What's better than a sausage? A roll of sausage and bacon!
Ingrediants
- Frankfurters
- Slices of bacon (one slice for each sausage)
- Brown sugar to sprinkle on frankfurters (optional, but it's really delicious}
- Vegetable oil or butter
Steps
Step 1. Spread a slice of bacon on a wooden or silicon cutting board
Step 2. Place the frankfurter on one end of the bacon
Roll the bacon around the frankfurter until it is completely covered. Set it aside.
Step 3. Repeat with the remaining sausages
Toothpicks may be useful for attaching the bacon to the frankfurters - adjusted as you roll the bacon.
Step 4. Heat a thick-bottomed skillet over low heat
Add the butter or oil (use sparingly, as the bacon will get fatter as it cooks). Avoid grease splashes.
Step 5. Place the sausage and bacon rolls in the pan
If you wish, sprinkle them with a little brown sugar.
Step 6. Fry the rolls
Turn them halfway through cooking, when the bottom is well browned and the bacon starts to get crunchy. Fry until the bacon is cooked. Note: You may need to drain some of the fat from the pan at this point.
Step 7. Remove the pan from the heat
Carefully lift the cooked rolls with tongs or a spatula. Place them on absorbent paper to allow excess fat to dry.
Step 8. Serve with coleslaw, cheese, mustard, dips, or any other toppings you prefer with the wraps
Advice
- Thick sliced bacon is especially delicious, but it can take longer to cook.
- For a less fatty version, wrap the frankfurters in smoked bacon (as explained above), secure the ends of the bacon with toothpicks and bake on a hot grill. Flip the rolls when the top is roasted to your taste, and cook on the other side. Be careful not to burn the bacon. When cooked, drain on absorbent paper, remove the toothpicks and serve.
- A variation of this recipe is to make a cut in the frankfurters and stuff them with grated cheese before wrapping them in bacon. Cheddar cheese with medium or intense flavor is recommended, it is exquisite; those with more exotic tastes may prefer smoked gouda or havarti with cumin seeds. Note: the sausage stuffed with cheese are a little awkward to fry in a pan.
- Try microwaving the bacon until cooked, but not crunchy. Then wrap the sausages, secure the bacon with toothpicks and grill them. They will be very tasty.
