Plastic is one of the most commonly used compounds. Made of polymers, very long molecules linked together, the commonly used plastic is a derivative of petroleum. In this article you will find that there is another way to make plastic, try making it yourself!
Ingrediants
- 240 ml of whole milk (or cream, the higher the fat level the better the result)
- Vinegar (or Lemon Juice)
Steps
Step 1. Heat the milk in the saucepan and bring it to a light boil
DO NOT let it boil firmly.
Step 2. Gradually add the vinegar, a few tablespoons at a time, stir until the milk begins to separate into a liquid and a solid part
Step 3. Remove the pot from the heat
Step 4. When the mixture has cooled enough to handle, drain it
The soft, rubbery substance left in the colander is your plastic. By heating the milk and adding the vinegar, you started a chemical reaction that extracted the natural polymers contained in the milk, creating a natural plastic.
Step 5. Find out how your plastic reacts to pressure by pinching, pulling or dropping
If you stop working it or put it back in the freezer it will harden.
Warnings
- Always be cautious when using the stove!
- The plastic may have a slight vinegar smell.
