Titanium is a very light metal known for its hardness, longevity and corrosion resistance. It was also a very popular alternative to gold and other precious metals for wedding rings. Titanium is widely used for medical instrumentation, cellphone, sports equipment, eyewear and auto parts. It has no magnetic characteristics and is commonly found in nature on the earth's crust. Titanium, like any other metal, also scratches and wears due to daily use. After some time it loses its satin patina. However, you can polish it to bring it back to its ancient splendor.
Steps
Step 1. Clean the metal
Wash it with a mild liquid dish soap and warm water. Form a thick lather and use it to scrub the surface to remove all traces of dirt, grease and grime. Rinse with plenty of warm water and dry it with a clean cloth.
Step 2. Spray it with window cleaner
Wet it completely with an ammonia-based product and rub it with a dry cloth or kitchen paper.
Step 3. Rinse the titanium
Immerse it completely in warm water to remove all traces of the glass cleaner. When it is well rinsed, remove it from the water and dry it with a cloth.
Step 4. Remove shallower scratches
Rub a polishing cream over the scratched area with the help of a soft cloth. When the entire piece is covered with product and the scratched area has been treated, wash it again with warm water and dish soap. Rinse it well and always dry it with a clean cloth.
Step 5. Increase its metallic brilliance
To make it really shiny, dip a cloth in the vinegar. If you don't have vinegar available, sparkling water will also be fine. Rub the vinegar or sparkling water on the surface of the metal and let it dry.
Step 6. Rub some oil
If you want a very glossy finish, rub a small amount of baby (or olive) oil on the titanium. Don't overdo it, though, or it will be greasy to the touch and slippery. Polish everything with a clean, dry cloth. Wait until the piece is dry and has absorbed the oil before using it.
Advice
- Always protect titanium and avoid activities that could scratch, hit or generate abrasions. If titanium is a ring, don't wear it when gardening, playing sports, exercising or swimming.
- Regularly cleaning and polishing the metal will form a clean and smooth patina on the surface.
