Fitting fog lights on the machine can greatly improve visibility conditions in bad weather. Most kits have very detailed instructions on how to install and are designed for those unfamiliar with wiring. Fitting the fog lights is a different process for each car, follow these general instructions to get started.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Choose the Fog Lights
Step 1. Follow the legal requirements
Some types of headlights may be prohibited by current regulations.
Step 2. Choose the type of bulb
There are three types of light bulbs available, choose the one that's right for you
- LEDs shed a lot of light and last longer. They consume less energy and are also less susceptible to vibrations. The downside is their cost, which is much higher than normal halogen bulbs.
- HID (High Intensity Discharge) use xenon gas to produce bright light. They like it a lot because the light they produce is similar to daylight.
- The halogens are those of the oldest use, but also the most widespread and the cheapest. However, they tend to overheat and burn.
Step 3. Choose the style of the headlights
There is a wide range of fog lights but generally all fall into three categories. Choose the one that best suits your vehicle.
- On the bumper. Bumper-mounted headlights are usually round or rectangular, and are most of the fog lights produced as standard in automobiles.
- On the grill. Larger and rounder, they are mounted on the grille or immediately behind. They are typical of trucks and SUVs.
- Rack. Round or rectangular, they are generally mounted above the vehicle or on front supports, also typical of trucks or SUVs.
Method 2 of 2: Install the Fog Lights
Step 1. Make sure the vehicle is stopped and turned off
Try to be on a level surface and apply the handbrake.
Step 2. Open the hood
The fog lights mounted in the bumper are located immediately below the dipped headlights. Check the car manual if you can't find them.
Step 3. Unhook the fog light switch from the housing
This way the lights will be disconnected from the machine's electrical system. To do this, just detach the clip.
Step 4. Remove the washer, bolt and nut
In this way you can remove the housing of the fog lights. Keep all the pieces aside until you have finished the installation.
Step 5. Remove the housing
Be careful not to scratch the bumper. If you are installing grille or rack lights, be careful not to scratch the roof or car body.
Step 6. Insert the new fog lights
They should fit smoothly into the space occupied by the old ones. If they don't go then maybe you have the wrong headlights.
Make sure the screw holes line up, otherwise you may need to make more
Step 7. Insert the bolt
Slide the washer and nut over the bolt and tighten with a wrench or ratchet. Do not over tighten as you could damage the housing or the vehicle. The housing must be well closed and stable.
Step 8. Reconnect the switch
Use the clip to reconnect the light switch. New lights should be properly powered by the car's battery.
Step 9. Start the engine
Try the new lights, make sure they give a good view and don't dazzle other drivers.
Advice
If you are replacing the bulbs and not the housing, make sure you have the same type
Warnings
- Make sure the car is off before changing the lights.
- Do not touch the bulbs directly with your hands.
