Do you want to make a hat with a newspaper? Do you want a fun, affordable and recyclable alternative to party hats? These headdresses are lightweight and customizable. They are also a great DIY project. There are many different designs, including pirate, bishop and cone hats.

Steps

Method 1 of 4: Prepare Your Station

Step 1. Choose a flat surface

When you start folding the newspaper, the creases will need to be neat and clean. If you build the paper hair on a non-flat surface or in the air you will get a more messy hat.

Step 2. Get half a sheet of newspaper

The size will vary according to the format of the newspaper you are using. Many use the 28 x 43 cm format.

Step 3. Find some duct tape

It's optional, because almost all methods of making paper hats use pleats to hold the headpiece together. If you are in a hurry or want to make a sturdy hat, use duct tape.

Step 4. Get the possible accessories

When you are done with the hat, you can decorate it however you like. Paint it. Color it with markers. Use stickers. Use feathers to give it more style. Unleash your creativity.

If you're making hats for a birthday party, you could easily make a DIY station. Write each child's name on a hat in large, colorful letters. Let them color their names and customize the hats however they like

Method 2 of 4: Make a Cone Paper Hat

Step 1. Put a sheet of paper on a table

This is the simplest method.

Step 2. Take the top right corner of the paper and bring it to the left side

You can fold the sheet or not. If you make a fold, the sheet will not have a perfectly conical shape.

Step 3. Use tape to secure the inside of the newly created cone

A single piece of tape on the edge of the cone should suffice, but you can decide to stick all the part where the edges meet.

Step 4. Cut off the excess paper

After using the tape to secure the edges, there will be an excess paper triangle. Cut it out.

Step 5. Decorate the hat according to your theme

Try adding tassels, cords or lace on the hat to make it a real princess hat. If you prefer a witch's hat instead, cut a circle from cardboard. Cut out a smaller circle inside it and slide it along the cone hat. Cut it to the size you prefer. If you want a birthday cone hat instead, add some cotton balls on top. Paint the sides with bright colors. Cut out some cardstock. Cut a long strip that reaches down to the base of the hat. Make small cuts along all sides to add texture. Then glue the base

Method 3 of 4: Making a Pirate Hat

Step 1. Get a sheet of newspaper

Place it in front of you with the short side facing you.

Step 2. Fold the paper vertically

Take the top of the paper and fold it towards you, making two equal halves.

Many art teachers call this "hamburger" fold, because the paper will take on that shape after folding it

Step 3. Make a new horizontal fold

Bring the right corner of the paper to the left corner. Then create the crease. Make sure it's clean. This line will be very important in the next step.

Step 4. Unfold the sheet

You should notice a central crease from the previous steps.

Step 5. Fold the top corners to the center line

Take the right corner and fold it, making sure to follow the fold you just made. Then do the same with the left corner. Fold it, making sure to follow the fold you just made. Check that the two folds are identical.

Step 6. Fold up one of the bottom tabs

Step 7. Turn the paper over and fold the other tab up

If you want to make the hat fit larger or smaller heads, fold both sides of the hat inward about 2.5cm (depending on the size you want), before folding the bottom flap up

Step 8. Open the bottom of the hat

You now have your hat. Wear it however you like. Put it flat side forward for a pirate look. Place it with the flat side to the side of the head for a gourmet hat.

If you want to make the hat more secure, you can use masking tape to secure the two sides you just folded

Step 9. Add some fun decorations

Use feathers, newspaper clippings, markers, or any other material available.

Method 4 of 4: Create a Bishop's Hat

Step 1. Put half a sheet of newspaper on the table

Keep the short side facing you.

Step 2. Fold the paper in half

Take the top right corner and fold it in half. Make sure you create a sharp crease in the sheet.

Step 3. Open the sheet

Turn it with the long side facing you. You should see a nice, sharp line down the center of the page.

Step 4. Fold the top corners up to the center line

Take the right corner and fold it, making sure to follow the fold you just made with the edge of the paper. Then do the same with the left corner. Fold it, making sure to follow the fold you just made with the edge of the paper. Check that the two folds are identical.

Step 5. Fold up one of the bottom tabs

Step 6. Turn the paper over and fold the other tab up

You should now only see a large triangle.

Step 7. Fold the paper in half

Make sure the tip is at the top before folding. Take the bottom right side and fold it to the left. Create a clean crease in the center.

Step 8. Unfold in previous position

You should now notice a vertical crease in the center of the paper.

Step 9. Take both bottom corners and fold them in the center, aligning them with the previous crease

Step 10. Use masking tape to secure both corners together

Step 11. Open the bottom of the hat

You now have your hat.

Decorate it according to your preferences. Try coloring the different parts of the hat with paints, markers, or crayons. Glue some fabrics on the sides

Advice

  • Find some twine or thread. If you want children not to lose their hats while they play, you can add a chin strap to the hat. You will need to drill two holes in the sides of the headpiece, thread the thread through both and tie a knot at each end to secure it. Adjust the length as needed.
  • Keep the folds even. Fold carefully. Repeated creases weaken the structure of the hat.
