Short cuts are becoming more and more popular, especially the now very popular "bob". Many women choose from the many versions of this style which vary in length (from the chin to the shoulders). If you've recently changed your haircut, you may need some tips on styling your hair the right way. You can choose from many different techniques, all simple and widespread, based on the type and needs of your hair.
Steps
Method 1 of 5: Make a Curved Fold
Step 1. Moisten your hair or leave it damp after a shower
This method is one of the most common for styling a "bob" and is performed on damp hair. Spray them with a little water if they are dry or leave them moist if you have just shampooed.
Step 2. Massage a styling product, such as a light hold mousse or gel, into the hair
It will make the style last longer once the hair is dry.
Pour an amount equal to a twenty cent coin into the palm of your hand. Rub one palm against the other to distribute it evenly on your hands, then apply it to your hair by sliding it between your fingers
Step 3. Gather the hair from the upper two thirds of the head
You will need to make the fold in layers, so tie the ones you will dry later with a rubber band or clothespin to prevent them from getting in the way of your current work.
Part your hair horizontally just above your ears. Place your thumbs on the sides of your head just above your ears, then slide them back to create a parting line. Gather the top hair and tie it with a rubber band or bobby pin to keep it away from the neck. Comb down those at the nape of the neck
Step 4. Now lay a section of the loose hair over the round brush
Take a 2 '' section and place it on top of the brush.
If you want, you can run the brush through your hair by twisting it slightly as you pull it down to remove any knots
Step 5. Place the nozzle of the hair dryer at the height of the roots, above the brush and direct it towards the tips
The hair dryer must always point downwards otherwise it will produce the unwanted frizz effect.
Step 6. Dry your hair while supporting it with the brush
You have to slowly rotate it and move it towards the ends to gently curve the hair towards the neck. The "bob" is a short cut, so you will have a maximum of ten centimeters of hair to dry. If they only go to the chin, you may not even need to move the brush down, while if they are longer, you will have to slide it all the way to the tips.
- Continue to gently rotate the brush to give the right curve to the hair. Once you reach the tips, you will need to make a quick movement with your wrist to bring the brush back under the roots.
- Completely dry the section before moving on to the next one. If it is not perfectly dry, it will quickly lose its crease.
Step 7. Repeat the same operations to dry the next strand and continue in this way until you have styled all the hair of the lower section of the nape
By creating sections of hair about 5 cm each, you will probably get 3 or 4. Use the blow dryer and the round brush to comb and gently curl them, one at a time, towards the neck.
When done, the hair at the lower nape of the neck should all be softly curved towards the neck and serve as a base for the top layers
Step 8. Make a second parting of the hair with your fingers
This time you will need to collect and tie only the top third. In this way you can style those of the central band of the head, making them uniform with those you have just finished styling.
Place your thumbs at the hairline, in line with the arch of the eyebrows. Slide them back against your scalp until they meet behind your head. Gather and tie those above the parting line with a rubber band or clothespin
Step 9. Divide the hair into sections of 5 cm each and style them with the help of the round brush
As you did before, blow dry and curve the sections of hair towards the neck using the blow dryer and the round brush.
- Remember to start by holding the brush and hairdryer at the roots and direct the jet of hot air towards the tips.
- Keep twisting the brush slightly as you pull it towards the tips. At this point on the head, the hair will be longer than that of the lower part, so you will have to pull the brush down several times and then bring it back under the roots and start over.
Step 10. Completely dry the section you are working on before moving on to the next one
Continue like this until you reach the opposite side of the head. When finished, the hair should all be softly curved towards the nape of the neck and fall back on the ones you dried previously.
When styling your hair on the sides of your head, you need to curl it towards the sides of the neck and jaw rather than towards the nape of the neck
Step 11. Now you can free the last third of hair as well
Untie them and part them in the middle or to the side using the pointed handle of a comb. Let them fall freely to the sides of the face.
Step 12. Repeat the previous steps to dry this last section of hair
First divide them into 5 cm wide strands, then style them one after the other. Gently lift the hair at the root, tuck the brush under it and twist it slightly to get a good grip.
- Orient the nozzle of the hairdryer towards the tips, holding it above the roots, to prevent the hair from ruffling.
- Continue to roll the round brush in your hand, under the lock of hair, so that the ends are gently curved towards the neck. This is the part of the head where the hair is the longest, so you will have to pull the brush down several times and then bring it back under the roots again and start over until each strand is completely dry.
Step 13. Dry all strands of the top of the head well
Go from strand to strand, styling them one at a time with the help of the round brush. As before, at the end all the hair must have a soft curve and fall back on the ones you dried previously.
Step 14. Fix the result with the spray lacquer
If you think that the mousse or gel you applied to your hair before you started drying it is not enough to make the style last, you can also use a little spray hairspray.
Method 2 of 5: Making a Smooth Crease
Step 1. Insert the plug of the soleplate into the socket and turn it on to warm it up
Choose the temperature that best suits your hair type, bearing in mind that it should never exceed 185 °.
Let the straightener preheat as you go through the following steps to prep your hair
Step 2. Check that all hair is totally dry
You should never use the straightener on damp hair because in addition to not making it smooth, it will ruin it. If you find that they are still slightly damp, continue to blow dry them.
Step 3. Apply heat protection or styling product
Many hairdressers recommend massaging a heat protection product into your hair before using a straightener, blow dryer or curling iron. They are usually sold as a spray and should be applied strand by strand to ensure even protection.
If you prefer, you can also use a foam or gel suitable for applying to dry hair. They will help make the smooth fold last longer
Step 4. Gather the top two thirds of the hair and tie it over the head with a rubber band or a hair clip
You will need to iron them one layer at a time, so to start, fix the ones on the middle and top of the head by making a ponytail or a small bun. This way you can freely style those at the nape of the neck.
Part your hair horizontally just above your ears. Place your thumbs on the sides of your head just above your ears, then slide them back to create a parting line. Gather the top hair and tie it with a rubber band or bobby pin to keep it away from the neck. Comb the remaining ones down
Step 5. Separate a few inches section of hair with your fingers
Make sure there is no fluttering hair or knots to allow the straightener to slide precisely over the strand.
Remember that it is better to apply the heat protection product to each individual strand before ironing it rather than spray it all over the head. It will ensure a more even protection of the hair
Step 6. Close the plate around the strand, at the height of the roots, then gently slide it towards the tips
Remember that it is important to make one smooth movement without interruption. Stopping at some point in the lengths will create a crease in the hair that will be difficult to correct.
- Do not tighten the plate too hard as it could break or burn the hair.
- A single stroke should be enough, but if the result doesn't satisfy you fully, you can straighten the strand a second time.
Step 7. Repeat the steps to straighten all the strands that make up the lower hair layer
Remember that each single strand must not exceed 2-3 cm. Continue until the result fully satisfies you. Don't forget to apply the heat protection product each time, as needed.
Step 8. Free the hair from the middle band of the head
This time you have to separate those of the upper band and tie them with an elastic or a clothespin to be able to freely iron those of the central section of the garment.
Place your thumbs at the hairline, in line with the arch of the eyebrows. Slide them back against your scalp until they meet behind your head. Gather and tie those above the parting line with a rubber band or clothespin
Step 9. Straighten the hair divided into 2-3 cm sections
Work exactly as you did before, separating small sections of hair to be straightened with the flat iron.
- Don't forget to apply the heat protection product each time, as needed.
- From time to time, make sure there are no fluttering hair or knots to allow the straightener to slide precisely over the strand.
- Start from one side of the neck and work towards the opposite, checking from time to time that you have not left any strands behind that are not ironed.
Step 10. Free even the last of your hair
Remove the elastic or clothespin you used to tie them over your head. Part the part as usual, in the middle or to the side, using the handle of a comb.
Brush or comb your hair to remove any knots and allow the straightener to slide precisely over the strands
Step 11. Divide the hair on the top of the head into small sections and straighten one after the other
Using the same technique you've used so far, slowly slide the straightener over the individual strands of hair.
Check from time to time that you haven't forgotten a few strands
Step 12. Finish by applying the hairspray
If you want to make sure the styling lasts as long as possible, you can spray your hair with a layer of spray hairspray.
Method 3 of 5: Make a Wavy Crease with the Curling Iron
Step 1. Insert the plug of the curling iron into the socket and turn it on to heat it up
Choose the temperature that best suits your hair type, bearing in mind that using excessive heat could damage it or burn your scalp.
Let the curling iron preheat as you go through the following steps to prepare your hair for styling
Step 2. Check that all hair is totally dry
If they are still damp, pick up the hair dryer to finish the job. Remember that the hair will not hold its styling if you curl it while it is still damp.
According to some hairdressers, curls last longer if your hair is lightly soiled, so you may want to try waiting a day or two after shampooing before curling it
Step 3. Apply a mousse or gel for perfect styling
Choose a product formulated to be used on dry hair and to make curls last longer. Select a line specifically designed for the needs of curly hair.
Step 4. Gather the hair of the upper two thirds of the head using a rubber band or a hair clip
It's easier to curl your hair layer by layer and spot any strands that are left behind.
Part your hair horizontally just above your ears. Place your thumbs on the sides of your head just above your ears, then slide them back to create a parting line. Gather the top hair and tie it with a rubber band or bobby pin to keep it away from the neck. Comb down those at the nape of the neck
Step 5. Separate a few inches section of hair with your fingers
Make sure there is no fluttering hair or knots to be able to create precise and beautiful waves to see.
You can apply the heat protection product strand by strand as you curl your hair. It will protect them from the intense heat emanating from the curling iron to prevent them from getting damaged
Step 6. Wrap a first section of hair around the curling iron
Be careful not to touch it with your fingers as you roll your hair around it to avoid burning yourself.
- In addition to the normal iron, there is also a curling bar. Especially if you have decided to use this second option, wrapping your hair several times will result in smaller and more defined curls, while if you roll them less you will ensure softer waves.
- If you are using a curling iron, close the tongs and hold it steady for 10-15 seconds before unrolling your hair.
- If you are using a curling bar, hold the lock by the tips, keeping your fingers a little apart to avoid burns. Stay in that position for 10-15 seconds before unrolling your hair.
Step 7. Repeat the same operations with each small strand that makes up the hair band at the nape of the neck
Before moving on, check that you have not left any behind and if in some places the result does not satisfy you, repeat the steps a second time.
Step 8. Free the hair from the middle band of the head
At this point you have to separate those of the upper band and tie them with an elastic or a clothespin to be able to easily curl those of the central section of the garment.
Place your thumbs at the hairline, in line with the arch of the eyebrows. Slide them back against your scalp until they meet behind your head. Gather and tie those above the parting line with a rubber band or clothespin. You can make a small ponytail or a bun
Step 9. Curl the hair of the middle section of the head divided into 2-3 cm strands
Work exactly as you did before, separating small sections of hair to be curled with the iron or curling bar.
- Don't forget to apply the heat protection spray as needed.
- Again, make sure there are no fluttering hair or knots before you start wrapping individual strands of hair around the iron or curling bar.
- Start on one side of your face and work your way up to the opposite, checking from time to time that you haven't left any strands behind. Checking this is especially important at this point, as there will be a lot more loose hair hiding underneath.
Step 10. Loosen the last collected hair as well
Remove the elastic or clothespin you used to tie them over your head. Part the part as usual, in the middle or to the side, using the handle of a comb.
Gently run your fingers through your hair to comb it down and eliminate possible knots
Step 11. Again divide the hair on the top of the head into small sections and curl them one after the other
Keep using the same technique starting from one side of the face until you reach the opposite side.
Don't forget to check that you haven't left any strands behind. Try to get a thorough checkup and, if possible, get someone else to help you with the back of your head
Step 12. Finish by applying the hairspray to set the crease
If you want to make sure your curls last as long as possible, you can spray your hair with a layer of spray hairspray.
Method 4 of 5: Curl Your Hair Naturally
Step 1. Wash or wet your hair
Getting a wavy bob naturally is easier by starting with damp hair. This is why it is best to do this style immediately after shampooing or wet your hair before starting.
If you don't plan to wash them, spray some water over them with a spray bottle or put your head under the sink or bathtub tap for a few seconds
Step 2. Select a styling product formulated to make curls last long
There are numerous lines formulated specifically for the needs of wavy or curly hair. Choose the product that best suits the characteristics of your hair. You can choose from multiple formulations, for example for fine, thick, dry or damaged hair.
A foam or a gel is more suitable. You can also select a spray product to apply after the job is finished
Step 3. Bend your torso forward to put yourself upside down
Let your hair fall to the floor. By staying in this position you will be able to get more volume.
You can stay upright if your hair is already voluminous enough by nature
Step 4. Pour a twenty-cent amount of product into the palm of your hand and get ready to apply it to your hair
Rub one palm against the other to distribute it evenly on both hands.
Start with this amount, you can add more if you feel like it is needed
Step 5. Run your hands through your hair and crumple it between your fingers
It is generally best to proceed with small sections at a time; what you need to do is gently lift the hair towards the scalp with the palms, closing the fingers lightly afterwards. This special technique is called "scrunching" and serves to give volume to the roots and improve the shape of the curls.
Make sure you apply the product and technique evenly throughout your hair. Many women forget those closest to the nape of the neck, but inattention is easily seen. Scrunch the hair near your neck as well
Step 6. Return to a standing position and pull your hair back
You can apply more foam or gel, as needed, and scrunch the strands you realize you have left behind. Using a mirror will make it easier to spot them.
Step 7. Let your hair dry
If you have curly or wavy hair by nature, the work you have done so far may be enough. However, there are a couple of additional steps you can take if you wish.
- You can blow dry your hair with the diffuser for more volume and more defined curls.
- You can use hairspray to extend the life of the curls. However, remember that it may harden your hair, so if you prefer your curls to remain soft and natural, it's best to do without it.
Method 5 of 5: "Beach Waves" effect
Step 1. Buy a texturizing product to give your hair more volume
Nowadays there are many products specially formulated to create the "beach waves" effect. Among others, there are sea salt sprays, which are very popular.
If you don't have a suitable product at home, the first thing to do is go out and buy one at a perfumery or supermarket
Step 2. To begin, you must have either let your hair air dry or still have it slightly damp
Both techniques have a large number of supporters and it is still unclear which is the best. Read the directions on the texturizing product to find out if in your case it is better that the hair is completely dry or still slightly damp. You can experiment to figure out which method is best for your hair.
Even if you already have preferences regarding the technique to use, it will certainly be useful to read the instructions on the product to be able to use it at its best
Step 3. Apply the texturizing spray to the hair
Make sure you distribute it all over the place. You can turn upside down to more comfortably reach the hair at the nape of the neck.
Step 4. Use the "scrunching" technique
Many women claim that the "scrunching" method also works well for soft beach waves.
- Lift small strands of hair with your palms, then close them for a few moments between your fingers without squeezing too much. Proceed slowly and gently.
- The method works best and guarantees more volume when done upside down.
Step 5. Create the "beach waves" effect with the curling bar
If you find that the "scrunching" technique does not work in your case, you can create some beach waves with the curling iron after applying the texturizing spray.
- Shape into a 5 cm section and wrap it around the bar, no more than 2-3 times, to get soft waves instead of small defined curls. Start on one side of your face and gradually work your way up to the opposite side. Remember that each strand must be approximately 5 cm wide. At the end check that you have done a good job and intervene again where necessary.
- Be careful not to touch the curling bar while holding the tips to avoid burning yourself.
Step 6. Top off with some more texturizing spray
After using the "scrunching" technique or the curling bar, gently slide your fingers through the strands for softer, more natural waves. Finally, apply more spray to make them more defined and make them last longer.
