, while in the models without the cartridge you have to insert the pieces of graphite individually. Check the instructions to know which method you need to follow.
Manufacturers typically code models based on color, so you can recognize them at a glance. The Cross line mechanical pencils, for example, have a black band near the base of the gum when using a cartridge system, while they have a yellow band when they need to be reloaded with single leads
Step 2. Use the right size leads
Inspect the mechanical pencil to see if the recommended diameter is indicated on the outer frame (which is usually expressed in millimeters, for example "0.5mm"). If not, consult the instructions or look at the packaging. Avoid compressing the mechanisms of the pencil with a lead that is too thick or loading it with a piece that is too thin, which could move excessively and get stuck.
Step 3. Do not load the mechanical pencil too much
If you do, the mechanisms could get stuck. Always consult the instructions and find the maximum and minimum number of mines that you can insert into the pencil; some models can only hold two at a time, while others have a capacity of up to nine mines.
Step 4. Seek help if in doubt
If you no longer have the instructions for the pencil, do an online search by consulting the manufacturer's website. Once you find the page of the company that makes the mechanical pencil, look for the exact model you have, find detailed instructions regarding the cartridge, lead size and pencil capacity. Be aware that many companies provide charging instructions.
