Lavender water is usually used to perfume clothes or household linen. Spray a small amount on almost all types of fabrics before ironing and the scent will last for a few days. You can also use it as a deodorant for rooms and furniture. If you are having trouble sleeping, sprinkle some lavender water on your pillow and it will help you relax during the night.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Using Lavender Flowers
Step 1. Get what you need
Lavender water made from the plant's flowers does not have the same aroma as that made with essential oil. In fact, the essential oil is the distilled and concentrated essence of lavender flowers. When you use the flowers directly, the end result is a light but always very pleasant aroma. Here's what you'll need:
- A bunch of fresh or dried lavender (for a total of 2 tablespoons of buds)
- 1/2 cup of water
- Glass bowl
- Spray bottle
- Funnel
- Very fine mesh strainer.
Step 2. Remove the buds from the stems
Lavender flowers have small buds and straight stems. You don't need the stems to make lavender water; the buds in fact contain the floral aroma. Gently press the stem at the base and run your fingers to the top. The buds will fall into the bowl.
- If you wish, you can purchase dried lavender buds that have already been removed from their stems. You can find them in herbal medicine or natural product stores.
- This is a great way to use lavender plants that might be growing in your garden.
Step 3. Bring the water to a boil
Pour it into a saucepan and turn the heat up to high. Boil the water, being careful not to let it evaporate for too long.
Step 4. Pour the boiling water over the buds
Pour the water carefully over the buds so that they absorb it well and flavor it. The heat will release the oils out of the flower and the water will aromatize with lavender.
Step 5. Cover the bowl and let the flowers soak
Leave the flowers to soak for a few hours or overnight. The procedure is similar to that for making tea. Leave the flowers to soak until the water turns cold.
Step 6. Drain the buds from the water
Place the very fine mesh strainer over a bowl. Pour the water into the colander to drain the buds which you will then throw away as they are no longer fragrant.
Step 7. Pour the water into the spray bottle
Place the funnel over the neck of the spray bottle. Pour the lavender water into the bottle. Now the water is ready to be used on linen, as an air freshener or as a useful tool for aromatherapy.
- If you want your lavender water to last a long time, you can mix it with about 28ml of vodka or witch hazel. Shake the bottle well to mix the ingredients evenly.
- To keep it fresh, you can keep it in the fridge.
Method 2 of 2: Use Lavender Essential Oil
Step 1. Get what you need
Lavender water is very simple to prepare, it only takes a few ingredients. Most can be purchased in craft or health food stores. If you have trouble finding them, search the internet and order them. You will need:
- Lavender essential oil
- Distilled water
- Vodka or witch hazel
- Glass jar with lid
- Spray bottle
- Funnel.
Step 2. Add the ingredients to the glass jar
When preparing lavender water, the most important thing is the proportion of the ingredients. In fact, by using the exact amount of lavender you can be sure that the water smells divinely and not too much. Mix the following ingredients in the glass jar:
- Mix about 85ml of distilled water (you can use tap water if you don't have it).
- 28ml witch hazel or vodka (these ingredients act as preservatives and help lavender oil blend with water).
- 10 drops of lavender essential oil.
Step 3. Shake the jar
Make sure the jar is tightly closed and shake it to get the lavender oil to mix with the water. The witch hazel or vodka will make the ingredients blend evenly.
Step 4. Using a funnel, pour the lavender water into the spray bottle
Place the funnel over the neck of the spray bottle. Carefully pour the lavender water into the spray bottle. If you have any leftover lavender water, keep it in the jar for future use.
Step 5. Use your lavender water
Spray it on your bedding, clothing, or pillow. Lavender water has calming effects and using it is a great way to relieve stress symptoms and freshen the air.
- Lavender water is a great natural way to relieve headaches.
- For an insect repellent effect, spray it on your skin before you go outside.
Advice
- Use it within 6 months of the production date.
