If you play softball or baseball, a higher batting speed will improve the distance and quality of your hits. You can improve your batting speed with training, muscle strengthening and technical cleansing. Follow these steps to find out how.
Steps
Step 1. Train
Focus on strengthening the muscles responsible for the strength and speed of your serve.
-
Increase leg strength. Strong legs allow for faster rotation of the abdomen and chest, thereby improving hitting speed. Without a strong muscle base, you won't be able to transfer power from your legs to your abs. Work out the press, do squats and calf raises for strong, healthy legs.
-
Focus on the abdomen. The abdominal muscles help to rotate the body when you turn the club and to continue the movement initiated by the legs. Follow workouts with lower and upper abs and oblique exercises. Hold a medicine ball and perform sit-up sit-ups, crunches and rotations for the obliques to strengthen the abdomen.
-
Get a stronger grip. Hold a tennis, squash, or softball ball in your hand. This will help you strengthen your grip. A stronger grip helps you guide the club into the hitting zone with more precision.
Step 2. Improve your technique
Focus on your technique and eliminate any unnecessary movements that can slow down your serve.
-
Study the technique of professional baseball players who expressed high batting speeds, such as Tony Gwynn, Wade Boggs, or Paul Molitor. Try to replicate their style.
-
Compare your technique with that of the best players. Use a video camera to register. Slow down the speed of the video and take note of the movements that you can improve to emulate professional gamers.
-
Watch instructional videos. Many experienced baseball and softball instructors offer videos and books. Look for educational material on the internet or at a local bookstore or library.
Step 3. Try using clubs of different weights
By using lighter and heavier clubs than you usually use, you can improve your hitting speed.
-
Use a lighter club. With a lighter club you can concentrate on your technique and create the correct muscle memory for the serve.
-
Use a heavier club. Develop a routine where you train with a heavy club while practicing. Spin the heaviest club 20-30 times and then use a regular club. The bat will feel much lighter and your swing will be more powerful.
