Making ketchup at home is a healthy alternative to ready-made ketchup. Preparing food at home is a great way to limit the amount of chemical additives and preservatives you consume every day. Here is a recipe that tells you how to make ketchup:
Steps
Step 1. Place 840g canned peeled tomatoes or 900g chopped fresh tomatoes in a large pot
Step 2. Add 1/4 teaspoon allspice, 1/4 teaspoon celery seeds, and 1/4 teaspoon chilli flakes or cayenne pepper
Step 3. Mix 1 cinnamon stick, 3 cloves, 1 chopped medium onion, 1 peeled and crushed clove of garlic and 1/2 teaspoon of mustard seeds
Step 4. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, for about 45 minutes to 1 hour or until the onions are soft
Step 5. Remove from heat and let cool
Step 6. Put the mixture in a blender or blender
Depending on the size of your mixer or blender, you may have to blend several times
Step 7. Blend on high speed for about 1 minute or until puree
Step 8. Drain the mixture with a tightly mesh strainer or cheesecloth
You can choose to skip this step if you prefer a heavier ketchup with more pulp
Step 9. Return the liquid you drained to the pot
Step 10. Add 50 g of brown sugar, 125 ml of white wine vinegar and 1 1/2 teaspoons of salt to the tomato mix
Step 11. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until it reaches your preferred consistency
Step 12. Remove the pot from the heat and let it cool
Step 13. Transfer the mixture to a glass jar or canning container with a lid
Step 14. Store it in the refrigerator
Step 15. Consume within 3 weeks
Advice
- Spice up your ketchup with various flavors by adding a bay leaf and / or 1 teaspoon of paprika to the mixture before cooking.
- Organic ketchup can be expensive and hard to find, but homemade ketchup is just as healthy and doesn't contain the sugars of glucose syrup. If you use tomatoes and herbs from your own garden, you will make ketchup far better than organic.
- If you prefer a spicier flavor, you can give your ketchup a boost with 1 to half a teaspoon of chopped jalapeno pepper.
