There are numerous techniques for creating beautiful flowers with ribbon. Most include a combination of folds, criss-crosses and cuts and are held together by sewing them, while others can be held together with glue or staples. If you are interested in making ribbon flowers, here are some ways to get started.
Steps
Method 1 of 4: Method 1: Grouped Ribbon Flower
Step 1. Cut a piece of ribbon
Work with tape between 2, 5 and 5 cm wide, and cut a length of about 30 cm.
Step 2. Thread a needle with thread into one side of the ribbon
Start at an angle in the ribbon and work the entire length of the ribbon, weaving the needle in and out of the ribbon in a straight stitch along the edge.
Use thick thread or double sewing thread to make it stronger. The thread will serve to support the entire weight of the tape and will also have to withstand the pressure of being pulled and tugged at a later stage
Step 3. Gently bundle the ribbon on the wire
After you are done weaving the yarn all over the ribbon, hold it tight at the end. Use your hand to gently push the tape towards the starting end, causing it to swell by rolling up.
You can pull at this point leaving some slack, but it will need to be tight enough to give you an idea of what the ribbon will look like once it is perfectly grouped
Step 4. Cut the thread
Cut the thread leaving about 12 cm to work with.
If the tape isn't tight enough, now is the time to do it. Push the ribbon over the thread as far down as possible, using your index finger and thumb to tighten the thread just before the end of the ribbon if it threatens to loosen and slip off the thread
Step 5. Knot the thread and glue the ends of the ribbon together
Tie a double knot at the end of the thread, just in front of the ribbon, to keep it tight in place. Use fabric glue or hot glue to glue the two free corners of the ribbon.
Make sure that the glued parts are pointing down, towards the underside of the flower, so that they are not seen from above
Step 6. Flatten the flower
Use your fingers to gently press the ribbon and create a flatter “bloom”.
Note that a hole could be made in the center of the flower. This hole is absolutely normal
Step 7. Glue a decoration in the center if you wish
Use DIY glue or hot glue to glue a decorative button, gem, brooch, or other decoration to the center of the flower.
- There may be a hole in the center of the flower once the decoration is added. This is normal, but it does not mean that you should choose a decoration that is larger than the hole.
- It might be a good idea to use something to close the hole from behind if the hole is too large to prevent the decoration from falling off. The idea is essentially to make a sandwich with the ribbon in the middle between the back and the central decoration. Often, however, the back can simply be a second button glued behind the first.
Method 2 of 4: Second Method: Ring Ribbon Flower
Step 1. Cut three pieces of ribbon
Each piece should be about 2cm wide and 18cm long.
Try to consider using grosgrain ribbon for this project. The grosgrain ribbon has a pleated appearance and is very strong and easy to shape into different shapes
Step 2. Seal the ends with heat
To prevent the tips from fraying, you should apply some heat to the edge. Run the tape over a small flame until it begins to melt, but don't put the tape all the way over the flame.
- Use a small flame, such as a candle or lighter.
- Be careful as you work to avoid causing the tape to catch fire. It might be a good idea to keep a glass of water nearby so that if the tape starts to smoke or catches fire you can immediately immerse it in water.
Step 3. Form a loop with a piece of ribbon
Place a drop of hot glue on the outside of one end of a piece of tape. Roll the rest of the ribbon around to form a loop and gently press the inside of the other end onto the glue.
-
Repeat this step with the other two pieces of ribbon to form a total of three loops.
Step 4. Twist the ring in the shape of 8
Use your fingers to twist a loop of ribbon so that it crosses in the center, forming an 8. Add a drop of hot glue at the intersection to hold the ribbon in place.
-
Repeat this step with the other two rings so that you get three 8-shaped figures.
Step 5. Overlap two of the rings
Place them on top of each other in a narrow "X", with less space between the tops and bottoms than between the sides. Hold it in place with some hot glue.
-
There should be enough space for the third ring to fit between the sides of the "X". If you wish, you can place the three rings to get an idea of what it will look like, before gluing everything together.
Step 6. Add the last twisted loop
Put the third ring horizontally over the "X" created by the first two rings. The large ring-shaped ends should fill the open spaces on the sides of the "X". Add another drop of glue to hold it in place.
Step 7. Glue a decoration in the center if you wish
You can sew or glue a button in the center of the flower, or you can also attach a small brooch, gem or fabric flower to it. The choice is yours, feel free to be creative.
Method 3 of 4: Third Method: Simple Ribbon Tulip
Step 1. Cut two strips of tape
One strip should be approximately 45cm long and the other approximately 15cm. Both should be approximately 5cm wide.
-
The longest piece of ribbon will become the "petals" of the tulip, so use a color such as pink, red, yellow, purple or white. Alternatively, choose a ribbon with a nice pattern.
-
The shorter piece of ribbon will become the tulip "leaves", so green ribbon would be ideal.
Step 2. Accordion fold the long piece to create three loops
With the ribbon placed horizontally in front of you, the first fold should be on your right, the second on your left, and the third on the right again. Continue folding like this until you have formed three distinct loops.
-
Each ring should be between 6 and 7.5 cm long.
-
If you have some ribbon left over, you can cut or fold it up by crossing it over the other side of the ribbon.
-
Squeeze the folded ribbon at the bottom as you work to form the bottom tip.
Step 3. Fold the short green ribbon around the first folded ribbon
Center the green ribbon under the bottom tip of the three loops in your “petal” ribbon. Fold one end up and inward to form a loop that closes on the same end. Repeat on the other side.
-
When you are done, you should have two small green rings closing the three large petal rings.
-
Each green ring should be approximately 3.8cm long.
Step 4. Staple or stitch the tulip together at the base
A stapler is the easiest way to hold the tulip together. Staple through all layers of tape near the base to prevent it from breaking or losing its shape.
-
If possible, use green paper clips so that they hide on the green ribbon.
-
Alternatively, you can simply pin the ribbon together and sew the bottom with needle and green thread.
-
This step completes the ribbon tulip.
Method 4 of 4: More Flowers to Try with Ribbon
Step 1. Make roses with ribbon
You can make ribbon roses with a piece of ribbon about 20cm long. Use a series of folds to create a stack of squares that will be the petals of the rose. Stop the ends before creating the next box, so that the corners group together to create a shape of rose.
Step 2. Make rosettes
You can make rosettes with wire or regular wire ribbon.
- When using wire tape, bundle the tape into a rosette by pulling the wire out to one side.
- If you are using non-metallic tape, you will need to fold two perpendicular pieces of tape on top of each other to form a spring. Hold one end of the ribbon steady as you pull on the other side, creating a rosette.
Step 3. Make ribbon chrysanthemums
To make a chrysanthemum, you will need to fold small pieces of ribbon to form half circles. Sew these means look in the center.
Step 4. Make a candy-shaped ribbon flower
Form loops from small pieces of ribbon. Glue these rings to a Styrofoam ball until the entire ball is completely covered, and insert a colored stick into the bottom of the Styrofoam ball as if it were a stem.
Step 5. Make satin flowers
Create elegant satin flowers by cutting small strips of fabric and joining one side of each strip to form a petal in the shape of a ciolota. Make a pistil with string and glue the petals around the pistil.
Step 6. Try making seamless satin flowers
Fold small strips of satin in half to length, cutting each end diagonally. Glue these petals into a circular shape to create a flower.
