Tomatoes are the sweet and delicious fruit of a very hardy plant. Tomato plants are so popular because they are easy to grow, and those grown at home taste better and better. In addition, they are great for those gardeners who have little space available. This article tells you how to grow tomatoes suspended from the ceiling or in a hanging basket.
Steps
Step 1. Find a place to attach the hook
Choose a sunny spot in the house. The plant can be hung on a hook on the ceiling or tied around a beam; find the method that works best for the space you have available.
If you want to use a basket to cover the bottle, use a string or string and tie the basket to make hooks to attach it to the hook or around the beam. Attach the basket to the ceiling or beam so you can put the floor plan in it. When looking for the basket, choose one that can hold a milk or juice bottle upside down, without it slipping out or to the side. Make sure you check this before hanging the basket! This step is nicer, but optional, as you can use the bottle directly (see below)
Step 2. Choose a small tomato plant
Those bought or grown from seeds are both good choices. Water the plant well and set it aside.
Step 3. Take a large plastic milk container or juice bottle, clean it, and cut off the base
Remove the lid. See the image for more details.
Tie the string or twine to the edges of the cut end of the bottle for hanging. Punch holes with a hole punch or use a sharp tool to thread the string through the holes. Knot it with loops to attach it to the hooks you have prepared. Although the image you will see later in this article shows two holes, you can also make three to ensure a better balance; try to see which solution works best
Step 4. Remove the tomato plant from its original pot
Gently put it upside down in the milk or juice bottle. Pass it carefully through the neck of the bottle so that the leaves are down and the roots inside the bottle.
Step 5. Fill the bottle with a mixture of good compost and garden soil
Then water. At this point you will have understood why the hook was placed first: it is impossible to put the plant on a surface without covering it with soil or damaging it. If you use a basket, place the bottle in the hanging basket, or hang the bottle directly on the hooks. You are now ready to start growing your upside down tomato plant.
Step 6. Water it regularly
The easiest way to get it wet is to buy a watering can with a hooked hose that sucks in the water and sends it to the top of the container; simply hold the bottle, slide the hook onto the top of the container and squeeze the water into it. You can find this article in garden or home improvement stores.
- Be aware that water may drip out of the bottle neck; this particular tends to gradually reduce the development of the roots.
- Try putting another plant under the hanging one to catch excess water, or put a container underneath to catch the water and use it to water the plant itself. Another option is to hang it where any falling drops do not cause problems, such as on the balcony.
Step 7. Finished
Advice
- Make sure the plant is well exposed to the sun, as this is the key to getting dark, ripe tomatoes.
- Make sure the hook or beam is secure, as the plant can get quite heavy when it begins to bear fruit.
- The plant grows downward, so hang it where it doesn't get in the way, neither for you nor for pets, or whatever. Certainly don't hang it over an aquarium or in front of the TV!
- To fit a hanging basket, drill a hole in the bottom of the basket lining and follow the method described above. Similarly, you can grow tomatoes as in the hanging basket by cutting the bottom of a bottle and growing the plant normally with the leaves growing upwards.
