Sometimes, the modern society we live in risks confusing us. If you are sick of going from one extreme to another - as the media seems to encourage - but are looking for something more stable and fulfilling, know that you can find true happiness (and wikiHow can help you!).
Steps
Part 1 of 5: Loving yourself
Step 1. Adopt a positive outlook
In the beginning, try to be careful when a negative thought crosses your mind. Recognize it and contrast it with another more positive one. To keep on track, you can also repeat an encouraging phrase throughout the day.
- Identify the positive aspects even in the most difficult situations. For example, treasure your experiences or consider people you've met.
- Learn to see failures as challenges that can make you grow.
Step 2. Accept yourself for who you are
Accept yourself because you are a wonderful person! Of course, you can smooth some sides, but never think there's anything wrong with you. Stop looking for perfection and accept your flaws!
Step 3. Build your self-confidence
You will be able to get the things you want, if you are convinced that you can do it and above all that you can do it for yourself. Trust yourself and take life head-on.
Step 4. Increase your self-esteem
Learn to love yourself and take care of yourself. It is the key to living a happy life. Even if you have few things, you can feel lucky if you appreciate yourself, are happy for who you are, and are satisfied with where you have come so far. Remember how special you are, keep in mind all the milestones you have achieved and think about all that you have yet to accomplish. Accept your mistakes and avoid conforming to unsustainable standards of perfection. Nobody is flawless!
Learn to be grateful to yourself and your life. Be grateful for all you have and have done
Step 5. Change for yourself
Never change for anyone but yourself. If you don't like some aspects of your life, you can always work to change them. However, if someone tries to influence your way of being, it means that they will never come to really appreciate you nor will you be able to change their way of thinking. It's hard to change, but you can only do it if you really want to.
Do not dwell on things too much and do not be influenced by social pressures! Think for yourself. You are the only person you should compete with and try to change just to improve yourself
Step 6. Ignore the so-called haters, the ones who hate regardless
Hate brings hate. There will always be someone who gets so frustrated that they think they can take it out on anyone. Don't let the lowliness of others take over and ruin your life or make you suffer. Basically, it's not worth bothering with these people. Ignore them and wish them a better life.
Step 7. Don't hesitate to meet your needs
Do whatever makes you happy. Give yourself something special from time to time, whether it's materially, spiritually or emotionally. Don't focus on just one aspect, ignoring everything else. Don't lose sight of the things that make you feel good, but go your own way!
Part 2 of 5: Loving Others
Step 1. Respect people
When you respect others and treat them the way you would like to be treated, they will begin to behave better towards you and, as a result, you will feel good about yourself. Remember that man is a social animal. We need others to live peacefully. Don't push them away by behaving in a hateful way.
Step 2. Give others what you expect from them
In any relationship, whether it's a friendship or a relationship, you have to offer what you would like to receive. From a bond you will only get what you are willing to give. Love people, make sacrifices, care for their good and don't be selfish.
However, be careful if anyone takes advantage of it. If someone shows you with their behavior that they don't care, for example by insulting you or making you suffer, exclude them from your life. These people tend to destroy only the happiness of others
Step 3. Help the neighbor
One of the best ways to feel completely satisfied is to help others with meaningful and concrete gestures. If you want to be happier, try offering your help. It could be a goal in daily life or you can choose to volunteer in your community.
Step 4. Celebrate the successes of others
Don't be envious or else you are destined for a sad and frustrating life. Rather, be happy when things are going well with the people around you. Try to be genuinely happy for them, even if a success doesn't touch you directly: learn from the good results of others instead of thinking they didn't deserve them and show victimizing attitudes.
Step 5. Accept the flaws
Everyone is different and has their flaws. If you are always attentive to the mistakes of others by letting yourself be conditioned so much that you lose your temper or spoil your mood, you will be doomed to live badly. Accept that differences make the world more interesting and move on.
Step 6. Communicate
Communication is the key to being happy among others. When someone hurts or mortifies you, it means that there is some communication problem. The same is true when you feel ignored or a friendship relationship is in crisis. So, try to talk to people by encouraging a more open and honest dialogue.
If there is exchange and understanding, you will prevent tension from arising
Part 3 of 5: Love What You Do
Step 1. Open yourself to new experiences
If you are looking for your own path, try to orient yourself towards the things that make you happy. Sometimes, we don't know what really satisfies us because we've never looked for it. Open yourself to new experiences and you will be surprised by yourself.
Take a few moments, moving away from the usual routine and environments that you are used to frequent. This way, you can step back and observe yourself more clearly
Step 2. Ask yourself why you like what you do
Identify all the jobs you like and ask yourself what attracts you to a particular profession. Analyze the key features. Not everyone can become a famous rock star or artist, but surely more than one career might interest you.
- To determine what you prefer, ask yourself the following questions: Would you do this type of work for free? How would you spend your free time if you didn't have any obligations?
- For example, do you want to be a rock star because you like to be the center of attention? Do you want to use your creativity or do you like listening to music? There are many jobs that allow you to express yourself this way!
Step 3. Follow your passions
Once you have identified what makes you feel happy and satisfied, follow this passion until you have a job that allows you to put it to good use. If you find a job that allows you to reach your goal, you will gladly get up in the morning and you will not feel discouraged when you close your eyes in the evening.
Step 4. Find your way to success
Find out what you need to pursue the career you want and roll up your sleeves. Read the job postings to understand what the requirements are. Don't be put off by what you see: there is always a way to go back to studying, even if you have little money.
Step 5. Always go ahead
Keep going, go your own way and don't throw in the towel. Always set new goals. As soon as you stop improving, you will begin to feel dissatisfied and bored.
Part 4 of 5: Getting Out of Your Shell
Step 1. Learn new skills
Enjoy life while also learning to do something you enjoy and can be proud of. Everyone has something they always wanted to learn. You are alive, so why not do it? Find the time and dedicate yourself to the things you would like to do.
Step 2. Be outdoors
Get out. When we spend too much time indoors, we start to feel trapped in a repetitive life. We often forget how exceptional the world can be. Did you know that there is a tree in Utah that is 80,000 years old? Enjoy the beauties that nature offers us instead of always having a disenchanted and indifferent air.
Step 3. Get more exercise
Don't always think about the line. What is important is to feel healthy and strong and to adopt habits that help to live long. When you are not in ideal physical condition, it is natural for you to feel weighted down, but be aware that your mood could improve surprisingly if you get back into shape.
Step 4. Travel, anywhere
Traveling allows you to have good times and open yourself up to people you might never know if you are always indoors in front of the computer. Go out, travel, even to nearby places. Forget about organized trips if you want to get the most out of these amazing experiences.
Step 5. Accept the risk
If you lead a life safe from all danger, nothing good or new will ever happen to you. You can't expect things to happen on their own because nothing will ever happen. To get something, you have to take a risk. Calculate the risks and rewards well, and make sure it's worth it (sometimes, just overstepping this limit is enough).
In a way, everything is a risk. Don't hold back if there is something you crave
Step 6. Don't neglect personal obligations and goals
Don't be swayed by fleeting moods. If you allow emotions to take over, you will be disappointed in the long run because they are transient and you will eventually become an unhappy person. Instead, you can live with joy and enthusiasm if you commit to something and work hard.
Part 5 of 5: Feeding Joy and Reducing Sadness
Step 1. Seize the day
You have to be the protagonist of your life, taking initiatives and taking advantage of the opportunities it offers you. This way, you will have the opportunity to delve into what it has in store for you. If you hesitate too much, you will only experience it as a spectator.
Start by doing one thing a day. Over time they will add up
Step 2. Accept the changes
Life changes, whether you want it or not. If you waste energy and stress trying to escape change, you will never be happy. So, accept them, even if they are difficult. If something really bad happens, you can always look for a solution or improve it. However, not all evils come to harm.
Step 3. Consider your priorities
Unhappy people tend to have wrong priorities. Check yours. If your car is worth more than your children, you will be destined for a sad existence. Once, a wise man said about material things, "You can't take them with you."
Step 4. Appreciate the positive things
When something good happens to you, celebrate and enjoy every moment instead of thinking you might miss it or want more. This way, you will be able to enjoy life better.
Step 5. Don't be disheartened by negative events
When you are having a hard time, don't be discouraged. It won't last long, because all things in life are transient. Try to improve the situation and think that sooner or later it will pass.
Step 6. Enjoy the world
Don't hold back your joy. As we grow up, we get used to silencing our emotions and being ashamed of them. Don't care what other people think when you are happy. Don't let their opinions compromise your happiness. Leave them to their moral poverty and try to be well.
Advice
- Love others and you will be reciprocated.
- Everything you do can be fun, whether it's studying or cleaning the bathroom. Make it a game. If you think about it, studying can be very enjoyable and interesting.
- Dance and, no matter how good you are, you will certainly never be as stiff as a piece of wood while moving.
- Do not make friends with people who do not like you because it will be difficult for them to change their mind and be favorably impressed by your qualities.
- The most important thing is to understand yourself and your needs. Live your life and try to feel its magic. There is nothing stopping you from thinking about your own good.
Warnings
- Take some things seriously. For example, when a friend is having a bad time, listen to them and stay close to them. Try to cheer him up.
- If you live a happy, stress-free life, some will see you with a little mistrust and try to put a spoke in the wheel, but don't be discouraged. Don't let them take over, or you will become sad and depressed like them.
- Don't get nervous. In difficult moments think that happiness has not abandoned you, but is hidden somewhere inside you.
