Rolling up a sleeping bag is an essential skill for a camper. If you want to pack up your sleeping bag to put it in its little pouch or just want to keep it clean and make it easier to transport, read on to make it easy.
Steps
Step 1. Place the sleeping bag on the floor or ground
It is much easier to roll it off the ground than it is from an elevated surface, but if the ground is wet, you can do it on a higher surface.
Step 2. Fold the sleeping bag in half
Fold it in half along the vertical axis or in three parts.
Step 3. Start rolling from the bottom, where there is the hole to enter
This is the final part, the one with the hood, if the sleeping bag has one.
Step 4. Grab the bag firmly and start rolling it up
Step 5. Wrap it very tightly
Each time you roll it, tuck the fabric in well but not in the middle.
Step 6. When finished, follow one of these methods:
- If the sleeping bag has straps at the end, secure them securely towards the center spaced approximately 7.5 cm apart.
- If it doesn't, get a string and tie it tightly around the center area. A square knot might be a good solution.
- Slip the rolled-up bag into its small pouch (many sleeping bags come with this, to make it easier to transport inside backpacks, etc.).
Step 7. Put everything back in the backpack
You are now ready to hit the road!
Advice
- While rolling up the sleeping bag will help keep it clean, be sure to wash it regularly to remove sweat, dirt and soil. Synthetic bags can be washed in the washing machine while those stuffed with down must be taken to the dry cleaners or cleaned with a special detergent.
- When storing the sleeping bag, you can decide whether to leave it in its bag or hang it lying in the closet so as not to damage its softness.
