Feather earrings are the fashion of the moment. This is a bold accessory that can be made very easily by following this simple tutorial!
Steps
Step 1. Choose good feathers
The feathers to use are a personal choice, but they should be graceful, elegant and in good condition. If you buy them, their cleanliness and good condition should already be guaranteed. Instead, in case you decide to retrieve them directly from your bird or during a walk in the woods, be sure to disinfect them and clean them of residual dirt.
-
Discard any feathers that are stained, pierced or torn.
-
Peacock, ostrich, swan and duck feathers, or feathers with particular colors and patterns, are an excellent choice.
Method 1 of 2: Drop Earrings with Feathers
Step 1. With a needle or piercing tool, make a small hole in each feather
Make the hole at the top of the feather, but not too close to the top edge (otherwise it will tear).
Step 2. Open the rings
Use the pliers for this part: if you have two pairs, you can use one pair to hold the ring in place and the other to open it.
Step 3. Slip the rings into the feathers
Use two rings for each feather, so that there is space between the hook and the feather.
Step 4. Close the outer ring
You should now have two feathers ready to be attached to the earwls.
Step 5. Open the hooked end of the earwires
Slide it inside each ring and close with pliers. The feathers should now hang from the hook.
Step 6. Shake the feathers a little to make sure that the hook and the ring are well joined
And that's it!
Step 7. Creation is complete
Method 2 of 2: Feather Clip Earrings
Step 1. Apply a drop of glue to the front of the clip
If the clip is particularly small and the feather is quite large, cut a small piece of cardboard in the shape of a circle and glue it to the clip first. It will provide a larger and safer surface on which to attach the feather. Let it dry and apply more glue before proceeding to the next step.
Step 2. Attach the feather, or feathers, with glue
Step 3. If you want to use a gemstone, glue it on top of the feather where it rests on the clip
It can be a great way to hide the tip of the feather.
Step 4. Try on the earrings
Check that they are comfortable to wear and you are done.
Advice
- Make sure that the metal parts are all made of the same metal: if the rings are silver, do not buy gold nuns!
- You can make beaded or sequined circles around the gemstone, or you can include beads in your drop earrings composition.
- The second method can also be used for shoe clips. Create a pair of matching earrings and shoe clips for a complete set of stylish accessories.
- Once you've made them, you can mix and match your feather earrings.
