The noose knot is typically used for securing materials, setting traps or capturing animals. It's pretty easy to do, so it's a great option if you need to tie something up fast. Don't put the noose around your neck, even as a joke.

If you want to know how to make a noose because you are considering committing suicide and need immediate support, contact a suicide prevention helpline. In an emergency, call 112.

  • Contact the Friendly Phone at 02 2327 2327 (the service is active from 10 to 24), on WhatsApp at 345 03 61 628 (from 18 to 21) or via free webcall at www.telefonoamico.net.
  • You can also call the Yellow Telephone of the Italian Families Association for the Prevention of Suicide at the toll-free number 800 011 110 (active 24 hours a day).

Steps

Part 1 of 2: Form the Knot

Tie a Noose Step 1
Tie a Noose Step 1

Step 1. Create a loop by superimposing the current over the rest of the string

The "active" part of the rope is called "current", that is the end that is actually used to tie the knot; the remaining part of the rope is the "sleeper". To start, wrap the rope by crossing the current over the sleeper to form a 10-15cm loop.

You can use string, rope, twine, or even a fishing line. The procedure is always the same, regardless of the material used

Step 2. Slide the sleeper over the center of the ring

Grab the point where the current meets the sleeper to keep them together. Next, create a second loop by superimposing the sleeper over the first, so that it crosses it in the center.

  • The dimensions of the first and second rings should be more or less identical.
  • The appearance should be somewhat reminiscent of a pretzel.

Step 3. Slip the sleeper inside the ring

From under the first ring, grab the sleeper who rests on it. Hold the meeting point between current and sleeper with your non-dominant hand, then push the sleeper through the ring.

Part 2 of 2: Tighten the Noose

Step 1. Slide the sleeper to form a twisted pair

Keep pulling the sleeper through the loop to create a twisted pair, which is the loop of the knot. It is what you will put around whatever object you intend to tie with the noose. By pulling the twisted pair, the two rings will become smaller and smaller, until they tighten completely.

The more you pull the twisted pair, the wider it will be once you are done tightening

Step 2. Slide the rings if you want to reduce the twisted pair

The noose knot is tightened by pulling the twisted pair; before tightening all the way, you can adjust the size of the eyelet by gently sliding the rings you have tightened.

Step 3. Finish by pulling the twisted pair away from the current

Grab the twisted pair with one hand and the current protruding from the knot with the other, then pull them in opposite directions to fully tighten the knot. Once the knot is tight, it's done!

You can untie the loop simply by loosening the main knot blocking the twisted pair

Warnings

  • Using a noose to hang effigies (for example puppets that resemble political figures, as used during protests in some countries of the world) can be a crime in some countries and even considered as a threat by the police.
  • In some countries a noose is seen as a lethal weapon and you can be arrested for having one with you.
