Club fashion had a style of its own. The everyday clothing of the 70s would not have been appropriate for a night at the club. Instead, men and women wore flashy fabrics and bold styles. If you have to go to a nightclub party, make yourself perfect by wearing a flared dress that reflects the light well.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: For Women
Women's disco fashion includes both short skimpy dresses and long suits that cover practically everything. Choose the style you feel most comfortable in.
Step 1. Choose the right fabric
The disco dress was made of elastic and shiny fabric, which easily reflected the bright lights of a nightclub. Look for materials like elastane, lycra, velvet, and polyester. Also consider pieces that are heavily decorated with sparkling sequins or gold lamé.
Step 2. Try on a mini skirt or mini dress
Midi skirts, which reach mid-calf, also went a long way in the 1970s. Look for a model that widens slightly from the waist. The skirt may have pleats, but it is not necessary. If you opt for a mini dress, look for one with an American neckline.
Step 3. Look for a 70s-style one-piece suit
The full suit was a one-piece elastane garment. Typically, the legs were snug on the thighs and spread across the knees. The suit could have flared sleeves starting from the elbow or it could not have any. Many one-piece suits also featured a halter neck or a plunging v-neckline.
Step 4. Wear tight shorts
In the 1970s, shorts were very short shorts that hugged the butt in a bold way, but barely covered the legs. The shorts adhered completely to the woman's legs and did not spread.
Step 5. Choose a pair of flared pants
Not all women used to expose their legs so much when they went to the disco. Many favored flared trousers. You should still look for them in shiny, form-fitting fabric. Avoid flared jeans, as they would be too casual to wear at the club.
Step 6. Choose a shiny, tight shirt
The styles in vogue at the club included the top and the headband. For a less skimpy option that covers the arms, consider a fitted, long-sleeved top, with flared sleeves starting at the elbow. Look for sequined tops, a metallic leopard print, or other eye-catching prints.
Step 7. Take out the wedges
Look for a pair that is 2.5 to 5cm tall. Indeed, women could wear wedges up to 10 cm high, but it could prove risky for those not used to wearing them. Look for bright colors or metallic patterns. Stick to closed-front models, as they were more common at the time.
Step 8. Bring your hair straight and long
Use a straightener to make your hair as smooth as possible, and consider applying extensions if it is too short.
Step 9. Alternatively, add volume to your hair
While straight hair was slightly more in vogue in the 70s, so were wide and voluminous curls. If your hair holds the curl well, treat yourself to voluminous curls a la 'Farrah Fawcett'.
Step 10. Use makeup to highlight the eyes
Use dark eyeliner around the eyes. Choose from black, brown, purple, gray or blue colors. Stay away from bright colors. Apply liquid eyeshadow. Look for a dark color that really highlights your eyes.
Step 11. Complete with sparkling jewels
Think pompous beaded bracelets and locket necklaces or pendants. Look for bright pieces that reflect light well.
Method 2 of 2: For Men
Men's disco clothing had fewer variations than women's. Either way, you have the option to go with or without a suit.
Step 1. Pay attention to the fabric
Women weren't the only ones wearing shiny, tight fabrics. The men also wore suits of elastane, lycra and polyester for the purpose of shaping the body. Satin, sequins and other shiny materials were especially important for reflecting light.
Step 2. Put on an unbuttoned open collar shirt
Better if with long sleeves. Choose one with a bright color, with a shiny fabric. Leave a few buttons open at the top, showing the chest. You could also consider raising the collar, but only if it is to your liking.
Step 3. Find a pair of flared or flared trousers
Look for flared trousers starting from the knee. Avoid jeans; opt for satin or polyester instead.
Step 4. Wear a jacket of your choice
If possible, find a jacket that belongs to a three-piece suit, along with trousers and a vest. Otherwise, look for one with reflective elements that matches the fabric and color of the pants. The sleeves must be straight and with buttons at the cuffs.
Step 5. Put on a pair of wedge shoes
Look for a pair with relatively low soles. While nightclub fashion in the 1970s allowed men to wear 10cm high wedges, most men today would not be comfortable with such tall shoes. Keep choosing flat shoes to prevent injuries and to avoid foot pain.
Step 6. Add volume to your hair
Use the gel or other specific product to add volume and height to your hair. Alternatively, if you have thick hair and the right texture, you might want to try an Afro-style hairdo.
Step 7. Choose a medallion pendant necklace as an accessory
Men didn't necessarily wear a lot of jewelry, but they often wore some. Choose one with a shimmering charm that stays inside the shirt neckline, on the bare chest.
