An acid wash can help if you find yourself with a pool that looks like a swamp or if you just want to make it new. This technique is especially used when the pool is not properly prepared for winter or the algae have taken over due to poor maintenance or disuse. Washing with acid also eliminates the surface layer of plaster, so it is advisable not to abuse it. However, doing this once in a while can be a good idea!

Step 1. Empty the pool completely

As you go, clean up any residue or debris as well. If your pool has an automatic top-up system, make sure it is turned off before you begin. When the pool is completely empty, you can start cleaning.

Step 7. Neutralize the pool after washing it completely

The process generates a puddle of foam on the bottom that must be removed before it damages the plaster.

  • Add some soda ash to the acid pool and use the scrub brush. You will need about 1 kg of carbonate for 4 l of acid.
  • Vacuum the mixture into a bowl with an immersion pump.
  • Properly dispose of the fluid you aspirated as it is toxic to animals and plants. Rinse the bowl.
  • Pour some water over the residue and rinse the drain thoroughly.

Advice

  • If you do not see any results after the first attempt, you may need to increase the acid / water ratio, rub more vigorously or extend the time it takes for the solution to settle on the walls. It may even take a couple of cleanings before you get clean walls.
  • If you get acid in your mouth or eyes, wash the area with the water hose for 15 minutes. If acid has come into contact with your skin, wash it immediately for 30 seconds.

Warnings

  • If you don't rinse off the acid completely, it will continue to corrode the plaster. Be careful that it does not flow to the deepest part of the pool as it will leave a trail of corrosion.
  • Acid scrubbing should never be done in vinyl-lined pools. For this type of material, specific detergents and softeners must be used.
  • Be careful when working with acid. Wear appropriate clothing, handle containers safely even inside your vehicle, and rinse the pool thoroughly when finished. Don't work alone, make sure there is at least one other person.
