Camembert is a delicious French cheese, with a flowery, white rind, with a soft and creamy interior. If you've never tasted it before, try it at room temperature paired with jam, bread or crackers. You can also eat it warm, heated in the oven and on the barbecue or you can try adding it to some of your favorite dishes.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Eat Camembert at Room Temperature
Step 1. Let the cheese cool out of the refrigerator
Camembert tastes even better if you eat it at room temperature rather than cold. Take it out of the fridge 30 minutes before eating it so it has time to cool down.
Step 2. Cut the cheese into wedges
The best way to serve camembert is by cutting it into wedges, as if it were a pizza. It is easiest to slice it from the center with a sharp cheese knife.
The holes that characterize the upper part of the knife are used to prevent particularly sticky cheeses from sticking to the blade. If you don't have a cheese knife, you can use a simple sharp knife
Step 3. Taste the cheese crust to see if you like it
The Camembert rind is edible, but it can have a very intense flavor. Taste it and feel free to decide whether to eat it with the rest of the cheese or if you prefer to discard it.
- Taste two slices of cheese: one with a crust and one without.
- If you don't like the crust, you can remove it with the knife and eat only the inside of the cheese.
Step 4. Eat camembert on bread or crackers along with jam or honey
Cut a few slices of cheese and spread it on crackers or bread, preferably a French baguette. If you wish, you can add a layer of jam or honey on top.
- You can combine the camembert with the variety of jam you prefer. For example, it goes well with that of raspberries, cherries, figs or apricots.
- If you want, you can replace the jam with fresh fruit, for example with thin slices of pear, apple or peach.
Step 5. Eat the cheese within a couple of days of opening it
The camembert will remain edible for some time, but after a couple of days from the first cut the taste will start to change. The rind acts as a protective barrier for the cheese, therefore keeping it fresh and tasty.
As long as the rind remains intact, camembert can last for 1 to 2 weeks if you store it in the refrigerator or up to 6 months (and even longer) if you freeze it
Method 2 of 3: Eat Warm Camembert
Step 1. Warm it up inside its wooden box for a convenient solution
Take it out of the box and discard the paper wrapper. Return it to the wooden packaging and place it on a baking sheet without covering it. Heat the cheese in the oven at 200 ° C for 10 minutes or until it has melted.
Try dipping toast in melted cheese for a delicious snack
Step 2. Melt the Camembert on the barbecue
If you are cooking outdoors, heat the cheese in the coals and serve it as an appetizer or dessert. Wrap it carefully with aluminum foil and place it on the embers. Let it heat for 20-30 minutes, then take it with tongs and serve it inside the wooden box you bought it with.
You can accompany the camembert with garlic bread. Put it to heat on the grill next to the cheese
Step 3. Heat the camembert in a pan wrapped in prosciutto for an incredibly delicious result
Coat the cheese with several layers of thinly sliced ham. Heat some oil or butter in a pan, then brown the camembert on all sides.
- In a few minutes the cheese will become soft and creamy.
- Pair the camembert with bread or crackers.
Method 3 of 3: Camembert Recipes
Step 1. Cut the camembert and add it to a salad
Use a mix of savory herbs, such as rocket, then add the sliced cheese. Also add some pieces of apple or pear and a handful of cashews or walnuts. If you want, you can enrich the taste of the salad with a few slices of onion.
You can dress the salad simply or with a vinaigrette flavored with mustard and honey
Step 2. Pair the camembert with the pasta
Use it as a substitute for cream or milk in your favorite sauces. For example, you can combine it with mushrooms, ham or other cheeses. You can also add it to mashed potatoes: let it cool to room temperature and add it to the potatoes before mashing them.
For these dishes, it is best to remove the rind from the cheese and use only the inside
Step 3. Make a camembert sandwich
Butter the outer sides of the bread slices. Place a slice on the hot plate with the buttered side facing down. Add the camembert and your favorite sauce or jam. Place the second slice of bread on top of the cheese and heat the sandwich.
If you're using a sandwich griddle, when you're done assembling your sandwich, just close it to heat it up
Step 4. Fry the Camembert
Cut it into wedges and pass it in the flour after having flavored it with salt and a couple of pinches of dried thyme. Dip the floured pieces of cheese in the beaten egg and then in the breadcrumbs. Place them in abundant boiling oil (at least 5-8 cm of oil) and cook until they are uniformly golden.
