Dark windows are becoming very popular with motorists almost everywhere; if you want them for privacy, to protect yourself from heat and harmful UV rays or simply for the elegant and shiny look they give to your car, you can try to darken them yourself. While not an easy task for beginners, the instructions below will help and guide you towards the new look of your car.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Evaluate the Options
Step 1. Find out about the laws in your state that regulate window color
Many countries have specific regulations as dark front windows make it difficult to recognize the driver or make eye contact during roadside checks. You can do some research online or contact some auto glass installer.
Step 2. Decide what type of window you want
There are all types of opaque films nowadays, there are different shades and effects such as metallic, glossy or mirrored.
Step 3. Evaluate the various options
Before deciding to buy films, consider the pros and cons of each choice. For instance:
-
OEM tinted windows:
these glasses are colored inside during the glass formation process. They usually have a light coloration which is deemed legal in many states, even in those where the rules are stricter. Remember that OEM glass is very expensive to replace if it breaks.
-
Surface coloring:
with this method, a special coloring solution is applied to existing glass, usually with the spray. Surface coloring lasts longer than film coatings although not many professionals do it because you have to completely disassemble the windows and do it correctly.
-
Colored film:
colored films are the most popular technique for tinting windows after the car has been purchased. First of all you have to treat the glass and then spread the thin polymer film. It is probably the cheapest method and some installers also claim that this coating reduces the chances of the glass shattering in the event of a collision. However, the films are not a permanent job and must be replaced every 5 years or so to prevent them from peeling, cracking and blistering.
Consider having the film put on by a professional installer if you have never done it before. This way you avoid damaging the film and leaving bubbles
Method 2 of 2: Apply the Color Film
Step 1. Clean the windows
Do a thorough cleaning, both inside and out, using a specific solution and a water pump. You may need to clean them two or three times to completely remove the dirt. In addition, cleaning is very important to avoid the formation of bubbles.
- Remember to clean the gasket as well.
- Use a razor blade to remove any residue.
Step 2. Measure and cut out the film
Unroll the film by placing it on the window (the sticky part is the film, the silky part is the protection). Cut the film approximately according to the window measurements using a cutter. Do this with extreme caution.
Always cut the film leaving a 2.5 cm border of safety on each side. This way you are sure to cover the entire window
Step 3. Cut the film
Position it so that the bottom edge drops about half an inch past the edge of the glass. Cut out the vertical sides first with a cutter. Then lower the window about 5 cm and cut the film so that it follows the line of the top edge of the glass.
- Be sure to pay attention to the cutter to avoid damaging the glass.
- Accurate work requires many cutting attempts.
Step 4. Roll out the application solution
Spray it liberally on the inside of the glass. Then remove the backing from the film and spray the adhesive side with the same solution.
Step 5. Apply the film
Carefully place it on the glass, with the sticky side facing the window. Slide the film into place starting from the bottom up. You have to roll down the window gradually as you work.
- Use a water puller to apply pressure on the glass starting from the center outwards.
- Apply more and more pressure as you feel the film begin to adhere to the glass. Make sure no bubbles form.
- Pull up the window and continue applying the film to the bottom of the window. Slip the bottom edge under the seal.
- Push the excess of application solution from the center towards the edges with a water puller wrapped in a paper towel.
Advice
- When you apply the film, your car should be in a dust-free environment with a temperature between 5 ° C and 38 ° C.
- Get help from a friend. Applying the film is easier for two.
Warnings
- These instructions apply only to the side windows of each vehicle. Fixed windows that cannot be opened are not taken into account.
- Do not use ammonia or vinegar based products to clean glass or film.
