If you're building or renovating your home and don't want to waste money, you might want to think about learning how to install bathroom plumbing and bathroom fixtures yourself. You can do it!
Steps
Method 1 of 2: Installation
Step 1. Decide where the pipes and sanitary ware will be placed
- You will need to be clear about the placement of the tub (or shower), sink and toilet. This way you will determine where to run the pipes.
- You will need to make holes in the floor to place the pipes that will go to the bathroom fixtures, for this reason it is important to know the exact location.
- Find and mark carefully all the spots where you will go to dig and drill.
- Take the measurements again to make sure the markings are accurate. "Measure twice, cut once": it will also be a saying, but it makes a lot of sense.
- Make all necessary cuts and holes. Better to make some preparations before turning off the water and thus minimize the time "dry".
Step 2. Close the central water tap in the house
Before working on the pipes, turn off the water. Find the valves and close them
Step 3. Install the water pipes
- For a standard bathroom you will need 5 lines: one hot and cold for the tub / shower and faucet, and one cold water for the toilet.
- Depending on how the bathroom is positioned you can run the pipes through the wall or from the floor.
- Hook hoses from the hot and cold lines to the sink and tub faucets.
- Use sandpaper to clean the copper pipes and make them smooth, then solder them to the main pipe.
Step 4. Connect the drain hoses
For the bathroom you will need different sized drain pipes. The toilet flush can be 3 inches (about 8 cm) or 4 inches (about 10 cm). After attaching the hose to the toilet drain, it should run down to the main pipe. The sink drain will be 1.5 inches (about 4 cm), that of the tub 2 inches (about 5 cm)
Step 5. Place the toilet
It usually consists of 2 pieces: a cup and a tray. Start with the cup.
- Connect the flange from the drain hose to the toilet. To do this, glue the flange in the position it needs to hold by aligning it with the screw holes in the toilet.
- Put the toilet on top of the screws and flange. Try sitting on the toilet and moving around a bit to find the correct position.
- Check it is level, then tighten the flange nuts and washers
- Attach the bowl to the toilet using nuts.
- Connect the water hose and then seal with silicone around the base of the toilet to seal it all together.
Step 6. Install the sink
Start by placing the support to take a test.
- Mark the floor where the bolts will go and drill holes through the sink holder, then secure it to the floor using nuts and bolts.
- Connect the sink to the hot and cold water pipes. Also put handles, plug and drain in the top of the sink.
- Place the sink on its stand and glue an adapter with screws to the drain pipe.
Step 7. Put on the bath and shower accessories
- Mark the floor around the tub so you know where the drain will go.
- Pull the tube through and secure it.
- Once this is done, glue the tub tube to the drain.
- Put the tub and check that it is level.
Method 2 of 2: Maintenance
Step 1. Use a plunger if the bathroom is clogged
- Once the bathroom plumbing is fixed, you may still have problems in the future.
- To unclog the toilet, press the plunger against the hole and push up and down.
- If that doesn't work, you can use a coil that has a hook at one end and a handle at the other end and allows you to push it all the way into the pipes.
Step 2. Unclog the sink using the plunger or the serpentine
- If the sink is clogged, you can use the plunger or the serpentine.
- You can also clean the siphon under the sink by removing the cover. It will be at the bottom of the pipe, just before it sticks to the wall.
- Try tucking in a cord or hanger to see if you can pull anything out. If that doesn't work, unclip the hose using a wrench and use a cleaner.
Step 3. Use a floor drain hose
- Remove the filter from the floor drain and push the hose in as far as possible.
- Put rags around the hose to close the drain.
- Open the water to maximum and then close it.
- Keep turning the water on and off until it goes down smoothly.
