Fed up with your boring old bedroom? Your bedroom should be your sanctuary. A place where you can escape from all the tragedies of life. If it doesn't fit this description, then it's time to renew it.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Part 1: Plan
Step 1. Clean the chamber
It is easier to imagine a new room without clutter.
Step 2. Make a plan of your future room before starting
Without planning, there will be more obstacles, unsolvable for even the best interior decorator.
Step 3. Imagine what the color scheme will be
Try not to choose based on your favorite colors of the moment, because you will probably not like them anymore in the future. Go for shades you've always liked.
- Use the color wheel as a reference point. The colors placed side by side on the wheel match each other, while those in direct contrast contrast. In other words, when paired, they really stand out and are more noticeable. A great trick for using colors correctly is the 60-30-10 rule. Even professional interior designers use it! This rule indicates to use the main color in 60% of the room, the secondary one in 30%, while it is advisable to use a third color, hinting it only in 10% of the room. In this way, the colors are divided evenly, without exaggerating with too many color variations.
- Take the theme of the room into consideration when choosing colors. You don't need to have a specific theme, like the 1980s or baseball. Just think about the type of room you want. If you prefer a room with a dreamy and romantic atmosphere, paint the walls a baby blue and enrich it with lots of white decorations. But, if you are going to convey a feeling of eccentricity, use bright and intense colors in contrast, such as orange, lime green and electric blue.
- For inspiration, consider the object of your choice in the room. You could base the whole room on that single thing. For example, if you love your green and black lava lamp, then you could paint your walls green, with black accents, or have a seventies-style theme. Again, don't choose something you like right now, as you may change your tastes and get tired of it in a few months; use something you've always liked.
- Decide on the colors of the walls. Make sure you determine what color the wall will be with the window, and so on.
- Be flexible in your choice of colors. When you go to the paint and paint shop, you may change your mind about the color scheme to adopt.
- Take the furniture into account when choosing the color. If the furniture is extremely dull and boring, you should stay away from those shades, but also from those that are too bright.
- Try to highlight, by creating areas that are more colorful than others, or by painting only a small part of the room, such as the window sills, a very bright color, leaving a simple base color, such as gray. The colors will emerge and highlight the walls.
Step 4. Measure the length and width of your room with a tape measure
Measure the furniture you intend to place in the new room. Suppose the room is 2x2 meters. Cut a piece of paper so that it measures 20x20 centimeters and do the same with the furniture. Define each piece of paper with the appropriate name, such as the bed, desk, chest of drawers. Now you can arrange the furniture in the room until everything is in its ideal spot.
Step 5. Consider the floor
Do you prefer carpet, parquet or tiles? If you don't like the floor, you can change the color or material if you can afford it. If you like rugs, you can roll them out in different colors and shapes instead of modifying the whole floor.
Step 6. Think about the atmosphere you want to create, that is the feeling you want your room to communicate
This is very important to create a room that reflects you as much as possible. If you want it to be cozy, for example, just try to cover the lights to dim the lighting, hang fabrics from the ceiling creating drapes and use small lamps instead of ceiling ones, for more subdued lighting. For a darker, "sinister" room, put on some appropriate music and turn up the volume or leave everything in a mess. Try to use colors that are on the darker end of the spectrum. Colors, materials, lights and music play a huge role in the atmosphere of your room.
Method 2 of 3: Part 2: Painting
Step 1. Go to the nearest hardware store and get everything you need
- Primer. If your walls have already been painted but you want to re-paint them, be sure to buy the primer, which, in essence, is a product that prepares the walls for painting and ensures that the previous color does not show.
- Painting. Look at the paint swatches and combine all the colors you choose to see if they match each other well. Remember that you can very easily change your mind about the color scheme until you start shopping. After all, as you progress through each step, it is more difficult to go back to your own steps.
Step 2. Clean the room as much as possible
To make things easier for you, move all the main items, such as the bed and desk, to the center of the room, away from the walls, and stack all the things you can on the bed. Put everything else out of the room.
Step 3. Cover the floors with newspaper, plastic, cardboard, etc
so as not to stain the carpet or tiles with paint.
Step 4. Paint the walls carefully
First, use the roller to paint the large empty areas. Then, paint the ends, corners and edges of the walls with a brush. You can create a wall that stands out with an accent of color by opting for a polka dot or striped pattern. Be creative!
Method 3 of 3: Part 3: Finishing
Step 1. Go to your favorite furniture store for furniture and accessories
Remember that you don't have to buy expensive things. Try to get a good deal at IKEA and the flea markets. You can also find great bargains at second-hand sales if you study them carefully.
Step 2. Choose the furniture
In case your room doesn't have chairs or other comfy items besides the bed, consider buying something you can stretch out on and relax on. You can use a beanbag, stools, recliners, S-shaped sofas or a large sofa to have a place where relaxation is king. You don't have to spend too much in this case either. If your budget is really tight, you can just pick up lots of pillows in one corner.
Step 3. Look for decorations
Find lamps, paintings or flowers that fit the chosen theme. A great way to arrange flowers are old Coke glass bottles, which you can dye in different colors and use as vases. If you need to add paintings, be sure not to overdo it. Go for minimalism!
Step 4. Stock up on containers
It is very important to have pieces of furniture in which to store your things, otherwise everything will end up on the ground. I can be bookcases, dressers and even cardboard boxes, which you can cover with wrapping paper in the same color as the walls to make them more beautiful. If you don't want to keep the containers of your things in sight, then buy large plastic boxes that are not too tall. Once filled, you can place them under the bed.
Be careful not to get lazy: filling the wardrobe or the boxes to put under the bed will make it impossible to find what you need. If you decide to use the space under the bed to keep your stuff, make sure you have enough containers to organize it. All the cabinets, drawers, dressers, shelves, boxes and plastic containers can be used to arrange your things. IKEA offers many interesting solutions for storing objects, even if you will have to assemble the furniture yourself
