There are many recipes for making syrup, and most of them start with a very simple formula. You can make syrups to add to milk or other drinks, or you can use them to flavor breakfast dishes or desserts. You can also make your own version of corn syrup. Here are some ideas to consider.
Ingrediants
Basic Syrup
For 500 ml of syrup
- 1 cup of sugar
- 250 ml of water
Flavored Syrup for Milk
For 750 ml of syrup
- 2 cup of sugar
- 250 ml of water
- 2, 5 g fruit flavored sugar-free syrup preparation
Corn syrup
For 750 ml of syrup
- 200 g of Corn on the cob.
- 625 ml of water
- 450 g of sugar
- 1 teaspoon of salt
- Half a vanilla pod
Steps
Method 1 of 4: Method One: Basic Syrup
Step 1. Mix the water and sugar
Combine the two ingredients in a small, high-sided saucepan. Place the pot on the stove over medium-high heat.
- Start with cold water
- The doses of this recipe will allow you to create a thick syrup suitable for fresh fruit drinks, cocktails and candied fruit.
- To create a medium density syrup for use in iced tea and hot drinks, double the amount of water.
- For a light syrup to use as a cake glaze, triple the amount of water.
Step 2. Bring the solution to a boil
Stir when it boils to dissolve the sugar.
- Use a high or medium-high heat and mix using a wooden or plastic ladle.
- It may take 3-5 minutes to bring the solution to a boil.
- Check if the sugar has dissolved by scooping up part of the solution with the ladle. If you see any sugar crystals, keep boiling the syrup.
Step 3. Simmer the solution
Lower the heat and continue cooking for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
If you want to make a flavored syrup, add the flavors at this stage. You can add liquid ingredients, such as fresh lime or lemon syrup directly to the syrup and mix them. You should tie solid ingredients, such as orange peels, mint or cinnamon sprigs, inside a string-like gauze, similar to a tea bag, and soak them in the syrup
Step 4. Let the syrup cool
Remove the pot from the heat and allow it to cool to room temperature.
Do not put the syrup in the refrigerator at this stage. Let it cool on the kitchen counter to room temperature
Step 5. Use the syrup right away or save it
You can use the syrup right away for a recipe or store it in a covered container and refrigerate it for later use.
The syrup can last for 1-6 months in the fridge
Method 2 of 4: Method Two: Flavored Milk Syrup
Step 1. Mix the water and sugar
Combine them in a small pot. Adjust the heat to medium-high heat.
- Start with cold water for best results.
- Make sure the pot has high sides to prevent splashes of syrup from escaping.
Step 2. Boil the solution for 30-60 seconds
Heat the solution until it boils. When the solution boils, continue heating it for up to one minute.
- Boil the solution over medium-high heat, stirring often to help dissolve the sugar.
- Make sure the sugar has dissolved before removing the pan from the heat. If you can still see sugar crystals in the syrup, it needs to boil for longer.
Step 3. Let it cool
Remove the syrup base and let it cool to room temperature.
Do not put the syrup in the fridge at this stage
Step 4. Mix the syrup mix
When the syrup reaches room temperature, stir the mixture until it is well combined.
You can use the aroma you prefer. The powder is meant to melt, so you shouldn't have a problem doing that
Step 5. Add the syrup to the milk
Mix one tablespoon of syrup in 250ml of milk. Adjust the doses according to your preferences.
The remaining syrup can be stored in the fridge in a sealed jar for about a month
Method 3 of 4: Method Three: Corn Syrup
Step 1. Cut the corn into slices
Use a sharp knife to cut fresh corn on the cob into 2.5cm slices.
- This can be difficult, and you will need to use a heavy, sharp knife to do it. When cutting, put weight on the knife to cut harder. Be careful not to cut yourself at this stage.
- The corn flavor is only optional. The corn syrup you can buy in stores doesn't taste like corn, so if you want something similar to the commercial product, skip the steps that involve using corn and use 300ml of water instead of the full amount. The rest of the ingredients and steps will remain the same.
Step 2. Boil the corn and water over medium to high heat
Put the corn and cold water in a medium-sized pot. Bring to a boil.
Start with cold water for best results
Step 3. Reduce the intensity of the flame and let it simmer
As soon as the water starts to boil, lower the heat to medium heat and let the water simmer. Let it boil for about 30 minutes.
- Do not cover the pot.
- When you're done, the water level should have dropped by half.
Step 4. Filter the water
Pour the water and corn through a colander. Save the corn-flavored water and return it to the pot.
You can use corn for other recipes or throw it away
Step 5. Add the sugar and salt to the flavored water
Mix the sugar and salt in the water until they dissolve.
Step 6. Add vanilla to the solution
Remove the vanilla seeds from the pod and add them to the pot.
- For an even stronger vanilla flavor, add the pod to the syrup as well.
- If you don't have vanilla beans, you can use 5ml vanilla extract instead.
Step 7. Simmer the solution for 30-60 minutes
Simmer over medium or medium-low heat until all the sugar has dissolved and the solution thickened.
The solution should be thick enough to stick to the ladle when ready
Step 8. Let cool
Let the syrup reach room temperature.
Do not put the syrup in the fridge at this stage
Step 9. Use it immediately or keep it
You can use corn syrups right away, or you can store it in the refrigerator for several months.
- Store the syrup with the vanilla pod inside.
- If sugar crystals start to develop over time, you can microwave the syrup with a drop of water until it is lukewarm. Stir to dissolve the crystals, then use it as normal.
Method 4 of 4: Method Four: More Syrup Recipes
Step 1. Flavor a base syrup with vanilla
You can add a pod or vanilla extract to the base syrup recipe to create a syrup to serve with desserts.
Step 2. Make ginger-flavored syrup
By adding freshly chopped ginger to the classic syrup recipe you can create a flavorful alternative to add to club soda or drop tea.
Step 3. Make a fruit syrup
Most fruit syrups are easy to make. Add some fruit juice or jam to the recipe when you simmer the syrup.
- Try some strawberry syrup. You can combine fresh strawberries, water and sugar to create a syrup to put on pancakes, waffles, ice cream and many other desserts.
- Make lemon syrup to add to drinks and foods. You can make lemon syrup with fresh lemons, sugar, and water. You can also try making it with tartaric acid.
- Choose a lime syrup instead. This is another citrus-scented alternative to lemon syrup, and just add freshly squeezed lime juice to the basic syrup recipe.
- Make blueberry syrup. Add blueberries to the base syrup recipe to make one for breakfast and desserts.
- Try apricot syrup. You can use ripe apricots, cointreau, lemon juice and sugar to create a rich and elegant syrup that you can use for cooking, baking and making drinks.
- Try cherry syrup. You can use sugar, lemon juice, orange juice, vanilla and fresh cherries to create a sweet and tasty syrup.
- Create a flavorful and unique fig syrup. Simmer the figs in brandy or sherry until the alcohol evaporates. Blend the thick syrup before using it.
- Make a great grape syrup. You can use strawberry grapes along with a light corn syrup and sugar to create an unusual syrup with a familiar flavor.
Step 4. Use edible flowers to create a sweet and fragrant syrup
You can try the following flowers.
- Try a rose or rose and cardamom syrup. You can make these syrups with rose water, rose essence and organic rose petals.
- You can make a violet syrup with fresh, organic violets.
Step 5. Collect real maple syrup from local maple trees
To do this you will need to collect and filter some maple resin. You will need to boil the resin to make it a syrup.
Alternatively, make some artificial maple syrup with maple flavors or extracts
Step 6. Try using the coffee aroma
By adding strong coffee and some rum or orange juice to the base syrup recipe you can create one with a rich, deep flavor that's perfect for garnishing cakes and for putting in milk.
Step 7. Make a chocolate syrup
You can use unsweetened cocoa to turn simple syrup into a delicious addition to milk or ice cream.
Step 8. Use tea leaves to make a syrup to put in iced tea
By adding tea leaves to your syrup you can create sweet iced tea without diluting the aroma of the tea.
Step 9. Make barley syrup
This particular syrup is a fundamental ingredient of the "mai tai" cocktail and you can make it with almond flour, sugar, vodka, water and rose water.
Step 10. Make homemade spiced cider syrup
This syrup is an interesting alternative to maple syrup and can be served with sweet toast, pancakes or waffles. It is flavored with apple cider, sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg.
