The safest remedy for passing a tox test is to refrain from using drugs and wait for the body to detox on its own, but if you have to undergo a urinalysis within a few days, you can experiment with some home remedies. There are also some tricks for special tests, such as that of hair, blood or saliva. Follow the tips in the article to increase your chances of passing the test. However, please be aware that you may lose your job or be subjected to disciplinary action or legal action if someone finds out that you have tried to alter your exam results; so it's best to avoid it.
Steps
Part 1 of 4: Wait for the Body to Detoxify
Step 1. Stop using drugs as soon as you have been told that you need to pass a drug test
If there are still a few days left, stop using any narcotics right away so that your body has time to excrete the ones you have taken so far. Do not use any type of drug during the days or weeks leading up to the toxicological examination.
If withdrawal symptoms scare you, go to the hospital or see your doctor. You may need to go through a detox program under the supervision of a qualified expert if you can't go without that substance
Step 2. Postpone the exam as much as possible
Depending on the substance and the flexibility of the test date, you may be able to wait for your body to detox itself. Find out how long it takes on average for the body to expel it and try to wait until then. The detection window varies based on the frequency and amount of drug intake, but in general you can refer to these data:
- Alcohol: from 2 to 96 hours;
- Amphetamines: 3 to 7 days;
- Cocaine: 24 to 96 hours;
- Marijuana: 2 to 84 days;
- Heroin: 48 to 96 hours;
- Opiates: 3 to 7 days;
- Phencyclidine (PCP): 3 to 14 days.

You can look for and purchase a kit to perform it at home. If so, keep in mind that the results may change depending on the time of day.
Step 3. Drink plenty of water during the days or weeks leading up to the tox screen
Thanks to water, the body is able to excrete toxic substances, but the process takes time. Try to drink at least two liters of water a day during the weeks leading up to the test, to help your body detoxify naturally.
- Always keep a bottle of water on hand and refill it as often as needed.
- If it's hot and exercising, try to drink even more.
Part 2 of 4: Pass an Upcoming Urine Test
Step 1. Urinate at home on the morning of the exam
During the night, drugs are able to accumulate in the body, so the concentration in the first urine of the day is higher. Do not go to the exam without first urinating at home. Go to the bathroom as soon as you wake up.
For example, if the exam is scheduled for 9 am, get up at 7 am and urinate immediately
Step 2. Drink at least 700ml of water during the two hours leading up to the exam
This is a very popular technique among all those who need to pass an unexpected toxicological test. Start drinking water on the morning of the exam or at least two hours before the scheduled time to increase urine production and dilute the concentration of drugs.
For example, if the tox exam is scheduled for 11 am, wake up and start drinking water at 9 am
Step 3. Take a B vitamin supplement to dye your urine
When you drink a lot of water, your urine automatically turns paler and the examiner might guess that you tried to dilute the drug by drinking more water than normal. To avoid getting caught, take a B-vitamin supplement when you start drinking the water. The supplement will give the urine a darker color, thus reducing the chances of being detected.
- For example, if you start drinking at 9 am, take a B vitamins supplement at the same time.
- You can buy a B-vitamin supplement in well-stocked pharmacies, parapharmacies and supermarkets.
Suggestion: you can take a multivitamin if you already have it at home and you don't have time to go out to buy a vitamin B supplement. Among the vitamins contained in multivitamin supplements there are also those that belong to the B complex, so you will get a similar result.
Step 4. Try taking an over-the-counter diuretic to increase urine production
Take it a couple of hours before your scheduled test time. If the amount of urine increases, the concentration of the drug automatically decreases. You can buy an over-the-counter diuretic at all pharmacies and drugstores.
- Do not exceed the recommended dosage. Follow the instructions on the package insert.
- Tea, coffee and cranberry juice have diuretic effects, albeit moderate; so they can help you if you don't have time to leave the house to go to the pharmacy.
Step 5. Add a few drops of Visine to your urine if you have to undergo a test that looks for the presence of marijuana
Visine is an eye drop and according to some it is able to reduce the concentration of THC in the urine, but there is no evidence to prove it. However, if you have the possibility to provide the sample in a private room, you can try adding a few drops of Visine to the urine.
Make sure no one sees you if you intend to use the eye drops. If you were caught faking the urine sample, your attempt would automatically fail and you could end up in big legal trouble
Part 3 of 4: Passing Other Types of Drug Tests
Step 1. Refrain from using drugs for at least 4 hours before the blood or saliva test
These tests have a higher sensitivity than that of urine and are also used for diagnostic purposes. Blood and saliva tests are usually required in specific circumstances, for example in the case of involvement in a car accident or if the employer suspects an employee is using drugs.
Keep in mind that there is very little you can do to skew your results if you have to undergo an unannounced blood test
Step 2. Eat, drink water, and use mouthwash before undergoing a saliva test
The more saliva you can generate before a sample is taken, the better. Have a full meal or snack, drink a couple of glasses of water, and rinse your mouth with mouthwash (or other water if you don't have mouthwash on hand). These are all effective ways to remove THC from saliva and lower its concentration before a sample is taken.
Suggestion: In the absence of anything else, even chewing a simple chewing gum can be useful to reduce THC levels in saliva.
Step 3. Wash your hair with an anti-dandruff or clarifying shampoo if you need to undergo a hair toxicology test
Both can help you reduce the amount of drugs detectable in the follicles. If you have been given the date of the tox screen early enough, buy a bottle of anti-dandruff or clarifying shampoo and wash your hair 2 or 3 times on the day of the test.
Keep in mind that this is not an infallible remedy, the toxicological examination of the hair aims to detect if you have used drugs in the last few months. If so, you will most likely not be able to pass the test unscathed while washing your hair with an anti-dandruff or clarifying shampoo
Part 4 of 4: Increase the Odds of Success
Step 1. Find out if the drug you used is detectable through a drug test
There are two main levels of toxicological tests: one that allows you to detect the presence of 5 drugs (marijuana, cocaine, phencyclidine, opiates and amphetamines), the other more complete that allows you to detect the presence of all the drugs included in the first level plus 5 others (benzodiazepines, oxycodone, methadone, barbiturates and MDMA (or ecstasy). If the drug you are using is not included in the drugs detectable by the prescribed drug test, you may be able to pass it unscathed.
- Note that if your employer suspects you have an alcohol problem, they may ask you to undergo other specific tests.
- There are also tests formulated to detect new drugs synthesized in the laboratory, called "designer drugs" or "research chemicals", but they are not normally required.
Step 2. Tell the examiner if you use any medications
If you are taking any type of medicine, it is important to tell the examiner, especially if it falls into one of the tested categories. You will almost certainly need to provide evidence that the drug is being used, such as a doctor's prescription.
For example, if you are undergoing a first-level toxicology test, which certifies the presence of the five main drugs, and you are undergoing amphetamine therapy to treat ADHD (or ADHD, or "Attention Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder.), it is very important for the examiner to know
Step 3. Avoid poppy seeds and foods that contain them
Poppy seeds can generate a false positive, as they come from the same plant used to make opiates. Do not eat any food that contains poppy seeds during the days or weeks leading up to the drug test. If you have to undergo an unannounced exam and have eaten a food containing poppy seeds, tell the examiner. You may have the option to retake the test if a false positive occurs.
Foods that may contain poppy seeds mainly include sweet and savory baked goods
Step 4. Beware of non-validated or potentially dangerous remedies
There are a lot of myths about how to pass a toxicology test, but only a few remedies really work. Many methods do not offer proven results and some are even dangerous, so they should be avoided. Deceptive remedies you definitely need to stay away from include:
- Take the root of hydraste;
- Add bleach, ammonia, vinegar, or detergent to the urine;
- Use synthetic urine;
- Drink bleach or other cleaners.
Attention: never drink bleach and any other detergent or detergent. It is extremely dangerous and can be fatal.
