Applying lip liner correctly can be a challenge even for those who do daily make-up. The pencil, put in the right way, can extend the life of the lipstick, prevent the color from smudging or fading, further define the lips, emphasize or hide the characteristics of the lips and give a breathtaking look.
Steps
Step 1. Start by experimenting with a lip liner of a similar shade to lipstick
Step 2. Beginners should experiment with more neutral and natural colors that don't highlight mistakes too much
Step 3. Make sure your lips are clean
When applying the pencil, the lips should not be covered with either a lip balm or other oil-based products.
Step 4. Make a dot on the lip contour, in the center of the upper lip
Step 5. Make several stitches on the raised sections of each side of the lips
Step 6. Make 2-3 dots on the contour of the lower lip
Step 7. With your VERY light hand, slowly start connecting the dots without trying to make the lines appear straight
Follow the outline of your lips to the corners of your mouth, but don't apply a heavy line to the sides and don't blend the pencil as you approach.
Step 8. If there are gaps to fill, gently apply more product
Step 9. Use your finger or the tip of a cosmetic sponge to remove the pencil line outside the natural lip contour
Step 10. After you have drawn the outline of the lips, put on a lipstick similar in color to that of the pencil
Step 11. You can use a lip brush to blend both the lipstick and the pencil to avoid too strong a break
Step 12. To simplify application, stretch your lips with your free hand
Step 13. Finished
Advice
- Some lip pencils are creamier than others. Automatic pencils are usually creamier than sharpeners. Try different types to find the one you prefer.
- It is easier to apply the lip liner if it is not too sharp. You can round it by pressing it lightly on a handkerchief.
- Red lip liner is the most difficult to apply. Until you've mastered it correctly, use shades that are similar to your natural lip color to avoid making too many mistakes.
- Lip pencils must match the color of the lipstick. Buy them together if possible.
- Quality is important; if the first time you are unable to apply a pencil correctly, try another brand.
- Go to the perfumery and ask the saleswoman for help in choosing the right products. Don't let it convince you to buy shades that are in fashion right now, especially if they are too strong or light for your lip color. Explain what you are looking for and try different testers.
- There are different methods of applying lip liner. The one just explained is great for getting started.
- If you notice that the pencil lasts longer than the lipstick, try applying the pencil over the lipstick; in this way, they will fade together.
Warnings
- Lip balms, some lip glosses and other ointments can remove the pencil.
- Wooden pencils that become pointed can scratch your lips; temper them often.
- The lip liner will melt when exposed to heat. Treat it as you would with eyeliner or lipstick.
- A pencil applied too intensely gives a sloppy effect.
