Personal checks have become a less common form of payment since the advent of ATM cards and other forms of electronic payment. However, learning to write a check correctly is important. This reduces the risk of an unaccepted payment or check forgery. Find out how to write a check with cents.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Part One: Non-Monetary Fields
Step 1. Make the first blank check in your checkbook
If your booklet includes autographed paper, make sure there is a piece of plastic or cardboard underneath so that the ink is imprinted on the autographed paper.
While not all passbooks are autographed, it is used to keep a copy of the check as proof of payment
Step 2. Fill in the date on the blank line in the upper right corner of the check
Always use a pen to write checks so they can't be changed.
In the United States, you will need to use the month / day / year format. In the UK, the day / month / year format will be used
Step 3. Add the name of the payee to the right of the "Pay when ordering" line
Ask for the official name of the person or company, to check that it is being done to the right person.
Method 2 of 3: Part Two: The Monetary Fields
Step 1. Fill in the payment amount in the box next to the payee line
The box must be preceded by a currency sign.
Write this amount with two numbers after the decimal point. For example, the box should read "$ 78.94". Include a double zero if there are no cents
Step 2. Fill in the text, on the line below the payee
- In the first part of the line, write the numbers in words. For example, "Seventy-eight". Even for larger numbers you will always write the text, such as "Two thousand five hundred and seventy eight".
-
In the portion of the line for the cents, write the word "e" followed by a fraction. For example, "and 94/100". The entire line would appear as "Seventy-eight and 94/100".
-
Draw a line on any additional part of the line that is not used to write numbers. This will help you avoid anyone adding or changing your figure.
Method 3 of 3: Part Three: Signature of the Check
Step 1. Write the reason for the check on the bottom left line
You can write "For …" or the reason. Make sure you include a clear reason in case it is necessary to refer to the check at a later date.
Step 2. Sign the check on the bottom right line
Be sure to include your full name which was used to create the checking account.
