The glitter allows you to give that extra touch to any makeup. If you're planning on dressing up as a mermaid for a fancy dress party or have a penchant for all things that sparkle, then glitter is for you. Using glitter specially designed for crafts and manual activities can irritate the skin. To be on the safe side, choose cosmetic glitter, available online and in the most well-stocked make-up shops. Quick and easy, the application process allows you to achieve a flawless result.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Apply the Glitter on the Eyelids
Step 1. Apply make-up first, if you intend to wear make-up
If you plan to apply foundation or eyeshadow, take advantage of it at the beginning of the procedure. Set the base with a powder or spray. Instead, postpone the application of mascara and eyeliner. By creating the base before you start, you will decrease the chances of rubbing the glitter off and ruining your makeup.
Step 2. Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly to the eyelids
Alternatively, apply it on the browbone for a different effect than usual. Don't have petroleum jelly or would you rather avoid using it? Try using a lip balm or clear gloss instead.
- To be daring a little more, apply petroleum jelly in the inner crease of the eye with the help of a cotton swab or a thin brush. Stretch it outward to create a tail or wing.
- If you prefer a more subtle effect, use a thin eyeliner brush to apply false eyelash glue to the upper lashline. However, avoid applying it to the inner rim of the eye.
Step 3. Choose cosmetic glitter that matches the rest of your make-up
You can find them online and in cosmetic stores. Fine glitters are preferable, as they are less prone to peeling and falling off. Do not use glitter designed for manual activities instead.
- For a subtle result, try a neutral color, such as ivory, pearl, peach, or gold.
- For an eye-catching result, try an intense color, such as orange, red, blue, purple, etc.
- If you have applied eyeshadow, choose glitter of a similar color.
Step 4. Dab the glitter on the eyelid with an eyeshadow brush
Dip an eyeshadow brush (preferably with stiff bristles) into the glitter jar. Close your eyes and tilt your head back. Gently pat your eyelid with it, focusing on the area where you applied the petroleum jelly.
If you are going to put glitter on the lash line, take it out and apply it with the help of a moistened cotton swab
Step 5. Complete the makeup and do the finishing touches
Blend and refine the corners or edges, such as the tails, with the help of a cotton swab. If the glitter has gotten to other parts of your face, press a small piece of clear tape over the area where it fell, then peel it off. Swipe on mascara if desired while avoiding eyeliner, otherwise the glitter may peel off.
If you have applied glitter only in the crease of the eye or on the browbone, you can draw a line of eyeliner to make the makeup more sophisticated
Step 6. Avoid rubbing your eyes while using glitter
The glitter may fall off on its own over the course of the day, but avoiding rubbing or touching your eyes will reduce the chances of this happening. If they get into your eyes, remove them with eye drops. You can also rinse them with tap water.
Step 7. Use a low-fat eye makeup remover to remove glitter
Soak a cotton pad, then massage it into your mobile eyelid. If you can't remove all the glitter in one stroke, try again with the clean side of the disc. If there are any glitter left between your lashes, gently lift them using a cotton swab dipped in makeup remover.
Method 2 of 3: Apply Glitter on the Lips
Step 1. Exfoliate your lips to make them even softer if you wish
Moisten them with water first. Then, gently exfoliate them for a few seconds with a soft toothbrush or sugar-based scrub. Rinse them again with water, pat them dry with a towel, and apply lip balm.
This step is not mandatory, but it will make it easier to apply the lipstick and glitter, especially in the case of chapped lips
Step 2. Apply your favorite lipstick
Apply a thin layer of lipstick with a lip brush or directly from the tube. Blot it with a tissue, then take a second pass. Do not dab it after the second stroke: the lips must be moist for the glitter to adhere.
Avoid liquid lipsticks and lip dyes. Go for a creamy lipstick in a tube, otherwise the glitter may not stick
Step 3. Choose cosmetic glitter that matches the color of the lipstick
They can be found in makeup stores and online. Avoid using those specific for chores and manual activities. For a smooth and even effect, use the finest glitter you can find. If they are too large, the end result may be grainy.
If you can't find a color that matches that of the lipstick, try using an iridescent product instead. Also, remember that gold glitter can be paired with warm colors (like red), while silver glitter can be paired with cool colors (like blue)
Step 4. Dab glitter on lips using finger or lipstick brush
Dip your finger or brush in glitter, then tap it firmly onto your lips. Repeat the process until all of them are covered.
If the glitter doesn't stick to your lips, apply petroleum jelly, lip gloss, or clear lip balm, then try again
Step 5. Press your lips together to set the glitter
Do not dab them with a tissue, as is usually recommended to do with a lipstick, or you will remove the glitter. Just press your lips gently for a second or two, then open them again.
Step 6. Blot excess lipstick and glitter with your finger
Put a finger in your mouth, then gently take it out. As you go through this procedure, be sure to pursue your lips. This will remove the glitter that is on the inside of the lips without accidentally removing any that you have applied to the outer surface.
- Peel off the glitter that is outside the lip contour using a piece of duct tape.
- Do not blot your lips with a tissue.
Step 7. Remove glitter at the end of the day using an oil-based makeup remover
Soak a tissue or cotton pad, then rub it on your lips. If you can't get rid of all the glitter in one swipe, use the other side of the pad. Once the glitter is completely removed, you can remove the lipstick with a make-up remover wipe.
Method 3 of 3: Apply Glitter on Cheeks and Forehead
Step 1. Prepare the makeup base
You don't need to make up your lips or eyes for now, but you should apply primer and foundation. If you want to set your makeup with powder or spray, do it now. In fact, if you apply these products after the glitter, you risk making them come off.
For a simpler, fresher result, you can also avoid applying foundation and primer
Step 2. Choose a skin-safe adhesive
Hair gel is an effective and inexpensive product that is recommended for most people, even those with sensitive skin. Alternatively, use an adhesive specifically designed to make the glitter adhere to the skin. Aloe vera gel and petroleum jelly are equally effective.
You can buy special glitter stickers online and in makeup stores
Step 3. Choose colored glitter for cosmetic use
You can use both extra-fine and thick ones, the important thing is that they are intended for cosmetic use. They can be found online and in make-up stores. Avoid glitter for crafts instead. Consider what makeup you will be doing and how you will dress, so you can choose colors that match the overall look.
For a one-of-a-kind result, try getting extra-fine glitter and sequins or body rhinestones. This way you can layer them
Step 4. Apply the adhesive with a makeup brush
Choose one with stiff bristles, such as a lipstick brush. Apply a thin layer of adhesive to the spots where you want the glitter to adhere. If you're going to apply them on both sides of your face, just put them on one side for now.
- It is better to treat a small area at a time than a large area, as the adhesive dries quickly.
- You can make an abstract pattern, such as stripes, or a specific design, such as a heart. You can also use stencils for a more elaborate result.
Step 5. Use the same brush to dab glitter on the adhesive
Dip the brush into the glitter jar, then tap it gently on the adhesive. Repeat this process until you have finished applying glitter to the entire adhesive base.
If you use extra-fine glitter, we recommend applying it with a soft, clean makeup brush instead
Step 6. Apply additional layers of glitter for a multidimensional effect if desired
At this point, you can leave the makeup as it is and go out or add more layers of glitter. Dab some adhesive on the areas where you have already applied glitter using a thin brush - you should create dots. Then, add some sequins for the face or glitter designed for the body.
Step 7. Remove glitter with an oil based makeup remover
Soak a cotton pad, then massage it into the glitter-covered areas. If necessary, use the other side of the disk as well.
Advice
- Glitter for cosmetic use can be found online and in the most well-stocked make-up shops. Do not use those specific for chores and manual activities. Even the finest glitter could irritate the skin if they were not designed for this type of use.
- Remove glitter using a cotton pad dipped in oil-based make-up remover. Do not remove them with water.
- Use lighter colors where light naturally reflects off your face, such as the browbone or cheekbones. Instead, use more intense colors on the lips, eyelids and crease of the eye.
- Don't be afraid to layer your makeup. To create a mermaid look, try applying sequins or sequins to the layer you made with the extra-fine glitter.
- Don't be too daring at first! You can start by applying a handful of glitter to your eyes, then gradually cover your face over the course of a few weeks.
Warnings
- Do not rub your face or eyes after applying the glitter.
- Never apply specific glitter for manual jobs on the face, not even the extra-fine ones.
- Never apply glitter (not even cosmetic ones) in the inner rim of the eye, otherwise you risk getting them in the eye.
