Pubic hair is an annoying problem. First of all, it is unpleasant and embarrassing to ask friends and relatives for advice and opinions on the matter; you certainly can't go to a friend of yours and simply ask "is waxing or razor better?". Secondly, you need to be very careful with this sensitive part of your body, because poor pubic hair management leads to razor burn, ingrown hair, and other unpleasant consequences. Thank goodness this practical guide will reveal how to deal with the annoying pubic hair problem, whether you are a girl or a boy.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Part One: Keep Hair Clean and Trimmed
Step 1. Wash your hair with a mild cleanser
You don't have to wash it like your hair, it takes care and delicacy. Whenever you shower or bathe, use a fragrance-free intimate cleanser to wash your pubic hair. Be gentle, if you pull them it hurts!
- A normal shampoo or shower gel is too aggressive for the sensitive skin of the pubis, so avoid putting it in that area. Use a neutral bar of soap, without dyes or perfumes and use it only for this specific purpose. Do not rub the soap directly on the pubis, lather your hands first, and then wash.
- Be very careful that the soap does not go on or inside the genitals, it could cause irritation and itching. This is especially important for women, as even the mildest soap can break the fragile vaginal pH balance causing inflammation or infection.
Step 2. Keep the hair short
Even if hair removal is not your style, the appearance of pubic hair should be clean and defined. The best way to do this is to cut them! Nail scissors are the most suitable tool for this purpose, even better if they have rounded tips. They allow you precision and maneuverability, reducing the chances of cutting yourself. Make sure you store them in a private place and use them only for pubic hair.
- Don't take large scissors; they are inconvenient (and even dangerous) to use. Small electric razors for nose or ear hair are a good alternative, but make sure they have a spacer on the blades to protect you from injury. Never use an electric razor with rotating heads, it is extremely painful on the pubic area.
- To cut your hair, move it away from your body and cut it slowly, keeping the scissors as close to the skin as possible (or as far as you feel comfortable). If you prefer, you can use a small comb to space the hair away from the skin and then proceed with the cut. You will have to rely more on sensation than sight when cutting, although it is wise to check progress with a mirror at regular intervals.
- Make sure you remove any trimmed hair. Leaving them scattered around the bathroom (especially if it is shared) is not a sign of education and would make a bad impression. If you can, cut them on the toilet bowl, in this way just pull the water to get rid of them.
Method 2 of 3: Part Two: Hair Removal
Step 1. Shave
It is the most common choice, since it is cheap, easy, relatively painless and does not involve the embarrassment of interacting with a beautician. You need a very delicate shaving foam or gel without perfumes (both men and women should use the one dedicated to the female audience, because it is much less aggressive); a specific product for the bikini area and a new razor would be better (worn blades are less effective and cause irritation).
- First of all, shorten the hair you want to shave; you can decide to eliminate only those near the groin area or go all the way and remove them all. Razors work better and cause less irritation if the hairs are short, so trim them to a length of 5-6mm.
- Soften the hair with very hot water by soaking in the tub or taking a shower for 3-5 minutes. Alternatively, apply a warm compress. Spread the cream or gel of your choice, being careful to avoid the genitals. It would be best to do a skin sensitivity test 24 hours in advance, putting a small amount of the product on the skin to check for any allergies.
- Keep the skin taut around the pubic area using your free hand. The razor glides better on the skin under tension. Shave without pressing on the razor (if you have to apply pressure it means that the razor is worn). Moving the razor from the bottom up (against the grain) allows for a smoother and more precise shave, while the opposite direction (according to the growth of the hair) minimizes irritation in people with sensitive skin, as well as the formation of ingrown hairs.
- Once you have removed the hair as you wanted, rinse with warm water to remove the cream residues; pat dry with a clean towel and then apply a soothing lotion to reduce irritation.
Step 2. Try a hair removal cream
These creams are a great alternative for those people who want a “tidy” bikini zone with as little pain as possible.
- Since the chemicals contained in these creams are very aggressive (a proof is the strong smell), it is not recommended to use them to remove all pubic hair, as they could irritate the skin and cause chemical burns. They should only be used to remove excess hair from the line of the slip.
- Before using a depilatory cream, you should shorten the hair you want to remove. This way you will use less; he's wearing an old pair of underwear that you don't care about lotion. Use the line of the briefs as a reference to spread it, avoiding that the cream comes into contact with the most delicate areas of the skin.
- Leave the cream on the groin area for the time indicated on the package. Never exceed the recommended times, as it could be dangerous for your skin. When the time is up, remove the cream with a cloth or wash directly. Any hair you wanted to remove will go away with the cream.
Step 3. Get a wax
It is an effective method and the results last for 2 to 4 weeks. There are many styles of hair removal with wax: you can only depilate the groin, leave only a strip of hair or remove everything with a Brazilian hair removal. These methods are suitable for women, as it is not recommended to wax the delicate skin of the testicles.
- Waxing is done by applying hot, sticky wax to the area to be depilated. A strip of cloth is placed on top of the wax and then pulled off with a firm movement, removing the hair along with the wax.
- Since the hairs are removed from the root, it will take much longer to grow back than other hair removal techniques, such as shaving, which only remove the part of the hair that protrudes from the skin. However, waxing is expensive, despite the long duration of its results.
- There are kits for waxing at home, but if you have never used them, we recommend that you contact a professional beautician to shave the pubis. Know that waxing is painful, especially in sensitive areas, even if repeated waxing leads to a reduction in hair growth and therefore pain.
Step 4. Evaluate laser hair removal and electrolysis
These are two treatments that allow the permanent elimination or reduction of hair. Electrolysis is the only procedure that completely eliminates pubic hair for good. The method consists of passing electric current through the hair to the hair pore, burning the root and preventing regrowth.
- You only need one treatment (although it could take up to 12 hours depending on the amount of hair to be removed) and you won't have to worry anymore! However, it is important to know that electrolysis is quite painful (not like waxing) and expensive.
- Laser removal is a new technique and guarantees permanent hair reduction. The technique involves striking the pigmented hair follicles with pulsed light, thereby stopping hair growth. It is relatively painless and takes a couple of minutes, albeit in several sessions.
- Although the laser is effective in reducing hair growth, it does not guarantee that it will remove all hair and other hair removal techniques may be required. As it affects pigmented pores, it doesn't work on very light hair. Laser treatment is very expensive.
Step 5. Consider the possibility of a natural look
The decision to remove pubic hair is a personal one. So even if the current trend is "all naked", you shouldn't feel compelled to shave completely if you're not comfortable.
- As long as you keep the area clean, there is no hygienic reason to shave the pubis. Most people do it for aesthetic reasons.
- It is important to know that there are many men and women who choose a "natural" style and let their hair grow freely. So, whatever you decide to do, know it's normal!
Method 3 of 3: Part Three: Dealing with Other Problems
Step 1. Soothe the irritation
Irritations are a price to pay when you shave your pubis; no matter what technique you use, you will eventually have to face the problem. To minimize this annoyance, you can:
- Do an exfoliating treatment with a gentle sugar scrub. It is used to remove dead cells and allows the skin to breathe. If you don't have the sugar scrub you can just make a paste with water and baking soda, it will work just as well.
- Moisturize your skin with a gentle, fragrance-free lotion. Baby lotions and oils also contain aloe vera, which is famous for soothing the skin.
- Wear loose, soft clothing. The skin needs more air to heal, so wearing tight leather pants after a groin wax or after shaving is not a great idea. Wear cotton underwear and loose skirts or pants for a day or two after shaving.
Step 2. How to deal with ingrown hairs?
They are painful and can even become infected if left to fend for themselves. They usually appear during the regrowth phase, after waxing or shaving. If you have ingrown hairs you need to remove them like this:
- Take a hot shower or bath to soften your skin and open pores. Pat the area dry with a clean towel. Take some sterilized tweezers, apply pressure to both sides of the hair and pull it off.
- Put a topical astringent on the area and let it dry. Then put on some cotton underwear. Continue to apply the astringent for a couple of days, until complete healing.
Step 3. Dye your pubic hair
If you have prematurely sprouted gray hair, don't panic. Although not recommended by doctors, it is possible to dye pubic hair at home using hair dye. However it is very important that you follow the instructions and safety precautions, to make sure that the dye does not come into contact with the genitals.
- Choose a color that is as close to your natural color as possible. Pubic hair is usually darker than hair, so pay attention to this detail. Regrowth retouching kits are great for this, as they provide enough color and a small brush for targeted application.
- Before dyeing your hair, do a test to make sure you are not allergic to the product. Apply petroleum jelly to sensitive parts of the genitals where you don't want the color to go.
- Apply the color carefully, as explained on the package, and leave it on for the minimum time necessary. Wash off the color gently but thoroughly with warm water. Use a sponge or cloth to wipe off the petroleum jelly.
