Clay pots are durable, inexpensive and available in a wide range of formats and sizes. However, traditional pots all look the same and can get a little dull. To make them more eye-catching, try painting them using your favorite colors! They will not only give a touch of liveliness to the environment, but will enhance the beauty of the plants. This is how terracotta pots are painted!
Steps
Step 1. Cover your work surface to protect it
Use a plastic sheet, a few sheets of newspaper, or an old tarpaulin.
Step 2. Scrub the new clay pot well
Use a stiff bristled brush to smooth it out and remove blemishes. Alternatively, smooth the surface using sandpaper very gently.
Step 3. Clean the vase with a damp cotton cloth
It is used to remove dust and dirt. Let it dry well before painting it.
Step 4. Seal the inside of the jar
Spray 2 or 3 coats of clear acrylic spray paint. In this way, when you have placed the plant in the pot, the humidity will not be able to penetrate into the terracotta.
Step 5. Let the paint dry before proceeding to the next step
Step 6. Use a primer for the first layer
Step 7. Start painting the outside of the vase
Apply a light coat of glossy spray polish. Also color the first 5 centimeters inside the vase. There is no need to paint the whole interior because it will be covered with earth.
Step 8. Let it dry thoroughly, then apply a second coat of paint
Wait for it to dry completely before applying the third and final layer.
Step 9. Add some drawings
Wet a sponge with glossy paint, choosing a color that contrasts with the background. For convenience, cut the sponge according to the shape you want to obtain (squares, stars, circles, etc.) or simply use it to dab the surface of the vase. Cut it into strips if you want to paint horizontal or vertical lines on the vase.
Step 10. Seal the jar with a coat of clear acrylic spray paint
It serves to protect the surface from scratches, making it more resistant and easier to clean.
Step 11. Wait for it to dry completely, then apply a second coat
Step 12. Leave the pot to dry for 2 to 3 days before placing the plant inside
Advice
- If you prefer, apply the glossy lacquer layer with a sponge.
- You can also paint old clay pots. Before rubbing or smoothing them with sandpaper, it is best to soak them in hot water for about an hour. If the pot is very dirty, add a little bleach. Rinse thoroughly and make sure the pot is completely dry before you start painting it.
Warnings
- Never paint the bottom of the pot because the drain hole must remain free. Without sufficient drainage the plants could rot.
- Work in a ventilated area, especially if you use spray and insulating paints.
