Making a mermaid costume is easy and fun, and the right costume will make you look like a divinity of the oceans. If you want to find out how to make one, just follow these easy steps.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Create the Mermaid Tail
Step 1. Make a skirt
Get 5 and a half meters of green organza. The skirt you make should fit snugly around your waist and fall down to your feet.
- Cut out a rectangle from the green fabric according to your measurements.
- Use hot glue to join the ends of the fabric together to create a pencil skirt.
- The seam will be on the back of the costume.
- If you can take longer, sew the fabric using thread of the same color.
Step 2. Get a few pieces of light stretch fabric
They will be used to create the fins. The fabric can be light blue, blue, shiny or metal colored. You can use only one color, but also several colors together.
Step 3. Cut the fabric into one meter by one meter squares
Grab one end of the square, and twist the fabric
Step 4. Attach the fabric to a cloth
The cloth should lie flat on a table.
Step 5. Twist the fabric a few more times until it looks reduced
Step 6. Iron the fabric
Step 7. Grab the fabric and shake it
Do this gently, as if you were shaking a handkerchief.
Step 8. Repeat this process until you have at least six pieces of ironed stretch fabric
Step 9. Attach the stretch fabric to your skirt
Put hot glue on different spots around the center of the skirt, and attach the pieces of stretch fabric. They should be attached in one place and fall down the skirt.
They should start falling just below the knees. They can fall from the same height, or from different points, to vary
Step 10. Draw scales on the skirt
Use a gold-colored fabric dye to draw the scales all over the skirt. Each scale can measure approximately 6 or 7 cm and should look like a "C" placed on its side.
Step 11. Give the skirt time to dry
Wait for the fabric dye and fins to dry before trying on your new costume.
Method 2 of 3: Create the Top
Step 1. Get a nude tank top or bikini
It should have cups to maintain thickness.
Step 2. Place the top on a table
Step 3. Place small bowls under the cups to support the top
Step 4. Collect some small shells
A few handfuls of white and sand-colored shells will be enough for your look.
Step 5. Use a hot glue gun to apply some glue to one of the cups
Attach a shell or two. Repeat this process until you have covered the cups.
Step 6. Wait for the top to dry
Step 7. Brush the shells with some gold polish or paint
Do it lightly.
Method 3 of 3: Complete your Mermaid Look
Step 1. Style your hair like a mermaid's
Make your hair look wavy and sprinkled with sand. They can even look a little wet, as if you have just emerged from the ocean.
Put on a headband with shells if you have one. You can also add a starfish hair clip
Step 2. Dress up like a mermaid
Your mermaid make-up should make you look natural and beautiful. You don't have to wear heavy makeup to get the right look.
- Put on a light pink lipstick.
- Put on an eyeshadow in soft shades of blue, green or purple.
- Add some silver or blue mascara for extra emphasis. If you wear black mascara, make sure it's light.
- Add a veil of makeup on your face.
Step 3. Put on mermaid shoes
Your footwear should be simple and suitable for the beach. Since real mermaids don't wear shoes, your skirt should almost completely cover their feet, and they don't need to be attention-grabbing.
- Wear flip-flops or sober sandals decorated with shells.
- Wear brown or neutral-colored footwear.
- Color your fingers and toes with a little pink nail polish.
- Avoid wearing heels.
Step 4. Add mermaid accessories to your costume
Mermaids don't have much time to think about ornaments, because they are busy swimming, but there is something you can add to complete the mermaid look. Here is something you might try:
- Put on rings or necklaces that change color according to the time.
- Wear a coral-colored handbag.
- Wear coral or shell jewelry.
Advice
- Buy more fabric than you need so that you have enough if you make a mistake.
- If you are unable to collect shells, you can purchase them at a decoration shop.
