Many women prefer to keep the pubic area hairless and tidy by shaving completely or partially. Whether it's to prevent ingrown hairs, for hygienic reasons or for aesthetic reasons, there are several solutions that allow you to shave safely. To get rid of vaginal hair on your own, try using a depilatory cream or cold wax. Alternatively, if you prefer to go to a beauty center, it is better to resort to hot waxing or laser treatment.
Steps
Method 1 of 5: Shave with the Razor
Step 1. Decide on the areas you want to shave
You don't have to remove all pubic hair. Depending on the type of hair removal, you can only intervene on the bikini area (i.e. the one visible when you are wearing the briefs) or on the entire pubic region. Decide on the solution that best suits your needs - for example, you don't intend to shave your lips or perianal area. Proceed the way you like!
If you want, you can also follow a pattern, such as a triangle or a square
Step 2. Trim your hair before shaving
Don't get too close to the skin, or you may accidentally cut yourself. To see better, use a mirror to direct with your hand and stop when you think you have come too close to the skin. Your goal is to shorten the hair, if it is long, not cut it all the way to the root.
Step 3. Take a 5-10 minute warm shower or bath before shaving
Hot water helps soften the skin and open the hair follicles, improving shaving!
Step 4. Gently exfoliate your skin before shaving to prevent hair from ingrown
Choose a non-aggressive exfoliant, like that of Nivea. Apply it by making small circular motions and scrubbing gently for 30 seconds. Rinse with lukewarm water.
Do not exfoliate and never use the razor in case of cuts or skin reddened by the sun
Step 5. Apply shaving foam or gel
Be careful not to introduce the product into the vagina. Use it only on the outside of the lips and apply it again if necessary. Choose a clear foam or gel so you can see the hair.
- You can also use a nut of conditioner, although you shouldn't get used to it because it doesn't have the same moisturizing action as most shaving products.
- Do not use shower gel or shampoo instead of shaving cream.
Step 6. Use a sharp razor
Consider inserting a new head before shaving in this area. Choose one that you know how to use with dexterity and remember that the bigger it is, the more uncomfortable it will be to handle.
For ease, try using a razor with a moisturizing strip. It will make hair removal easier and smoother
Step 7. Tighten the skin with your hand
The hardest part about shaving in the genital area is that the vagina doesn't offer many smooth, flat surfaces, so you have to create them yourself by gently pulling the skin with your non-dominant hand and passing the razor with the other.
Step 8. Shave in the direction the hair grows
By shaving like this instead of against the grain, you will prevent ingrown hairs from forming. Pass the razor slowly and evenly, without rushing. Rinse it regularly to get rid of hair trapped in the blades and make it easier to shave.
Step 9. Rinse the skin when done
Remove all shaving cream and trimmed hair. If you accidentally injure yourself during hair removal, also wipe off the blood without worrying! It's not bad if you get a little cut. However, see your doctor if it's deeper.
Step 10. Apply baby oil or aloe vera to soothe the skin
Baby oil helps keep it smooth and pimple-free, while aloe vera is more suitable for sensitive skin. Choose one of the two products, spreading a thin layer of it to cover the depilated area. Reapply as needed.
Do not use aftershave or regular moisturizer on your lips, otherwise they could cause irritation and itch terribly
Method 2 of 5: Use the Hair Removal Cream on the Bikini Area
Step 1. Trim the hair before applying the cream
Be careful when using scissors and avoid cutting yourself. If you think they are too close to the skin, stop.
Step 2. Test by smearing some cream on your arm before using it
Before using substances or products that you do not know, it is always better to test in a small, insensitive area. Apply the cream to your arm or thigh to see if it causes excessive redness, pain, or some other negative reaction. In this case, do not use it on the hairs of the genital area!
Wait 24 hours after the test before applying it to your private parts
Step 3. Do not use the cream on sensitive areas
If it hasn't caused any allergic reactions, it means you can safely use it on pubic hair. However, smear it carefully to make sure it doesn't get into your vagina. Use it to remove external hair, avoiding spreading it near the lips.
Step 4. Apply a thin layer with the spatula contained in the package
Spread it out evenly and evenly, being careful not to pile it up. Follow the product instructions and wash your hands after use. Remember not to apply it on the most sensitive areas! Limit yourself to the area outside the vagina for a perfect result.
If it gets inside your lips, rinse it off immediately
Step 5. Wait for the time suggested in the instructions
The processing times vary according to the depilatory cream you have chosen. Program a timer and be prepared to remove it once the indicated minutes have passed.
- Lycia recommends letting it sit for 7-8 minutes.
- Veet recommends leaving it on for 5-10 minutes.
Step 6. Rinse in the shower
Run the water to gently remove the depilatory cream. Use a towel or washcloth to help you. The hairs will fall off automatically. If not, wait 24 hours and try again.
Method 3 of 5: Apply Cold Wax
Step 1. Purchase a home waxing kit
You can buy it on the Internet or in the supermarket in the cosmetics department. On the market there are packs for a single application and those that contain multiple depilatory strips. Keep in mind that each kit is indicated for different areas of the body, so be sure to purchase one for the intimate areas.
A pack with a few pieces costs between 3 and 10 €
Step 2. Shorten the hair to a maximum of 6mm in length
If they are too long, you may have a hard time tearing them or feel pain when pulling them in different directions. If they are too short, the hair removal strips will not have much grip and, as a result, you will not be able to remove them well.
You need to cut only the hair you intend to remove. Decide whether to fully shave or just the bikini area
Step 3. Prevent ingrown hair growth and reduce pain by exfoliating the skin before waxing
Use a body scrub or exfoliating glove to remove the dead cell layer from the surface of the skin before waxing.
Step 4. Hold the hair removal strips in your hands before applying them
Gently rub them so that they warm slightly with your body heat. In this way they will adhere better to the hairs to be plucked. Do not put them in the microwave or in contact with hot water. All you need is the heat given off by your hands.
Step 5. Apply talcum powder to the area to be depilated
It will help you absorb moisture from the skin allowing you to smoothly pull the strips.
Step 6. Keep the skin taut
This operation is especially important with waxing, as it must be torn off. Use your left hand (or right hand if you are left handed) to stretch the skin as much as possible. You should feel a little discomfort, but nothing serious. Don't rush to finish if it's extremely painful.
Step 7. Apply the strip in the direction the hair grows and press
Try to make it adhere well to the skin. Rub it lightly to make sure it has set.
Step 8. Tear off quickly
Don't be afraid of pain. Waxing hurts, but if you pull slowly, the result will not be effective and you will have to try again. Worse, you may feel even more pain. Imagine having to tear off a patch and pull it all at once.
Try to exhale deeply as you pull the strip to distract yourself from the pain
Step 9. Relieve the skin with baby oil or aloe vera
If you have sensitive skin, aloe vera produces a soothing action after cold epilation. Apply a thin layer, but also another if you feel it is necessary. Never use aftershave or regular moisturizer, otherwise it could exacerbate irritation and dehydrate the skin.
Method 4 of 5: Contact an Aesthetic Center
Step 1. Do not shave for 3 weeks
If you shave regularly and intend to use professional hair removal, avoid doing it for 3 weeks so that the hair has time to grow back. If you've never shaved your private parts before, consider trimming your hair. The ideal length for waxing is 5-6mm.
Step 2. Decide what type of wax you want to do
There are two types: the bikini zone (which removes hair on the top and sides of the vagina) and the Brazilian one (which removes all of them). Then, choose the pattern you prefer and the most suitable wax for your skin needs.
If this is your first time, don't start with Brazilian hair removal, as it could be painful. Conversely, soften the impact by removing hair only in the bikini area
Step 3. Go to a reputable beauty center
Do a search among the centers and spas that operate in your area. An easy way to choose it is to call all the centers in your city and ask about the services they offer. Ask how they wax, how they sterilize and clean tools, and what the prices are.
Prices may vary depending on where you live, but are usually between € 15 and € 20
Step 4. Take a pain reliever or anti-inflammatory before shaving
Waxing causes pain, even if it is manageable. So, to prepare yourself, take the pain reliever you usually use. If you have a low pain tolerance, take it even when you have finished the session. Do not exceed the recommended doses before waxing.
Step 5. Don't be embarrassed
If this is your first time going to a beauty salon, you will probably feel uncomfortable or even nervous about undressing in front of someone you don't know. However, there is nothing to worry about! You will be dealing with a professional.
- However, if you feel embarrassed after several sessions, try listening to some music or an audiobook while epilating to distract yourself.
- If the beautician makes you uncomfortable or does something inadequate, leave as soon as possible and report the incident to a person in charge of the center or to the police.
Step 6. Breathe out as the depilatory strip is pulled
Even if the pain is perfectly manageable, waxing will surely cause you some discomfort. Try not to grind your teeth or tighten your muscles, otherwise the situation could get worse. Rather, try to breathe deeply, expelling the air as the strip is pulled.
Seems like waxing is less painful after your period
Step 7. Put on a comfortable piece of underwear and a loose skirt or pair of pants
The skin will be more sore and sensitive after waxing. Be prepared by putting on a pair of cotton briefs and a soft skirt or pants.
Do not wear tight pants or undergarments that are too tight for at least 24 hours after waxing
Step 8. Exfoliate your skin one week after the session
To keep the shaved areas smooth and prevent irritation or ingrown hair, wipe with a loofah after seven days.
Method 5 of 5: Using Laser Treatment
Step 1. Don't consider laser if you have light hair or dark skin
Laser hair removal is most effective on light skin with dark hair. If the latter are too light, the device will not be able to detect the hair follicles. On the other hand, if you have too dark skin, it could confuse it with hair follicles, causing damage or even burns with permanent lesions.
New lasers, such as Nd: YAG, work best on darker skin types, but contact your beauty center to make sure they have this type of technology
Step 2. Calculate a quote for laser hair removal
The average price for a session varies according to the area you want to shave: bikini or Brazilian.
Step 3. Do not use wax for at least 4 weeks before undergoing the laser session
To use this technology it is necessary that the hair follicles remain intact in the subcutaneous areas, while waxing also intervenes in the deeper layers of the dermis. So, avoid shaving for at least a month before the session so that the treatment is more effective.
Step 4. Shave before the session (without using the cream)
For best results, you need to shave all pubic hair the night before. Do not use hair removal cream to remove them, as the chemicals contained within can interact and cause irritation or pain.
Step 5. Don't be embarrassed
You may feel nervous or even slightly wary of undressing in front of another person, but don't worry! The operator who manages the appliance is a professional. If you want to distract yourself from embarrassment, focus on the sound produced by the laser.
If the technician behaves or speaks in an inappropriate manner, end the session as soon as possible and report the incident to a manager of the center or to the police
Step 6. Warn the operator if you find the procedure very painful
Generally, laser hair removal causes a slight tingling sensation. If you feel pain or intense heat, ask the technician to lower the intensity. Do not think that you are not spending your money well: if it pinches, it means that it is working!
Step 7. Don't be surprised when the hair falls out
Laser hair removal does not produce immediately visible results. It takes about 2 weeks for the effects to begin to show and by then the hair will grow normally. After 2-3 weeks they will start to fall off. At this point, you can shave.
Step 8. Prepare to go through all the treatment
Laser technology can take 1 to 10 appointments to remove unwanted hair completely and permanently. On average, the treatment lasts 6 sessions.
Warnings
- Be very careful when shaving or waxing your pubic area during your period, as it can be very sensitive.
- Always use clean tools to avoid contracting or developing diseases. Do not use the razor if it is old or rusty, otherwise you could injure yourself.
