There are very few moments worse than when you realize you have lost your keys, while other times you have to leave the house in a hurry and don't remember exactly where they may have ended up. You can avoid these problems and check where the keys are at any time using technological tools, such as Bluetooth key fobs, or rely on "old-fashioned" methods, such as a precise and constant routine, so that you can always remember where your keys are and have no problems starting your day.
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Using Tracking Devices
Step 1. Learn about “smart” key fobs
These integrate a wireless connection and tracking device inside them and can be hung on your set of keys; they are as big as normal key fobs but send a signal that can be received and recognized by your smartphone using the Bluetooth connection. Since they are wireless and have a great ease of use, they are the best choice for those looking for a cutting-edge solution that helps them keep their sets of keys under control.
Many of these items are quite inexpensive and have rechargeable or easily replaceable batteries. However, the technology continues to improve relentlessly, so new versions are often updated by adding more features
Step 2. Compare prices and features before proceeding with the purchase
There are many models on the market, with very different prices and offering different possibilities; you should compare at least two different types before buying one, in order to check which one is best for you. Some of the most popular are:
- Lapa: can help you find the keys up to a distance of 60 meters. It has a modern and characteristic design and offers the possibility both to identify the position of the keys from the smartphone and to make the phone ring by clicking a button on the key ring. The cost is about € 25, it is waterproof and is compatible with Android and iOS systems, using a free application that gives you the ability to view the location (current or last known) of the keychain on a map. The battery (button type, similar to that of wristwatches) should last about a year and is easily replaceable.
- Chipolo Plus: a round and thin tag, which can also be slipped into the wallet or hung on the bag without being intrusive. The features it offers are similar to the previous model, including waterproofing and support for a dedicated application, while there is no possibility to replace the battery. The prices are in line with Lapa and, when the device is unloaded, you can buy a new one at a discounted price.
- Wire: this "smart" keychain is an Italian product that has nothing to envy to other international devices: resistant to splashes and rain, Bluetooth connection up to 80 meters away with support for Android and iOS smartphones, possibility to play the keychain using the phone and vice versa, easily replaceable button battery. The cost is € 30, slightly higher than that of some rivals.
Step 3. Find the keys using your mobile
Most electronic keychains support interaction with Android and iOS devices: you need to use a Bluetooth connection and download the manufacturer's application, which will interface with your device.
- You will have to hang the keychain on the deck to keep under control and set the features through the dedicated application, to be used even when you need to look for the keys.
- Many devices support “two-way” tracking. You will then be able to find your phone using the key fob: by pressing a special button the mobile will start ringing, which will be very useful if you tend to forget where you put it.
- If you unfortunately lose both your keys and your phone, you can log into your account (created via the application) using a computer and locate both objects easily.
Method 2 of 2: Leverage Consistency and Routine
Step 1. Put the keys in a special bowl or hang them near the front door
Since we tend to be beings of habit, we can help us find any object by choosing a special place to store it every time. In this case, you could use a bowl near the front door of the house to place the keys when you return, or use some nice colored hooks to hang them when you return and from which you can quickly retrieve them when you need to leave.
Putting the keys near the entrance or the main door will allow you to put them in their place as soon as you get home (although, unfortunately, it will also be one of the first places where a potential thief can look for them). Over time it will become a natural habit and you will no longer have problems finding them even when you are in a hurry, because they will be in their "usual place"
Step 2. Put the set of keys in the same pocket every day
If you tend not to find your keys when you are out and about, make it a habit to always put them in the same pocket as your jacket or trousers (always be careful, because the coat is the target of excellence for thieves); you can also make this gesture part of your daily preparation, putting on your clothes and immediately inserting, as a finishing touch, the keys in the pocket of your choice. Always using the same will allow you not to forget where you put the deck because it will always be there, even when you are away from home.
Step 3. Use a flashy and easy-to-find keychain inside the bag
You could also use a large, noticeable keychain that doesn't vanish into the depths of your purse. Such an object is unlikely to end up in the wrong place, especially if it has a very recognizable decoration.
- Otherwise, create a personalized keychain by weaving colored plastic threads into a long ring to hang on the keys, so as to find them quickly in the bag; a good alternative would be to laminate some small photos of your relatives and friends and hang them on the deck. A personalized keychain will make it stand out and clearly identify it as yours.
- Another useful object could be a small clutch bag with the key ring, so that you can carry them with you along with some money or the payment cards you use most often: it will be easier for you to keep everything under control if you will have other important items along with the keys.
- Alternatively, buy a keychain with decorative jewels or pendants, easy to spot in the bag; look for models that are comfortable to hold and with a recognizable weight.
Step 4. Hang a hook from the belt loops to carry the keys with you at all times
A popular option is also to use a hook or carabiner (often used in climbing disciplines to secure the ropes). You can slip the key ring into the hook and then attach the latter to a belt loop of the trousers, so that the keys are well secured while you move. Carabiners come in various shapes and colors and are generally very reliable.
Carabiners are great for this task, because they allow you to put your keys in your pocket without additional bulk; so you can sit quietly without having to reposition them and without any discomfort. If you have a rather crowded deck it would be best to move them when you sit down, while still keeping them hooked to your pants
Step 5. Give a trusted friend or neighbor a copy of the keys
If you tend to lose them often, you might as well leave an additional deck to a trusted person as a precaution. Talk to someone you trust and can contact easily, in case you need spare keys quickly.
