Are you studying for a verification on Canadian territories and provinces (geography)? There are 10 provinces and 3 territories. The provinces have more autonomy than the territories. This article will help you remember their names and locations.
Steps
Method 1 of 1: Memorize Canadian territories and provinces
Step 1. Get familiar with Canadian provinces and territories
You can do this with most Canadian papers. Make sure you can spell names correctly.
Step 2. Memorize the 'main' provinces
The names are British Columbia, Alberta, Saskechewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec and Newfoundland. You could use the acronym BASMOQN ('bas-mok-win'). Try making sentences with the same initials, for example (in English): 'Bill and Sally Made One Quart of Nothing', 'Bart A. Simpson Marred Our Quiet Night' or 'Buy Albert's Scary Men on Quilts Now'. Use your imagination!
Step 3. Memorize the 3 'main' territories
They are the Yukon, the Northwest and the Nunavut. The acronym is YNN ("yin"): "Why an N?", "You're Not Naked".
Step 4. Memorize the last 3 provinces in the southeastern corner
They are Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Imagine it as a triangle: Prince Edward Island at the top, Nova Scotia in the right corner and New Brunswick on the left. Some acronyms: PEI-NB-NS ("pay-noo-bens") and “Please Excuse It, Nobody Brought NeverSoft” (PEI, NBNS).
Step 5. Reinforce your knowledge
Use online resources to test and reinforce your knowledge, for example with the geography quizzes at
Advice
- Try printing a couple of blank maps of Canada, with borders only. Then test yourself and try to enter the names.
- Try looking at the map, looking away and reciting the names.
- Study, study, study!
- Do some research on each province and each territory, or maybe go to Canada if you can. You will find everything easier to remember knowing or having experienced the customs of each place.
Warnings
- Don't cheat or procrastinate. It will be much better if you prepare gradually over several weeks.
- Also be sure to write provinces and territories correctly, as some teachers may notice.
