Using mascara is ideal for long, thick lashes. If it is dry, lumpy, or the tube is almost empty, try diluting it. It is always worth saving, as long as it has been open for less than six months. Dilute it using a contact lens saline solution or aloe vera gel, or try heating it with hot water to extend its useful life. Once diluted, you can use it for another week.

Steps

Part 1 of 3: Add Liquids to Mascara

Step 1. Add three to four drops of saline to a dry mascara

Use contact lens saline or eye drops. Make sure the drops are not specifically formulated to reduce redness, as it may irritate the eyes. Pour a few drops into the tube, shake it, and then test the mascara on your wrist. Add another drop or two if it continues to dry out.

Do not add more than 10 drops. If you pour too much liquid into your mascara, it won't work properly

Step 2. Use aloe vera to prevent lumps from forming in mascara

Aloe vera can dilute the product and facilitate its application. Pour a drop or two of aloe vera gel into the tube. Twist the brush in the container to mix the gel with the mascara. Swipe the brush on your wrist to see if there are fewer lumps. Add another drop of product if it seems necessary.

As recommended in the case of saline, it is best to avoid pouring too much aloe vera gel into the tube. If your mascara is still thick and lumpy after adding about five drops of gel, you may want to buy a new one

Step 3. Add coconut oil to mascara to moisturize lashes

Coconut oil is just as effective for diluting mascara and can even lengthen your lashes! Heat a spoonful of oil in the microwave for about 15-30 seconds or until it melts. Using the spoon, pour three to four drops of coconut oil (which will now be liquid) into the mascara tube. To mix oil and mascara, you can shake the tube or twist the brush inside.

After using this solution for about two months you should notice longer lashes

Part 2 of 3: Warm up the Mascara

Step 1. Boil some water in a saucepan

Use a medium-sized saucepan and fill it roughly halfway through. Adjust the flame to maximum. It shouldn't take more than five minutes for the water to start boiling.

Step 2. Pour the boiling water into a heat-resistant glass bowl

Pour it carefully and slowly to avoid splashing. Don't worry if it doesn't fit all into the container. You will only need a few inches inside the bowl.

Step 3. Make sure the mascara tube is tightly closed

Take the tube and screw the cap tight. Since you will have to put it in water, it is good to prevent it from leaking.

Step 4. Soak the mascara in the glass bowl for five to 10 minutes

Place the tube in the bowl of boiling water. Leave it inside for a minimum of five minutes and a maximum of 10.

Use your phone or kitchen timer to track your progress

Step 5. Dry the tube and test the mascara

Use tongs or a large spoon to withdraw the mascara from the bowl. Put it on a table and dry it with a tea towel. Avoid touching it with your hands for a few minutes. Once the tube feels cool to the touch, wipe the brush on your wrist to see if it has diluted.

If this method doesn't work the first time, you will need to try using a liquid product to dilute the mascara

Part 3 of 3: Using Mascara Correctly

Step 1. Screw the cap tightly after each use

Make sure the mascara is closed by screwing the cap on a few more times after using it. Just let in a little air to dry it completely.

If you have trouble reopening the mascara, put on a pair of rubber gloves and try again! This way the grip will be better

Step 2. Store it vertically

Use a small glass jar to keep the mascara upright along with the makeup brushes. This will help keep the liquid in the tube fresh longer.

You can even decorate the jar for display in the bathroom or bedroom

Step 3. Avoid repeatedly moving the brush up and down

Many people do this because they think this helps them take out more mascara and then apply more to their lashes. Avoid it! In reality, this will only let air into the tube, making the product dry and lumpy. Instead, twist the brush in a circular motion as you remove it from the tube.

Rotating the brush in a circular motion will allow you to scrub the bristles on the sides of the tube. A good amount of mascara will remain on the brush without letting air into the container

Step 4. Discard the diluted mascara after a week

Mascara contains well-balanced ingredients formulated to prevent the proliferation of bacteria. When you dilute it with water or any other substance, this balance is upset and the chances of bacteria developing are increased. To prevent a potentially serious eye infection, never use diluted mascara for more than a week.

Step 5. Save the brush when it comes time to discard the mascara

Who doesn't like recycling expensive beauty products? Dip the brush in a make-up remover for a few hours to remove all dirt residue. Then, wash it off with warm water and a body soap. Rinse it and dry it: at this point you will have a new accessory to do your make-up. Keep it as a spare brush or use it as an eyebrow brush.

Warnings

  • You should never share mascara with your friends, even if you have to use your bottle brush. Sharing mascara can cause serious infections, with the risk of losing your lashes.
  • Do not store mascara for more than six months. While it's frustrating to have to throw it out before you're done, buying a new tube is better than having an eye infection!
